If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
Completed: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit
New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
Dont read the stickies they are outdated, dont buy all proko courses, buy vilppu the god of teaching art courses!

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

neck is too long and shaped like a cone, torso is too small, hips are too wide, upper arm is too long, lower arm is significantly too long, one hip is larger than the other by twice the size, the breasteses don't accurately match up on the torso, head is too small and oddly shaped, I could go on.
I'm not redlining it because I'm not home, if you care that much drop it in the redline thread.
This isn't good and you know it isn't good, but with practice you could make it good. If you'd genuinely like to improve, there's a lot of help in the sticky as well as references, and tons of drawing guides online that sum up the same basic path.

depression doesn't exist. It's all in your head. Listen to some happy music, eat some good food, and turn on the lights to their full brightness. Get out of bed. Exercise and draw. Your physical state is correlated to your mental state. You're a wimp. Don't be a wimp. Be strong.

>she had a more boxy looking chin but the wide set eyes are prob on me.
it's not necessarily a bad thing, people here act like there is one true perfect form to anatomy, but a lot of people IRL aren't anatomically perfect. That's what makes drawing them fun, you can play around a bit. There are some almost universally locked ratios and placement for the human body, but most things can be moved around just a touch and it's completely fine. For what the other anon said, yeah looking at it now I think her head is a bit flat in the back, but you can easily fix that by adding a bit more hair back there coming off of where her skull would be.

I just got to the point in Loomis where he teaches us how to use the ball and plane method for constructing heads. I feel like I may be misunderstanding something though.

He says to drop the middle line down off the ball, then divide the middle line into four equal parts thats size if half of between the brow and the top of the ball. But would that just be splitting everything into quarters then? How far am I supposed to draw the line off the ball?

I'd like to make sure I'm doing it correctly before I dedicate my evening to practicing it.

The distances between the hairline, the brow, the nose, and the chin are roughly identical. If you are drawing a face from scratch, establish the distance between your hairline and your brow- then you will know how far the line drops off to give you the chin landmark.

at this point, you just don't have enough mileage to draw a head well. Mileage means the amount of time spent drawing. You are physically incapable of drawing a good head. The way to speed up your improvement, though, and to make up for a lack of mileage, is to lean to copy an image accurately. Accuracy makes up for everything, and makes construction and imagination drawing easy to learn.

Watch Krenz in this video, he explains everything needed to draw:

don't worry, it comes easily when you can do line drawing. Rendering is just getting the shapes of halftone and shadow to "wrap" around the form right. It's no different from drawing a candy cane and getting the spiral pattern on there. To learn rendering, just find photos and copy the shadows you see

Constant erasing is almost synonymous with slow speed and most every beginner (especially on digital) does it at first.

If you find your speed specifically frustrating, you can isolate and focus on improving it. But otherwise it's just another thing that comes with practice, most beginners sweat their speed and think they're freakishly slow. It's just the same phenomenon as, like, a runner's forum: a beginner might be running a 16 minute mile and seeing posts like "I was running glacially slow - almost 9 minute miles...", etc, and come away thinking they're physically disabled.

is ti normal to scrap sketches for hours because it looks boring and stiff? I havent finished a drawing in a week.

>> No.6711402

>>6711386
That could mean several things.
Could be that you are just simply just not satisfied with your current ability and just automatically trash anything you do.
Could be that you simply just do not actually want to finish a drawing for some reason. Maybe afraid of all the work needed to finish it, or that the outcome will be shit and thus all of that would be a waste of effort. And thus you are just unwillingly sabotaging yourself.
Could be that you are just using sketching as "time waster excuse" to keep yourself away from other more important tasks that you know you should be doing but they are not urgent yet and you can afford to put off. So that you have the excuse that you are doing something useful in the form of sketching.

Nothing wrong with just sketching a lot btw, it is good practice in the long term

Ok, I've been really split between which course/ book I should start when it comes to figure drawing, I've heard good things about both but I can't really decide on which one I should go with.
There's Vilppu's drawing manual video + book or Michel Hampton's analytical figure drawing + MH Figure drawing: Design and invention.
There's a good chance that I might do the other one in the future, but for now I just need someone to point at either one of them and go "just do that one"

How far are you supposed to be in terms of skills when you start a book like vilppus drawing manual, and when you do it, how often/long should you do the exercises in there? I am a person that thinks that he got the purpose and meaning of something, when in reality I just want to get to the next part of the book because I'm bored.

I posted some truly horrifying /beg/ shit here over the last 2 months, unironically being proud of what I have created. And looking back at my work I cringe at what I have drawn, how could I think what I posted was ok to post? I think I lack discipline and need to slow down, but I don't know how to. If you're posting your work you're already doing better than most of the cunts here too scared to do it, who gives a fuck if its bad? Its gonna be, its still "ok to post".

Obviously you'll cringe at your old work but don't just look at it thinking "this is me, I'm shit", think "that WAS me, I'm gonna do it fucking better this time by doing xyz" and if you dont know what xyz is you post it and take some shit from people who know better than you and might give you some good advice.

Bottom left is a Vilppu study, it took me about 10-15 minutes to get the entire body down. To me, you should try to copy as much as his book as possible if you can, you'll understand more and more what he's trying to say if you keep copying his excersises, well that's what helped me, I'm not sure what you're learning process is but
TL;DR I learnt from him by copying/studying his work.

Also if you're cringing at what you drawn before, that just means you're improving hopefully! Drawing takes a lot of time to train, it's like training your body.

