Does everyone who does commissions online just have a business license? I’ve only ever sold my art for cash at garage sales and community events, so I don’t know how to do this more formally for online services like PayPal and stripe where they ask for business details. I don’t want my personal info to be listed publicly as some customer support hotline, for example.

Rule of thumb is you want a canvas that matches the resolution of what you want your images displayed on. If your work is mostly viewed on pc consider anywhere between 1080 to 4k resolution. Phones and images displayed on sites like twitter may differ on how images are displayed. Twitter is absolutely fucking retarded with how they show their images so be prepared to have retarded crops.

This is the only board I know of that uses “stupid” to describe the questions. Plenty of questions don’t deserve their own thread and it is convenient and efficient to place them in a single thread. But you are insecure yourself and projecting it on others, who in turn adopt this mentality. Perhaps it’s faux modesty to insult yourselves first in hopes that others will show sympathy. Either way, the threads on other boards have always been QTDDTOT, unless you are truly making a thread for “stupid” questions only.

It helps. You said you want to optimize your drawing time, I'd suggest doing 1:1 copies of parts of master works, like just the face or just the hands. Doing a full master study is worth it though, you don't have to do it all in one session.
what you are doing in these pics is good too. Maybe even go back to loomis and really get a deeper understanding. Like copying his more refined sketches in figure drawing for all its worth.

So I tried to actively get into practicing drawing since 10 days ago (have tried only some drawing here and there across several years now, even trying to learn at one point for some time but stopped), and started off with a 5.5x8.5 inch sketchbook; also didn't realize I had an extra one nor a fucking 14x17 inch version (the latter I never even made a mark on) until I found them stashed away in some shelves
First few days went by okay, refamiliarizing myself with basic-3D-shaping and perspective stuff (having fun with the latter), doing some dumb doodles of characters without real regard for the logistics (off-proportions and whatnot), and then try to do some look-and-draw of heads
But then when it came to trying to draw SIMPLE forms like whole bodies standing, or even trying to get more analytical into the body parts I'm learning (with trying to re-orient, break down into shapes, and whatnot)? Shit feels like it's starting to get cramped, and I'm not sure if it's just because I feel more conscious and obligated into trying to draw smaller to fit more (rather than having just one page be a medium-sized form or two/three parts), or that having less than half the area of an A4 paper is that much more of a detriment than I thought; I even reorient it to be wherever it feels more practical and (relatively) nice to draw
Should I just make the swap to the 14x17 sketchbook now and leave the smaller sketchbooks be for niche stuff, or man up and stick to those small ones until they're both filled up?

>> No.6688055

>>6687926
Porque no los dos? Every size sketchbook can have a purpose. Simply use whatever is more comfortable for whatever you are doing. Don't force yourself to use the smaller ones for everything or the big one for everything, just use both for different things.
If you've ever seen an art class or a life drawing class, you may have noticed everybody has those gigantic 18x24 sketchbooks. Big sizes are great for studying from life and other such learning exercises, though the size can be a bit unwieldy for more casual stuff. The 5.5x8.5 is great if you want to do some doodles or for drawing outdoors/between classes/at work. I think that's just about the size James Gurney uses for his plein air watercolor paintings.
That said, I would recommend trying a nice medium sized sketchbook at some point. I like the 9x12s.

Payment is through Paypal or the like. I imagine the artist you have in this image would be in this gray market cause they're pretty /beg/ and prices are low.

As for pro artists selling digitally, hopefully someone more knowledgeable can fill you in.

how do I learn the nuances of how to work with color? for example, I'm following a painting course and most exercises so far were just greyscale values. now that its gotten to color, he says "find images or photos that have color you like, and without using an eyedropper, pick those colors and make a pallet with them" The issue is though if you just take those exact colors and try to implement them in any way you want, it loses all the balance and small areas where they interact that makes it appealing to begin with.

Starting greyscale is a great way to get the initial values but colour picking does limit you if you are trying to work from real life ever or obviously if you want to draw from imagination.

