**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

When I copy the poses, I have trouble with proportions and space between the torso and pelvis with some of them.

What would be the best way to get this right? I copy these poses live when he draws them at 0.5 speed, so I don't have a lot of time, I also don't want to pause a lot, or I end up with having draw only 4 or 5 poses in 40-50 minutes.

Doing this still helped me learn a lot though. He has a playlist where you need to do it every day for like 60 days.

Always measure. Use a line to help guide you if possible. You can make the legs long stylistically but typically the ratio from the head to the hip section is what makes a body feel mostly believable. It's ok if you're having trouble right now and it ends up long when you do the gesture in real time, you can always adjust it afterwards. Just be mindful of it.

I think you'd greatly benefit from "cutting" the overall shape with straight lines just like a sculptor would with a giant piece of clay/marble.

I've drawn a quick overlay on your reference (red) and your copy (blue) and honestly, the "general" proportions are not that off, its the angles/chicken scratches and spatial relationships that ruin the piece. angles & curves are some of the trickiest things to master because a little slip up can make the whole drawing look "weird"

There's no "one-solution-fits-all" but I've found that building the scaffold with straight lines and judging the spatial relationships by eye/refining them with comparative measurement/plumb lines/angles gets me pretty close to the final piece. At least that's the method that I've found that works for me after beating my head against the wall being extremely anal & autistic with my measurements as it looked like a topographic by the time I was ready to draw.

Good way to know when to stop is when you feel confident you can copy something without too much resistance. You don't have to have it down to the dot, I'd say you're pretty close already, just some proportion issues. But you really should be more confident with your lines and putting down less strokes, if you don't draw cleanly then measuring's gonna be tough later.

>How does this translate to me doing my own characters and finally being able to spread my wings?
The point of the exercise is to train you to be able to measure reference accurately. You can do that by just drawing too but this aims to drill the concept in so you can skip the part where stuff is wonky and usually takes a long time. It does not mean you can magically start drawing stuff from imagination but now when you have references for use with your personal work you can more accurately measure, break down and apply the information.

Instead of taking forever copying an image the first go, try to be a bit faster and loose with it and finish within a reasonable time. Compare by overlapping, see what's wrong, go back over without tracing. Faster also means to be more efficient with your lines, try not to chicken scratch. If you have to go over a line a few times, do it in longer strokes.
More importantly: Once you get to where it feels natural in theory, don't suddenly flush that information down the toilet thinking you don't need to do it at all anymore. Extend that habit now to references you collect for personal work to start with. You'll find you can do it (mostly) by eye eventually, but don't think that will happen right after you finish either. It's all about mileage.

>100 drawings

I don't want to be a Debbie downer anon but it's gonna take a lot more than 100 or 500 or what have you, even the seasoned pros still measure their stuff from time to time to make sure that everything is there. Granted, like the other anon said, you'll eventually become less reliant on these tools as they turn into second nature and the mileage piles up.

Art is not a race but a marathon, everyone feels like giving up at certain plateaus because things don't go your way but you have to keep pushing through the mud until it clicks.

Just remember that you're always competing against yourself, don't pay too much attention to the dick measuring contest between yourself and a random dude who has been on the grind for decades, it'll mess you up. You'll always improve by finding the flaws on your own work and working on those weaknesses.

>>6707584
Check the video course general, I think somebody uploaded that course a few years ago, although it doesn't have any English subs AFAIK, or the asg site.

There's also Erik Olson's perspective course from NMA, a lot of people give him shit for being a "slog" or "sleep inducing" but I've found that listening to him repeat the concepts over and over "so they're driven home" as he says certainly helped. You could look into Scott "autism" Robertson's how to draw book too but his explanations can be too technical/advanced since he assumes that you already have some perspective chops under your belt

Its been spelled out many times already, the point of the exercise is not to replace construction. Turning forms in perspective is literally the first lesson. It's to train people that don't innately have the ability to measure and proportion to prepare them for being able to study references bettet afterwards. If people genuinely expect that aftet doing these accuracy exercises alone will make them start drawing good then that's their fault for not understanding the entire rest of the method.
By all means, you /can/ do both but this makes the concept stick into people's heads that need it.

Sorry for the typos, phoneposting sucks. Anyway the order is:
>Accuracy exercise (basically sight measuring and proportion checking, no you still can't draw)
>Turning primitives in perspective (cubes, forms)
>Fundamentals (human anatomy etc.)
He's not teaching anything new or anything different from other instructors, the demystifying part is just getting that accuracy honed earlier so you do less guesswork down the line. None of these lessons by themselves make you a good artist suddenly but understanding why is important.

