**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Start with a flexible schedule! I found that a really strict one really made it hard to stick to because I got swamped by it. I did mine like this:
Mornings: do 30 minutes to 2 hours of fundies
Noon: lunch break
Afternoon: do another 30 minutes to 2 hours of different fundies
Evening: dinner, then rest of the time you draw a project or for fun
Before bed: cooldown drawings, read a reference book

In between those you can fit your other daily life stuff or if the drawing times need to be postponed. As long as you do the minimum, after a week it'll stick. I've been doing this for a month now and its been helpful waking up and sleeping in the same hours everyday. Weekends you can be more generous about breaks or you could go more hardcore and study a specific thing as much as you can. Lastly, try to cycle your fundies if possible unless you want to grind something specific for a few days. But shake it up once in a while to not get burnt out.

I don't doubt they have their benefits but I think it's way past time to move on

I heard that's where the real bread lies

a clearer understanding of the forms of the leg will inform your lighting choices. the abstracted light shapes in the original hides the depth of the artist's form knowledge.
the muddiness comes from the light carving out strange forms. you have values at both ends of the scale which is about as 'glossy' as you can get lighting-wise, pushing it further would entail reflecting objects on the leg.

Thanks, although I think the original is more accurate to the source. I went to the anime to have a look at Megumin's colors and she does have a bit of a yellowish tinge to her skin. I'm finding it difficult to color skin properly and just assumed she had basic pink skin which I defaulted to. Color just fucks with my mind. If I turn my copy's skin closer to the source does she also look sick? Her skin color is surprisingly difficult to nail without directly eyedropping.

Most of the industry veterans are your age or older at the start of theie careers. I just hit 30 myself earlier this year and I feel like i've just begun a breakthrough. If anything i've started caring less about what others think and want to get good for myself. Of course you have to look at it somewhat realistically if you want to make a career out of it, but if it's a hobby then there's even less pressure for you, just take your time learning.

It's true that doing it with less strokes is good but lineweight might help you more than anything. Here's a comprehensive video talking about how to make your lineart better from your pen settings to how you should approach it:
https://youtu.be/7pi-mR3j2HY
There's also a lot more nuanced things like overlap and showing details of the clothes and body through the linework but you can start by just getting confident in doing varied and interesting strokes. The rest is style and muscle memory.

Feet are a bit difficult but don't shy away from drawing them even if it looks bad at first. Having them be missing or cut off is much worse for the overall image than just trying. I'd start with making them bigger in proportion to her legs. They can still be small and dainty without them looking like they can't support her weight when she's standing. Just keep studying legs and you'll get there! Let me post a page from a book to show you how to picture it in perspective.

Between 30 mins to 2 hours of studying a fundamental when I wake up. After lunch and/or however long it takes to do other obligations, I dedicate the rest of the day to drawing from imagination and applying what I learned. I rotate every other day on fundies i'm weak at like rendering and backgrounds (haven't started those yet, focusing on figures currently) so I don't get too bored and lose focus. It's slow-ish but maintaining it consistently has helped me a lot.
If you get bored with studying easily like me it helps to set a hard limit and take a break. Go for longer if you're able to but I find by the 4-6 hour mark returns are diminished and stuff falls out of my head. Better to have some of it retained throughout the day to put into practice in actual pieces later. Figure out what your internal limit is and make a routine out of it.

I have a good degree of motivation when it comes to master studies since I'm rather good at observation, but specific studies like constructive anatomy, etc, can get pretty dry and I generally don't last a few days. I've had the most consistent success with these when teaming up with someone, since the competitive/sharing aspect tends to fire me up, but I haven't had access to that in a long time now sadly.

What are your preferred sources of learning?
みにまるコミック is probably my favorite because I like analytic teachers and when it comes to anime stylization there aren't that many of them out there.

I'm the Rinotuna guy so he's my main source for figures and for rendering. Other figure drawing books and things about poses I refer to occasionally like the Weichun Xiao Anatomy for Artists, Taco Point Character Drawing and Theorem of Poses. The rest of my sources are just illustrations and artbooks of artists I admire. I have folders labeled for inspo and for study like "art to study for lighting" or "art to study for composition" etc.

From taking some private mentorships. The thing is I'd say I got to where I am by continually getting feedback on concepts and reviewing what was useful and what wasn't. That one idiot that thinks I trace everything because I did hard ref of an artist's comp a couple years ago is one example of how people on here aren't very skilled yet they can't actually elaborate or show you how to fix your problems despite them thinking they know everything. They dont want to help you, they just want to be a dickhead
Character designing is just a series of problems and specifics you have to solve, but requires a lot of deliberate thinking and choices.

Compositions like this are based on individual character personalities + interacting with the scene they're in. For example: they're shopping at a market in town, which character would most likely be running around excitedly? Would it be fun for two or three of them pair up and look at a particular stall together? Would an argument start between two of them because of their personalities clashing or they just tend to pick fights a lot? Those decisions affect things like poses and expressions, even how you want to angle the camera and what objects are around for them to play around in. It's creative problem solving + composing a nice shot of them together at the same time.
I suggest looking at promotional art of games and anime with a large cast of characters, not unlike what you've posted. There's no hard rules other than fundamentals like composition, you just need to start with a good idea for the setting first and the ball will roll from there.

The trick is to not think of each charachter as their own subject at first. First you want to to figure out what compositional shape the group makes. And then add in individual gestures for each charachter so that they flow together with the shape. And then build out the charachters as normal.

It can really help to do some quick gesture drawings with multiple figures for practice and get a feel for how to flow them together.