Y'know those flipbooks where you just flip the pages very quickly to see a drawing "moving" (but is just a series of individual drawings flickering fast before your very eyes)? How fast they go through the pages can be thought of as "flips per second" (or FPS). So if they flip just a page per second, which is fucking slow, that's 1 FPS. They flip twice as fast, that makes it 2 FPS, or flipping two pages per second, or a page every half second; 4 FPS, four pages per second, or a page every quarter second; 15 FPS, there are 15 pages being flipped in a second.
Know that the pages don't have to look different; for example, they can all be blank pages, but even in flipping through 15 of those blank pages, it's still 15 FPS. Or 15 pages of what I assume your picrel to be a trash waifu, it's still 15 FPS even if all of them look equally as trash.
Now in the general world of animation, replace "flips" with "frames" and you get "frames per second." (Albeit in a slightly different context since a page is itself a frame, i.e. you look at 15 pages per second, but the core idea remains the same)

>> No.6694949

>>6694937
In one second, you are shown 15 images in a sequence. Look at your hand, move it in a big arc in one second. If you captured 15 photos of that arc in sequence, playing those frames back at 15fps would show you all those images sequentially in one second. If you capture 60 images and play it back at 60fps, you see 60 images in that second. And it would be noticable how much smoother it is, there are less "jumps" in motion between each frame.

Anyone else feel a huge variation in your drawing capabilities from one day to the other? Some days I feel like I'm able to just sketch whatever idea I had within a reasonable time, but other days I can sit there for hours, noodling on a bunch of different sketches with all of them looking absolutely atrocious.

I feel like I need a very clear idea of what I want to draw in order to do anything decent. How vivid of an idea do you have beforehand when drawing? If I sit down to "just draw" it seldom turns out any good. Kinda sucks, as this is the case for both casual sketching as well as more elaborate pieces.

The problems and messiness comes from the values. If you look at the drawing in greyscale (like the top left OG pic) you can see how flat it looks. Spider-Man is no brighter or darker than the distant background.

So the way to fix this problem would be to adjust the brightness/darkness somewhere in the image. The left is your pic in greyscale, the middle pic is same thing but I just made the lower half of the city background darker, and the final one I also added a black outline around Spider-Man.

It explains the way digital color mixing works, how it's different from real paint mixing, and how the real thing can be approximated digitally.

Look up "digital watercolor", "digital oil painting" or similar medium-specific queries.

I can’t seem to remember proportions correctly even a year later and have to constantly look at refs for it. Particularly with the head construction, and where to drop the side line/how big the circle should be/where to drop the jaw from. I end up mix and matching various techniques ie; dropping the jawline at the edge of the ball rather than the middle and building from there. For whatever reason that works.

In less words, how do I commit proportion fundies to memory easier?

Also, some of my forms are fine, whilst others look 2.5d. For instance, I can’t seem to feel the form on spheres or cylinders, but can do boxes just fine. The problem gets even worse when I try lineart.

Forgot to add that there's a sense of satisfaction for receiving artwork that you've asked an artist to recreate in great detail. Custom tailored to you. You get a shoutout from the artist for commissioning them if you wish, you might even get your OC some exposure if the artist is popular.
That's besides the practical reasons of the design actually being used for things like banners, icons, thumbnails for videos, dnd campaigns etc. There's an innumerable amount of reasons why people commission art that can be specific.

Ambient occlusion is only happening in the small area where the cube meets the ground plane. The shadow side of the cube is receiving bounce light from the ground and the top part of the shadow side is receiving more bounce light compared to the bottom part.

Doing fundamentals and realizing you aren't as good as you are is painful, but also humbling in a way. Can anyone explain why so many people seem to hate manual handheld sharpeners? I don't get it, why would anyone prefer those bulky electric ones. Is rotating your hand that hard?

>> No.6707306

>>6707272
The electric ones stop at an exact point where the pencil is perfectly sharpened without risk of overdoing it or breaking the lead. But I mean, its purpose is to sharpen lots of pencils quickly, like in a classroom or studio setting, or if you use multiple pencils for a piece. It's convenient to have at your desk. No one's saying the manual ones don't have a place especially when you're outside but the electric ones are useful too.

