Based Steve Houston edition

If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

READ THE STICKY:
Completed: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit
New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

No it's not. The web is full of "advice". Totally saturated with tutorials, art channels, art websites and art influencers. But the number one element needed and most powerful too, it is always motivation. To grab a pencil and just draw you don't need a fucking degree, you need motivation. Posting here to get feedback from a group of people at your same level can help you to keep yourself accountable. Just Keep drawing no matter what. It is hard to draw in a vacuum with no fun and no feedback of any kind. Even crap shitposting trolling feedback can help to kick your ass and force you to draw more.

I really love your style and have more good things to say than bad, but if I were to give some criticisms, I feel like the right eye (from my pov) is looking towards me while the left eye is looking towards the left of the image.
Also, I can't put my finger on it, but there's something about the leg with the strap on it that doesn't seem right to me. I think maybe there's just a slight over-emphasis on the inner thigh area above the strap.
Really love what you've got going here.

I did a practice drawing to test a few principles i've been observing, one was to use line-weight to signal depth between two overlapping objects (which you can't really see because I ended up covering it all with the pure black shirt lol), the other was to focus a lot of detail in a single place which I tried on the hair, I wanted to do some kind of a print on the shirt but i've arleady spent too much time on this garbage

Color is, for the most part independent of the medium. There are some peculiarities when you deal with transparent vs. opaque mediums, but if you've studied well, it'll be effortless to understand how to compose with that.

Pick any book on color theory and study it well.

The speed at which you improve doesn't matter, like any skill, some will improve quicker than others. I should've read your whole reply chain before replying, but anyways.
One, the same person did not draw all of those. The linework is completely different, the shapes and way they approached certain things are so different in each one that it makes me think they either stole it, or if they actually did draw it, were tracing/copying someone else's work. October to November is an especially obvious case of that. Furthermore, you are not rendering dresses and doing clothes study that well in September then completely forgetting it for hastily drawn clothes that don't quite match perspective in October.

Second, it doesn't matter if you've been drawing 10 hours a day, because you still aren't analyzing the lines and the shapes involved. In your picture >>6723150 I'm assuming your work is the right one? You lack confidence in your linework and instead of making long, bold strokes, you're doing a lot of short rough strokes to scratch out the shape of your drawing. The number one reason left looks better is because of how clean their lineart is, but you didn't even attempt to copy that, just the rough figure of the sketch. Find art you want to draw like, and examine it. Try to copy it side by side, slowly, figure out how that artist will go about each general line, shape, or shade they're drawing, and understand their thought process behind it. Then, close the book you're copying from, and try to draw it again from memory.

>Fun with a Pencil
Should i really start with this one? Or is there a better book to start with?
Actually, is there a person ITT that learns more from just copying other works that one likes than reading books and practicing those less-fun drawings?
I tried drawabox and Fun with a pencil back in the day but surprisingly didn't have alot of fun with it and dropped drawing. (Pic related was probably the last FWaP drawing i copied)
Trying to get into drawing again after half a year, but I'm just unsure what to start with. From what i've gathered from stickies it should be observation, figure drawing and construction, right? What were the books/videos/resources you started with for these things?
Sorry if i sound like a bitch moaning like that, i just don't want to drop it again

Gesture is stupid. Focus on proportions, construction, perspective, anatomy, and accuracy. After you get the basics, go back and add gesture, posing, acting, etc.

Okay this is a better thought process, but is this actually happening when you're practicing or not? Teaching yourself something requires a lot of introspection. For some starting with gestures works fine for others they're stuck in permabeg stage forever it's all about your thought process of how and why you're doing something, there is no secret sauce but by just being self aware you're ahead of 90% of the field.

keep doing studies of things you suck at. supplement it with courses or books about the subjects
>>6724551
all i can tell you is to pick your art god and follow his course / book to the bitter end. Villpu is considered one of the best art teachers of this generation. Hampton also has a lot of fans. Whatever you pick, do not switch the courses in the middle. It just creates confusion and anxiety when you see contradicting information. Simply trust in the process and do whatever they want you to do. The only book i did (which was heavy on gestures: natural way to draw) said gestures are understood not via thinking, but doing. You are supposed to do hundreds, thousands of them before you will "unlock the inner art eye". Also a lot of people will outright tell you they are meme and you can do without them.

There is also possibility you are beg beg and simply picked too advanced shit for you (these art gods are for advanced begs or ints). I cannot really tell if you leveled up observation, perspective and feeling the form enough to tackle figure drawing unless you PYW. Good luck!

Best way to study construction is to do figure drawing and master copies. Alternate between both. Get Bridgman's anatomy books and Morpho's anatomy books, and spend an hour copying from them. Then spend the 2nd hour drawing from photos of nude models. If you go back and forth between them, you can start to learn to apply simple constructions to what you see in life, and ultimately, from imagination.

That said, you'll never master construction, you'll just keep climbing this infinite staircase for the rest of your life. Pic related is a demonstration I did for you, with a couple of figures from imagination on the side

I'm in the same boat, and none of that matters, just keep drawing.
It's unrealistic to expect to be "good" after a few days, months, or even years of training when there are artists who draw for 30 years+ but are still not happy with their work and aim to be better.

You may learn from others, but comparing yourself to others is retarded, compare yourself today with yourself from yesterday, and try to always improve even if at a snail's pace.
Instead of complaining about not having skills, work towards developing those skills.

I don't know what your goals are, but I firmly believe mine can be achieved even without any talent or artistic background, you just have to put effort into it, and if you suck at it, put 100x more effort until you don't suck as much, and just keep drawing. Less time complaining and more time training so you have less to complain - and finding new points to complain as you overcome the older ones, that's my approach and what I say to you and mostly - myself - since I see myself in your shoes a lot.

I am LITERALLY unable to pick up a pen and draw until the book/video/course I read explicitly states "DO EXERCISE NOW". I just don't understand whether I was given enough information or not. Does the author take time to explain everything in 50 pages and then say "start the assignment" or does he imply I just need to kinda draw whenever? I don't understand.

I'm planning on spending my whole day practicing breaking down references into loomis heads, then turning that into a sketch, how am I doing so far?

>> No.6725407

>>6725403
loomis isn't anatomically correct, so starting with loomis is already starting off on the wrong foot. go hogarth, villppu, or huston

not bad, keep on it
I would practice on the example heads he draws too though, so you can get an idea of how he chooses which lines to keep and erase /line values

I read and watched the gesture related parts of Vilppu's manual, so far I only tried drawing the step examples but I will start to draw out the actual examples and doing timed gesture drawings.
I feel like I did ok with is the gesture that's sitting down, but I feel like leaned too much into copying rather than analysing the example gestures.

all of their own teachings say this, they themselves (hogarth, vilppu, huston) claim loomis is not anatomically correct.

It's called guideline, have you ever looked at a face retard? Each one is different there is no such thing as an 100% anatomically correct guide.

i'm just telling you what they teach, and they are correct. The fact and truth is that the skull is not a ball.

The heads are fine, Loomis is also clear in his books that his standard of proportion is half a head higher than the academic standard. He also gave examples of other standards of proportions as well and how it scales by age.