Anon, don't think that you're gonna sound smart by tossing that word around like as if you owned the average person who posts here. The only thing I can give you is that ateliers work with sight size, which is pretty much what the average copy looks like, but beyond that, the atelier students develop a sound foundation to do academic drawings.
Granted, the issue with sight size is that you'll always be bound to the vantage point you take to draw from the model since they can't make usage of comparative measurement due to the lack of training.

I think the general would benefit from watching this clip from Glen Orbik's class, he mentions how the famous "wall hangers" that many brick and mortar schools use serve an actual purpose beyond demonstrating the skill of their students, but act as a "cheat sheet" that you can steal from (I. E. If you're having trouble trying to draw legs/render hair or whatever, you can copy their drawing to assimilate how they've solved it.) which is the whole point of copying/doing master studies.

Haru's forehead slope is changed slightly by the bit of hair that covers the top hairline area. That's what I was saying though japs don't really like to show the forehead much. Anime isn't adapted to it. Some older styles like from the 90's even have the upper contour of the face shoot off into the void somewhere. The cheek is pronounced, it dips into the eye socket, and then blasts off into some mysterious position behind the bangs. I feel like you're very limited with what face shape you can use for a hairstyle without bangs. You have to get realistic which sucks if you're trying to be stylistic

Not to the letter. But the second time around you open the page, look at the figure, close it, and then reproduce it as best you can and remembering what you learned. Its to drill the concept in you not unlike master copies. You don't have to be 100% accurate or know every inch of anatomy by the end, just enough to where you understand. It's not as easy as it sounds anyway and kind of a crazy method of study, not for everyone and you could be learning from another kind of figure book more to your style. I wouldn't attempt it unless you already know a decent chunk of certain muscles and bones or if you really have the dedication to commit to that path.

Nice work.

Your values are muddy because it seems as though you're thinking of shadows wrong. So you're moving your original midtown just "down" towards black. The original artist actually just moved their midtone towards a more saturated hue. Don't think of "darker" as just closer to black, that's not the case. A color can become darker by moving towards a higher saturation.

In pic rel, I'm actually moving to a darker value even though it doesnt intuitively look feel like that.

Been drawing since I was a kid but i'll be frank that it's mostly been complete ass even up until I was attending college in the hopes of becoming an illustrator. Reality checked at the door and dropped out of several schools and jobs, I still drew but no sense of purpose. It wasn't until i'd say 2019-2020 where I wanted to seriously get better, that's when I started lurking here and collecting resources. So, last 4-5 years or so?
This year my goal is to get huge gains and get as close as I can in quality to my ideal artists like Rinotuna, hungryclicker, kousakus or Lhata4564 so i've been mad grinding anatomy and perspective which is stuff I lacked for so long.

1. Draw a center line always to tell if your figures are wonky.
2. Don't avoid drawing the feet even if it's just a simple rectangle without toes. Because it helps you place the legs in a way where you understand the pose. You can always crop the feet out if you wanna post it without but you need them to know how legs work.

Hi! I have been drawing for a while but I'm still pretty bad (as you can see in the pic). I haven't drawn as much as I would have liked this year so far, but I think I will be able to dedicate more time to it from now on.

Since I've started to draw I've read Keys to Drawing and I have done a bunch of the Draw a Box exercises. I have also gone through the first chapter of Figure Drawing for All It's Worth but I needed a whole year to do so (I probably should go through the whole book and finish it in a shorther time anyways).

My question is, how should I spend my time every week while grinding drawing? Should I just focus on doing fundies books one at a time or should I do 2-3 from different categories (one for anatomy, one for rendering for example) at the same time and try to alternate between them?

I also guess it would be nice to also dedicate a minor amount of time to copy drawings of artists that I like to train style or to just have fun in Drawpileand enjoy myself a bit and avoid burnout, right?

Oh, and one more thing, are the Krenz courses posted on the OP beginner friendly or should I just leave them from later? In the case that they are useful for someone like me, is there an specific order I should follow?

hi anon!

I think you should focus on anatomy and proportions first. You got a good understanding of the basics. Start by doing messy sketches, and using photos as references, hell, if you want to use your fav artist's art as inspiration, just remember to be messy until you're satisfied, it's a good start. Plus, look at youtube videos of speedpaints, tutorials, shorts, etc.

