It's just plain regulation over a product that we now fully understand to be extremely harmful and is directly linked to many mental illnesses that plague our modern times

Facebook wasn't really there: people had individual blogs instead; each blog would come with curated lists of recommendations (other blogs to look for). Even before, it was nerd-only palace, skillful people exchanging on random topics.

There's still lots of good content out there, but it has become harder to reach. It wasn't ads-centered/signaling/attention seeking, but genuine content offered by generous people.

And some of this old content is still up, or at least archived somehow, and sometimes even running.
