If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Why the fuck am I so goddamn bad at this? I'm never going to get to actually drawing at this rate. This is after about a month and a half of lines, squares and ellipses, as well as some very basic 1VP perspective. And I'm still struggling a lot with rotating squares and accurately fitting ellipses into them.
Speaking of getting to actually drawing, how would I go about ditching the fear of drawing "incorrectly" and just doing it even if I don't have the knowledge or the mechanical skill to actually draw what I want? I can't "relax and draw what inspired me for fun" like this, but if I just strictly grind exercises with this level of progress I'll probably not make it. I remember drawing shit without a care in the world when I was a wee lad, but as soon as I started "getting serious" and learning how to do shit properly, there's been all kinds of worries and insecurities cropping up.

There is no proper way, make things in a style that pleases you and makes you smile. Over time you'll gradually improve as you seek to elaborate on and develop that which makes you smile. When you were young you didn't care about anything other than making yourself smile, so work to achieve that again. Draw an octopus.

I'm having a lot of trouble with faces. A lot of the time, they look really strange and I have trouble identifying the problem. These are my most recent faces. I've watched a lot of videos on faces and the structure of the head and tried to apply what I learn but they still keep looking awkward and it's driving me mad. I'm not going for any style in particular, I'm mainly just trying to draw competent looking faces and capture the expressiveness/energy of the reference. If anyone can point out where I'm messing up and what I could be doing differently, I'd really appreciate it.

his design gave me a little of that but here’s some random things i would consider adding to his design that i think could help a little of you wanted to add them

>messy clothes may help him seem more mischievous
>maybe wearing some sort of invention he made on his body, or something generally technological
>something related to the ocean excluding his color palette and hair, sorta less like he’s representing the ocean and more that he exists with it
>the pattern of his outfit feels a little tacked on there but that may just have to do with the drawing and not the pattern
>if you want him to seem more smart or curious then you could add glasses for the nerdy effect, or maybe goggles might add more to the ocean/invented look depending on which way you’d go about them

idk those are just my ideas, you can still have a good design without incorporating any of those features

what do you mean by "strange" and "awkward"?

>I'm mainly just trying to draw competent looking faces and capture the expressiveness/energy of the reference
your faces *do* look competent and very expressive - at least in my opinion

the only guess i could make as to your dissatisfaction is - perhaps your expectation is "appealing faces in a finished illustration" and what you have is "appealing faces in rough sketch format" ...

your proportions are fine, the faces are expressive, they are appealing, even from different refs they have a hint of some personal touch / style of yours

or maybe you struggle to create faces like these from imagination and that is your true problem?

what would be an example of non-"awkward" and non-"strange" faces?

i agree that pic you posted is very nice, however i think there are multiple faces among yours that look equally as good. sure, yours are from reference while this example might be from imagination - but in my eyes you are very close to the point of still confusing me about your seemingly strong dissatisfaction with your own faces.

>the impression that they knew what they were doing and didn't just fumble their way into the result like I usually do.
sure, but then again, that person might have been using references themselves, and that specific face might have been the 3rd retry from scratch to get the exact effect right

i think whatever path you are on will lead you to where you are going rather sooner than later (again, i would argue you are already more than comparable to that example pic)
and frankly i am jealous of your faces and wish you could give me some insight on what exactly you studied and how exactly your practice routine looks like lol

ellipse is the hardest shape ever i have encountered in my 1 year long BEG career. You are kinda wasting time doing "just" ellipses. Pick up some course and go draw something else as well (feel free to keep practicing ellipses if thats your fetish, but dont do JUST ellipses)

top right, the blue figure. you can see the 10 seconds gesture in middle, then 1 minute one on right and then 5min (i think?) on left. That is how you can use gesture as a sketch to build your figures.

Tried a /co/ draw thread request to practice digital earlier in Clip Studio.
Aside from the skill issues, anyone got tips for improving workflow for simple drawings like this?

I only really used the Design pencil for the hidden sketch, and a slightly adjusted Milli pen (and Hard Eraser) with different sizes for everything visible here.
Milli pen seemed close enough to a Hard Round Brush without changing much, was that a dumb choice?
I don't want to go deep searching custom brushes until I have more mileage, but don't want to handicap myself too much or learn bad habits.

Fill tool with lasso on a lower layer is probably ideal for the flat colors to speed that up?
I just did it more manually since I need to get used to the tablet/software anyway, but overall took me longer than it should have.
I know some speed will come with more practice too.

Look, I ain't telling you to embrace the same face, because you probably will overcome this, as you are going out of your comfort zone and all that. But if you really like a look, then you shouldn't change it, just look at Dragon Ball, it has a limited number of eyes and still has good art. Anyways, good luck in your journey mate, heads are probably the thing that takes the longest to be satisfied with.

this applies to literally everything in life, only way to make a thing a second nature is by repetition and grinding. Thats how you learn to play any instrument, thats how you learn to dance, thats how you learn a new language, thats how you learn everything.

>How did you go about it?
Im a beg too, im just slightly better than you at drawing heads

Again, up to you.
What are you drawing for? Fun? Just to learn a new skill? To make drawing your career?
If its not career related, literally do whatever you want, its not like youre in a hurry to improve.
If youre career focused, then I'd do conscious effort drills, and then switch to drawing whatever for fun and end the session in a more relaxed note.

To draw a good face you need to know what a good face looks like. Often times when I draw a face I gaslight myself into believing it looks good when it really doesn't, or I'm simply too blind to see that it's not great. To counter this, I do studies of 1 bajillion faces in a row. Studies have by far been the most helpful to me. Just make sure to apply the knowledge rather than just copying and forgetting. But above all the most important part to getting good at anything in drawing is to persevere and believe.