Draw when you're happy and feel happy, don't burn out, that's a big mistake, play music or take breaks. On this topic try to be happy with your work, avoid sadness and having the feeling that you won't progress, it's really hard to ignore, but we all have been there anon.

Copying an artstyle is totally up to you, you could try by taking simple artsyles, and slowly, but surely, adding more details.

On an unrelated note, you could try drawing clothes, and simplify them with simple lines as some animes do, it gives your drawing more personality.

Color, lighting, and shadows are important, you would be surprised how those three completely change a drawing, it's insane. Avoid using overly bright colors like neon! (they're good, but for beginners, neon colors are a mess).

About the day, choose the time that you want, pick a day, and focus on drawing what you're looking to improve (colors, anatomy, proportions, clothing, etc), hell, just drawing for 5 minutes every day is good enough. Just have fun and keep drawing :)

here's a little guide, so you could have an idea, I'm not professional but i hope it helps, see ya anon-sama.

I figured this would be the best place to ask rather than to shit up the board with another question thread.
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
I really like how Shindol draws. The way he does faces and expressions are very animated. I also enjoy the anatomy of his bodies.
I'd like to replicate this as best I can. Not looking to draw pornography, I just genuinely like how he draws things. Would much rather draw in a similar style but closer to SFW.

Any pointers?

Copy scenes from his doujins that aren’t explicitly H. Do that before you copy any standalone artwork. Eventually, I’d just go ahead and start referencing that stuff too once you’ve understood his typical trademarks and patterns to his style.

Also, I’d recommend purchasing one or two of his books that you really like. That’s what I did with a similar artist (eu03, only because I don’t draw digital. So copying from my computer screen was annoying for me).
If you are drawing digital, then I guess you don’t have to do that. But having a physical copy of something would probably help anyway.

Can somebody explain the whole krenz accuracy shape thing? I understand what hes doing in the videos up at the top of this thread, but Ive seen a bunch of people post pictures with more abstract shapes they've been copying. Is there a collection of images for those and a video that explains it? I'm assuming its mostly copying them over and over for accuracy. I work a mindless remote job so I need something to do in-between doodles.

I've been doing copies for a while and I've been told I should learn construction

But there's so many ways to do construction I don't know which is the best or "right" one

Should I do Loomis or Hampton or Vilppu or Hide channel?

Should I just imitate what art youtubers do?

Should I just pick a random Anime stylization book and go through that?

It's so confusing and it's the main reason why it's been taking me this long to even BEGIN trying to draw my own thing

I was also told construction is needed for master copies so... I'm pretty fucked

>I don't know which is the best or "right" one
Whether you draw ovals or boxes or cylinders or flat shapes is highly personal, just try them all and stick with the techniques you like.
>Loomis or Hampton or Vilppu or Hide
Doesn't matter pick one and work through it.
>imitate what art youtubers do
You can, you will learn some things from doing this but not everything.
>random Anime stylization book
imo your fundamentals are too weak to understand stylization deeply, but if that's what gets you drawing go for it.
>construction is needed for master copies
observation > construction for master copies, but having knowledge of the underlying structure (like by constructing it) will help you get better results despite weaker observation ability.

For construction, I think you should look at simple 3d forms and perspective first. Don't have to master it just get more comfortable.

Ah! thank you so much!

I was afraid I needed a specific type of construction depending on the level of stylization or the detail of the anatomy (stupid I know)

Thank you! I guess I'll start with Loomis since everyone talks about him

And don't worry I'm not neglecting my fundamentals
I'm going through Krenz notion and doing dynamic sketching and Erik Olson!

I mean, this is a thing that people do. But the construction is there to serve you, go into those details if you need it for the drawing.

Here's a study I did since I liked the style. It's not perfect one for one but I guess its good enough. You anons have any tips on trying to understand painting decisions on artists that you study? I did an entire write up for this study on some of my findings but my mind is boggling trying to figure out how this artist came to some of these conclusions and I have no idea how I might be able to apply them to my own work.

Pretty cool, thanks for sharing.

As for your question above,
>my mind is boggling trying to figure out how this artist came to some of these conclusions
all artists have their own process they came up with by experimenting overtime. I don't think it's possible to fully know why they do things unless you'd have access to their entire history as an artist.
In your case what would be good is to attempt an original piece/composition and try to apply what you learned as best as you can. It's not gonna go smooth but that's fine as it'll highlight the holes you need to fill in.