I'm going to start commissions soon since my followers are interested and send me dms about it. I got the TOS down and prices but how do I go about the turnaround time? I typically finish a drawing within a couple of days, do I put the turnaround time information in the TOS as "Art will take around a maximum of one week to complete"?
Also how do I go about slots? Do I start working on two commissions at the same time or do I focus on one first then the other? I'm an absolute noob at this, sorry. If you have other advice for me I'd really appreciate it.

Genuine retard here. I genuinely do not know what I'm doing and any answer I get online seems to change depending on who gives it to me. I have been grinding fundamentals, that's simple enough. But terms get thrown around and I just get lost.
>Copy
>??
What is this? Trace? Study? Reference?
>Trace
>Trace over an image
I kind of understand this. But I don't understand the value in it. Some people have said it's good some say it's bad.
>Reference
>Look at an image, don't overlay it or trace it or parts of it broken up for your drawing. You're trying to look at it, process it, and draw it
I think this is correct but This too seems inconsistent. I've seen some people use this term when referring to essentially tracing, or using the reference as something to trace over during construction.
>Study
>??
I do not know what this is or how to do it. Is it referencing? Or is it tracing? Or is it copying? I understand it has an intent to internalize what the core aspects of your subject is, but how do you "study"? What actions do studying genuinely involve?

>> No.6712476

>>6712383
>Copy
I tend to think a copy as a drawing of an image that u do without tracing with accurate proportions and details to the image being copied
>Trace
Tracing is only good as your intentions. When you trace you are trying to understand elements of the drawing such as line art, shadows, details like muscles or clothing etc. Otherwise it will not help your growth.
>Reference
A reference drawing is basically a copy drawn in your own interpretation. Usually when something is referenced, it is used as basis for your drawing. The drawings look similar but not exact like a copy. Think of the sailor moon redraw meme, same pose and background but the character is interpreted differently.
>Study
A study is just a copy(or trace) of an image for your own practice and understanding. In particular its usually of things that you think you are weak at. Like lighting, folds, and forms. I like to think of it as a visual mock test.

This is how I would do it. Base colors on one layer, multiple shades (lighter shades for subtle forms, darker shades for crevices or within cast shadows) for the shadows on a multiply layer. The shading looks more stylized than trying to follow a light source so I decide where to place shadows based on what forms I want to add definition to. Use a soft eraser to soften some of the shadows, then use a blender to soften/blend out others. I'd use the soft eraser on shadows for narrow forms like the neck muscles or clothing wrinkles to retain clean edges, then a blender for wider/rounder forms like the pecs or other flatter muscles. Cast shadows keep their hard edges. I did a shitty job here but just try harder than I did lol

Is there/ will there be a market for serialized independent comic book releases?

I'm thinking something Scott Pilgrim scale.

I think his approach to comics (taking inspiration from manga sized releases while using his own unique style) should have caused a revolution in copy-cat western comic artists being published, but I never really saw any such thing.

Is this a viable path? Say I come up with a decent story arc and attempt to get it published and distributed? Could I potentially have my own independent thing going?

I know a lot of this stuff is done based on a sort of leap of faith, but I don't even know what the moving parts are to visualize what that leap would look like.

There is a lot of genetic variation of the chest muscles (especially the lower pecs), sternum and rib cage. On some people they attach much lower/higher, and they come in all shapes and sizes, so sometimes you can see a lot or not much of the sternum and lower ribs. So, you can get away with quite a lot.
Looks like that drawing in particular was inspired by bodybuilder poses. Especially some of the older, more barrel chested ones. With some idealization/exaggeration as well.

I've gone through a few different sprints where I studied and practiced every single day, but I usually drop off and then have long stretches where I don't draw at all.

Hi I'm back again. Did you use a blur tool or a blend tool specifically, because they seem to behave different from each other?

I did a test, The top purple stroke is done with "blend" tool and the bottom done with "blur" tool. For the bottom, the softer edge was cleaned up with a hard eraser but the top was left alone. Unsure which is correct here

I have a similar palette for oil. See what you like and get a warm/cold version of red, green and yellow. Add to that a brown for mixing black, a white for highlights and maybe a light green for mixing skin colors.
I think as long as these conditions are fulfilled, go with whatever you like and test it out. Try to pay attention to how the colors mix, how fast they dry and how much pigment they have.
Have fun!
