If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
Completed: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit
New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
Dont read the stickies they are outdated, dont buy all proko courses, buy vilppu the god of teaching art courses!

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

This is gonna sound weird, but draw with 'blind eyes'.
Your brain is saying shit and getting your drawing messed up, it's a bit like a how a kid draws ovals for eyes.
If it helps pretend you're an alien and you've never seen a human, ovals and eyes before.
Draw what you see, an eye wouldn't be an oval, you've never seen an eye before, youve never seen an oval before, it's a weird shape you're trying to draw.

Use Loomis and proper promotions but also draw what you see.

The OP describes this better and this technique is from a book called drawing on the left side on brain or something.

My bad the book is called called "keys to drawing"

Check the sticky.
Try drawing this upside down, to start off.
Or just try to do a bit. You'll kinda understand when drawing upside is so foreign to you that you just copy lines and draws what's actually there. Since your brain doesnt really have a refference otherwise.

I'll walk it down from top to bottom to try and give critique
>head
the hair looks strange and flat, the strands on the left side of the image wouldn't run down her cheek and then cleanly transition to the shoulder area, it'd curve or have hair fall forward of her shoulder, her eyebrows are different sizes, she has a lazy eye(may be intentional), her nose curves off at the wrong angle(should curve into the brow a bit more, right now it's too far angled left), her lips are oddly shaped, her ear looks very small, and her neck isn't angled properly on the torso, it looks like it's centered a bit to the right of the torso's centerline
>torso
the angle of the shoulders doesn't match up with the curvature of the torso, her left arm is very skinny below the elbow(could be intentional I've seen women like this IRL), the left side of her torso should be curved instead of a straight vertical line, and like the other anon said, her clothes look drawn on top of her. The bottom of her bikini for example is sitting at an odd angle on the body and doesn't cover anything properly unless the intent is that it's been moved to one side to show her snatch. It doesn't "face" the same way that her pelvis and torso are facing, which is why it looks strange. The right side of her torso looks too thick compared to the skinny left side, which makes her appear sort of lopsided.

You've got a decent grasp on color and shading, but your lines need work, and you should try to define them more.

Don't give up! Even if it takes a while, finish your work until you've reached a level you consider decent, then look at it and reflect on what you could've done better. Outside opinions help, I generally bombard my friends and my wife asking for opinions on pieces I've done, because sometimes you get so caught up in small details, nothing looks right(or wrong) when you've been staring at your canvas for hours

>>6714827
Since you posted your reference I can point out a few more things I was talking about. On the left side of her torso, see how her hip curves into the bikini, which then curves into her ribcage, with a final curve into her bra?
On larger women like that, the clothes are generally constricting, and fat provides little resistance. Generally anywhere the clothes meet skin, the skin will curve into it as it's being restricted. Same thing for the strings of the bra on her shoulders. That's what I meant when I said that her clothes look drawn on top, instead of her wearing them.
I'm not sure what you're working in, but generally I do a sketch layer on top of my lineart layer, and then a color layer beneath that, all of which is sitting on my background layer. You can change the opacity of your sketch layer to see your lines underneath it while not covering up the sketch as you do line art, and use the color layer underneath to fill in the lines without masking them. Digital art requires a bit more work than traditional pen and ink because it lacks finesse, but in the end you can do a lot more with it.

We want to establish a Chiaroscuro Relationship between her hair and face the same way you did between her head, neck, and torso. If it was intentional or not, the chiaroscuro shadow allows the viewers eyes to be drawn into the center of the chest without taking attention away from the face. We want this same harmony between the hair and face so the viewers eyes are drawn towards the chest. When I step back and take a look, the hair sticks out to me as being a bit flat and higher in contrast. Step back and notice how the hair battles for the attention of the cloth, body and face. We want our eyes to be drawn into the center of the portrait, so lower the contrast to the same realism as her clothes, accessories, and body.. I think. Great work!

I've just finished part 3 of Keys to Drawing (on proportion) and I'd like to learn construction to begin drawing humans. I wanted first to go Bridgman mode but I think it's a little bit too much for now, or maybe I'm wrong.

I was thinking to restart Fun with a Pencil. It was the first book I used but I couldn't do a thing because it was full of symbol drawing and not understanding depth. I've work a little on cylinder , boxes and sphere since few weeks or drawing object in depth (drawing trough). I'm also doing the beans exercice (very useful for beginner I think).