>What do you want...

That's the weird bit. My 2 year old daughter has just started doodling (draws crude faces and stick figures) and loves watching me draw something more complex for her, and so I'd like to give her a comic book for her 3rd birthday with her as a main character - I could do this simply by using 3D dummies for reference, but I thought that learning to draw from imagination (generally) could not only make the process less tedious, but that it might also unlock a part of my brain that deals with space, perspective, lighting etc. Hence the question "Is it worth it?"

Once in a life time a collaborative work that's really cool happens; this is that collaborative work !

If you are interested in getting your oc drawn, and drawing other people's oc you should join the /ic/ oc survivor tourney! Your oc will be placed on a tropical volcanoe island and will be forced to go through trials and tribulations in this survivor like tourney! You will be drawing a comic about said trials and challenges your oc goes to, plus your oc will be provided housing! Eliminations will be voted upon by contestants, or by a set of judges. Failure to post comic means automatic elimination.

notice how her brow ridge is too shallow in your drawing
look at the two triangles of shadow that her brow ridge casts onto her upper eyelids
also you drew the brows too low and close to the eyes
channel the monkey artist in you from the previous pic and give the faces you draw a humongous neanderthal brow ride. chances are, aiming too high with your intention - but coming short with your beginner art skill - you might hit it perfectly

You don't say. The issue is that squiggly wiggly octopus arms are a little too hard for me to turn into 3d objects right now, since I'm just a no-draw pre-beg. Especially when they curve and twist and coil so much.

>to demonstrate in a book / tutorial how measuring is done
>to redline somebodys drawing
>to check your own art if it looks off and you cant explain why, as a last resort, the nuclear option
>when studying pictures / anatomy / style and exaggeration to get a clear, unambiguous goal for your own attempts

you dont actually measure like that (let alone draw them into your construction) when producing pictures. the closest you get is that over time you develop some favorite way of constructing your subject during the sketch phase and some construction lines will most likely fall onto distances that are very clear and neat and easy to eyeball

that being said, a total beginner might be hitting his head against the wall for a prolonged amount of time and be well advised to make measurements like those extensively

As a pre beg when you do gesture, just do 1 minute ones and draw a sphere for the head, an oval for the torso, an oval for the pelvis, and lines for the limbs with circles where the joints are. I did this for maybe 1000 poses and started to make it more detailed. You develop an eye for it. the more you draw the less you need to actively think about proportions. Your eye skill and your hand/eye coordination skill levels up so you need to think less and less about these things. So yeah, advice is: just draw

im not good enough on detailed anatomy and realistic muscles to judge it well, all i could critique would be the presentation
lines are not clean, make them either more precise or more sketchy
background feels too rough / unfinished and distracts from the figure
partially because figure contains concrete linework, but the background has either no lines at all (sky) or feels like a different style of using lines for shading (ground)
using soft shading on the figure and simultaneously using lines on the surface to indicate muscles / form (which is the abstraction of a simplified frontal soft light) does not harmonize well. i myself am not confident in that regard, i would suggest either making the shading a bit more clear, strong, simple so it "feels closer" to the line work - or using softer hatching on those muscle lines instead of solid lines
and varied lineweight would fit into that equation somehow but that again is still largely hit-or-miss for me.
your lines do vary in strength, but it seems to be less conscious and more incidental. maybe you need to work on that, or maybe you already know how to do it and need merely to make it more obvious and vary the line strength more extremely
also the face is much simpler than the body which creates a feeling of disconnectedness. consider adding simple shading or hatching on the face too.
all of those issues have some subjective quality to them. it is up to you how to resolve them, there is no clear right answer.

also thank you for your kind post! dont be mistaken though, that is the best example on a good day of copying a ref that inspired me. i chose it specifically because it avoids my weaknesses in order to focus on and experiment with my workflow and rendering. for every pic like that i have 3 that i have abandoned and ruined whatever soul there was lol. and dont get me started on pictures from imagination

I did a lot of painting copies from both photos and life.Doing that will force you internalize lighting, color, value, temperature and edgework automatically. More so if you do it from life because you have to interpret and process more information. Photos are moreso for shape and composition, as the image is selected for you by a person. Ideally your own photos or well shot films are best. I suck ass at drawing though, you can only paint as well you can draw, still working on that....

chinese knock offs are one or two technology iterations behind wacom, but they are the same apart from that. literally the same, just rebranded.
i had a xp pen deco 03 until its battery shit the bed and i had to keep it wired permanently, then constant cable bending killed it.
after that i bought a deco 01 (same tablet but without the wireless bullshit) and taped the cable in a stable position to the tablets side.
deco 03 lasted exactly 2 years. deco 01 is chugging over 3 years now.
when this one breaks im buying another xp pen.

Yeah, I just don't think that workflow is your biggest issue right now.
I frankly don't even understand what issue you're having. Did it take you inordinately long to draw that? Did you get into a situation where fixing the drawing would be incredibly difficult because of some decision with layers you made earlier? What's the problem you're trying to fix? Because like I said, new brushes aren't going to help with the anatomy.

as you said it yourself, i am no master in rendering myself. it is easier to point out mistakes than correcting them. but your air brush just doesnt work. that is for sure. her leg, belly, armpit, ass... it all looks uncanny valley.

use reference and use some real brush and paint the form using lighter and darker colors where you actually show the form. not like this where you imply torso is just 1 big cylinder. because it isnt.

pic related. check how drastic is the difference in values between left and right side of her body. it goes from white-pink to essentially black and how knees, elbows and such have hard edges due to lighting. your pic has NONE of that. Also her hair. You painted it like its a solid helm. Hair has texture which is anything but uniform.

tldr ditch air brush, its clearly kneecapping you.