>Learn perspective and maybe some color theory from books/ youtube (6 hours maximum, you dont need to master it)
Getting better at drawing is largely about purposefully correcting your mistakes and requires a keen eye that you must train on as much high quality visual media as possible, I recommend starting an aesthetics folder and saving every image you find outstandingly visually appealing and listing why as you do (you can find small parts of an image highly appealing too). If you do all of this you will probably have a good idea of where you want to go after. as much of a waste of time as it is, there are a lot of small tips that you can pick up lurking around ic and other art circles if youre completely new

I would suggest that you start with just drawing what you like, copy some pieces you enjoy looking at, to the best of your ability, and start learning drawing simple shapes (Cubes,Cylinder and Cones) in perspecive, until you get the hang of it. You need to make Drawing a habbit, so that you wont have to force yourself to actually do it, if you ever have the feeling you are forcing yourself to draw something specific, try to go with something else, at least in the beginning so you wont start hating it

drawing shapes is less boring than dynamic figures? obviously he will get bored before finishing and make goofy people at first but it will give a lot good figure practice which is what most people want to be good at drawing and will show improvement he can feel good about far faster than some drawabox shit like shapes in perspective

Some people say the drawing manual is an int book or whatever, but you can learn from it at any skill level. It starts with simple forms and introduces construction in a super beg-friendly way. The accompanying videos (you can find them in the video general) are worth watching as well.
You do need to spend time on the exercises, but they're things you repeat and integrate with larger works over time. The later chapters will be frustratingly difficult if you rush it.
tl;dr go for it now, Vilppu's the bomb

You should always strive for the best, no reason to follow an inferior path because it looks easier, you will get used to whatever you do, easy or hard. Bridgman gave me a lot of confidence in my figures which made me want to draw more while when I was doing simpler studies with shapes i wanted to kill myself and didnt gain much from it

It's just sometimes when I try to copy something I'm too harsh on myself for not being able to do it properly. And the more I try to draw things the more I understand how the shapes connect to each other and how perspectives work even if I can't replicate that yet. So even if aimlessly, as long I'm trying to draw something I feel like I'm improving. It's just hard to decide on *what* to draw, as dumb as it sounds, thats my main blocker.

But thanks for the suggestions, I will give a look on those resources and keep trying.

I'm not going to finish the drawing for you. I will tel you about making things more masculine. Generally the eyes and mouth are thinner vertically than females. I also made the nose and neck thicker, squared the jaw, and for good measure I trimmed his eyelashes and hair.

This is quite hard, even being a very basic requirement I'd imagine. I never did anything drawing-related before, and whenever I wrote or tried to draw I just moved my hand, so I'm not used to it.
In some ways, I feel like a baby learning how to walk

Yeah, this has been my approach, I stopped caring about being good or bad, and I'm just doing it otherwise, I will never learn anything.

Right now what I'm doing is trying to draw anything at least once a day, so I get to learn how to use my arm and get used to looking at PC screen instead of my hand as I'm using my sister's old drawing tablet for this.

here's the ref. I know there's a lot of problems, like the right (from our view) eye being lower than the left, the ear, the lips. Another update on my Loomis journey, the heads are looking like heads now! I'm pretty happy about it, I would appreciate some advice on any perspective/proportion issues i have.

anon here again. the art in this board is looking pretty decent, but could use some crit

work on anatomy before learning to paint/color/shade. this will help your understanding of the simple building blocks that make up the human body easier. i recommend "Love Life Drawing", or "David Finch".

honestly, solid. my only critiques are the right forearm is too small and too short, and the right lower leg isnt foreshortened properly, and again, too big. also finish the fucking hands and face.

same as the last anon, "work on anatomy before learning to paint/color/shade. this will help your understanding of the simple building blocks that make up the human body easier. i recommend "Love Life Drawing", or "David Finch"."

nothing i can say. just keep drawing. (also look up on andrew loomis)

the sonic is decent, can't really crit cartoon style characters, my only real issue is the girls face. it seems like you've got the basic understnad of the circle the triangle method for the head structure, but you need to practice placing the facial features on the face, to a point hwere it looks good. for example, the mouth. i would (on a seperate page) practice a shit ton on mouths from the smae angle (or different angles) until you get it right. thats what i did and it helped me tremendously.

stop studying bridgeman, he's shit

thats very slow. just keep practicing. i recommend watching "Proko", "David Finch", "Marc Brunet", or "Love Life Drawing"..

start grinding anatomy/proportions ASAP. im telling you, you have potential i can see. you're just missing a final key to unlock that door.

practice proportions. the right forearm is way too small and out of perspective. the face isnt that good. you should study the loomis method, and study facial features seperatley on different pages. grind each on and combine them on a face and you'll see what im talking about.

Alright, I'm trying to move up to greyscale. However, it doesn't quite look like like the pros do it. What can I do to improve? How do I into greyscale to begin with?

I downloaded some bush pack because I was overwhelmed by the default brushes in Krita and wanted a smaller toolkit. Yeah sure there's some proportion issues with my drawings but I draw for fun. I want to add more depth detail to my art, but I'm not quite ready to make the jump to color yet. I've tried drawing in color, but I'm not really happy with the results for my skill level and time-per-peice, so my thinking is that greyscale is a happy medium.

If anyone has any tips for guides I've love to see them.

Can you make sonic's body a little smaller? His proportion is a little off, also this is soulful