I plan on continuing KtD now and then, but for now, I want to draw human and construction.

practice proportions. the right forearm is way too small and out of perspective. the face isnt that good. you should study the loomis method, and study facial features seperatley on different pages. grind each on and combine them on a face and you'll see what im talking about.

The drawing from memory’s proportions could use some help. Her head is incredibly large and her lower half very short. If this is your stylistic preference though, I guess it’s alright. Her face is very wide, both eyes are a good distance from the nose despite the tilt of the head. I’d either make them larger or move them in, but again, it’s really up to you. You could try to create some depth with the eyes, too. The head doesn’t connect to the shoulder correctly either. The problem starts around the ear, really the neck should be seen meeting the head nearer the ear than the jaw, but maybe that’s her hair covering it? Idk. The neck should kind of swoop into the shoulder, in your drawing it kinda just goes straight down and then takes a hard turn. If you get the neck-to shoulders region down the arms will come a lot easier to you as well.

Otherwise good beginnings anon, maybe try to draw with a lighter hand and a thinner pencil though.

hello beg. draw thousand of ellipses.

>>6714933
that is truly creative solution but it doesnt solve the inherent issue: how to pop out ellipses in least amount of clicks. there are also THREE different ellipse assistants in krita, one of them draws ellipse between 4 points (of square in perspective), but its like 20 mouse click + switching tool + enabling magnet. meanwhile if vanilla ellipse tool was a little less retarded thats 2 clicks per piece

Hello, /ic/. I've been drawing since for a while, but I started to draw a little more seriously in March and I have for the first time (more or less) finished a drawing of mine. I've noticed a lot of things that are horribly drawn, such as the hands bigger than one another, the head being too big, fucking up the collar, eyes not parallel, hair highlight being out of place. Painted some robot. It evolved from a doodle, I really should perhaps do some thumbnail sketches before committing, rather than going with a meh doodle that I immediately start painting. Would love some feedback. think the background was a bit phoned in. Overall I think allowing myself to plan a bit more, slowing down and not immediately pouncing on a sketch that might not be the greatest to then develop into a painting will be important for me to get better. Well that and practice of course. What do you guys think? Would love some feedback.

I'm not sure where else to ask this, in CSP is there a way to make the lasso fill tool refer to the lineart ref layer? The closest I've gotten is by clipping layers but depending on the shape it won't work.

I attached a picture of what I'm talking about, I want to get the result on the right using the red stroke on the left. I can get the result I want by drawing the line then using the paint bucket (refering to the ref layer) but that's 2 buttons instead of 1.

>The worst is how your hand smears graphite over the paper
Use a scrap sheet of paper.

>How quickly your pencil dulls
Use the side of a wood pencil tip, a mechanical pencil, or invest in a lead holder.

>and how impossible and imprecise the eraser is for creating white highlights. Not to mention when you take photo it suddenly looks different.
OK that I can't help with that.

>But hey at least they cannot accuse you of tracing
There's light boxes and *tracing paper*. Retards will sling accusations regardless.

If you want to be a coomer, lasso+airbrush+blender

Also shade with a color other than black. When you color pick, a good idea is to go more saturated as you get darker

Is it better for beginners to do a lot of sketches or should I focus on finishing my drawings?

>> No.6717390

>>6717361
Finishing your drawings is a skill in itself, so I would recommend a mix of each to develop both your sketching skills and polishing skills. Don't end up like some Anons here who have been drawing for years but have only unfinished sketches to show for it.
You could do ~10 sketches and try finishing the 1 or 2 of the better ones. Sketches allow you to 'fail faster' so you don't end up 'polishing a turd'. By only finishing the better sketches we can avoid wasting time on drawings that were doomed to fail. As a beginner, naturally your sketches won't be very good and fundamental mistakes will be made early on in the drawing, so a 'quantity of quality' mindset will help you to improve faster. As you improve you'll notice these mistakes earlier on and also develop the skills needed to fix them. You will also need fewer sketches to get a good base to work off, so then you can spend more time finishing stuff.

Probably too late to get advice but I am trying to redraw my character in a position where she is riding a scythe, and I’m struggling with foot and arms and making it not look awkward, not sure if the hand p,a cement would look cooler further up on the shaft?

thanks man but turns out the stupid phone camera was making the head appear bigger. I was wondering why the drawing looked fine on paper but as soon as i took the photo the head grew 10x times

brother your anatomy is all over the place, I'm not even sure where to begin. huge, distended neck, legs of differing length, the thighs of the one on the right look like there's an extra joint in the center with how they're bent
Your lines are very clean though
