If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
Dont read the stickies they are outdated, only buy all proko courses, use code kangaroo for 30% off

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I just read your reply above and it says you’re using Krita so I’d actually advice you to go the pen and pencil route because Krita is actually user unfriendly for beginners. The closest thing to drawing Miura inks would be real g-pen on clip studio or hard textured brush on photoshop. If you just want to grind fundamentals- figure study etc then maybe regular pencil tool on Krita be ok.

Streamline is a feature on brushes that helps stabilize your lines so that they appear smoother. higher streamline, smoother lines. to me, beg is "has drawn their whole life but never practiced deliberately" (and yeah sometimes those people are int), whereas prebeg or true beginners are "has never drawn since kindergarten"

the latter needs to learn the pre-fundamentals-fundamentals, like drawing what they see and how to cultivate a hobby of doing art; whereas the former might need the actual fundamentals like perspective or anatomy, or have weird habits they need to unlearn. basically the difference being one needs to learn stuff from books, and the other needs bulk mileage.

You might just need to do your six hours split into 2 hour segments if that works better for you. Honestly though you don't need to be maxing 6 hours every day anyway. Some days it will be more and some it will be less. It's better to get into the habit of just drawing every day imo.

What's the best way to do reference measurements while drawing digital, so that I improve my perception of proportions? Obviously I don't want to use crutches such as greeds and rulers, because even though I can get pixel perfect measurements, I don't think it will help me improve. I used standard comparative measurements with my pencil, when I drew trad, but it also doesn't work here.
Right now I open the reference, increase canvas witdth x2 and try to draw edges of my reference with pencil on blank canvas on a separate layer. I then move edges to the reference to see how they fit, then ctrl+z to get them back on blank canvas and fix them if they are really off. Is this a good method?
I can get measurements of the edges of the biggest shapes like this, but small measurements requier a lot of tweaking.

I finally picked a book to follow without worrying if it's the 'right one'. Vilppu's sketches are deceptively simple in appearance (the first few pages at least), but getting them to look right is actually kind of hard.

>>6706013
ive recommended Vilppu a lot, so I feel obligated to help you a bit.

First of all, I'm really glad you're studying Vilppu. Big gains await you. The most important thing I can tell you is to actually spend time doing those simple form exercises. I want you to draw circles for 3 hours, then bean shapes for another 3 hours. Do them for more hours if you can. It's a simple arm training exercise, just put on music and grind. Get those curves down in one stroke, with no underlying construction. Slowly turn them, and draw them from as many angles as you can. Being able to do them easily and quickly is what largely contributes to the "simple but deceptive" appearance of Vilppu's drawings.

Second, you should copy Vilppu's drawings, and art from artists you admire. Go on Twitter and download a whole folder of an artist's work that you like, and copy it through. Copy through Vilppu's drawings, and whole Bridgman books. This helps you apply the simple form skills to real drawings, and teach you something about anatomy and form.

Thirdly, make sure you go through the book at a brisk pace. One or two weeks per chapter. After that, go back to the beginning and do the book again. The later chapters inform the earlier chapters.

Fourthly, make sure you draw from imagination and have fun ;). If you're having trouble with imagination drawing, go to a coffeeshop or library and draw the people you see there. You'll be forced to only glance at them for a second, then construct their general appearance from memory. It'll really force the same skills you'd use for imagination drawing

Good luck!

Been drawing for 5-8 years by now and feeling kind of hopeless.

I've improved a lot and feel like I've been making major strides in my work, and others have been able to tell as well. However, I feel like I've just been endlessly exploring art techniques and topics, and haven't settled on an art style or work flow.

Nowadays I can't tell if I'm supposed to keep taking in new inspirations and learn from other artists, or stop comparing myself and focus on my own improvement. The only reason I even compare myself is just to reach the same level as professionals.

Anyone got advice for this? I still enjoy art, but it feels so dreadful to doubt myself all the time.

>> No.6706673

>>6706656
Have a concrete goal in mind. What are your plans with art moving forward? Is there an artist you admire or you'd like to mold their style into your own work? A project you'd like to do? Are you planning on breaking into a particular industry? "Reach the same level as pros" gets more vague the closer you get towards it and now you have to start narrowing down your scope so you know what to work on. Never really stop exercising your fundamentals though, because you can always improve your art no matter what. That's the self-improvement part, but if you think you're plateauing then you must be drawing enough to be able to do both that and do style studies. But again having a goal helps.

I'm about to be 30 and have never drawn anything beyond a stick figure or silly little smiley face. I figure in 10 years I'll be 40 anyway, might as well pursue something I find fun and interesting.

I just got into a 2 year digital art course with my dinky iPad Pro.

Like I said before, I want to bring MY imagination to life, so that's a pretty good motivator. The speed of which I learn depends on me of course, whatever happens, happens, but I'll be chugging along.

Rule #1- You wont improve if you don't draw. Always try to fit some drawing time into your daily routine (I recommend 45 min - 1 hour).

Good luck, bro.

Keep going, anon! Just a word of warning, drawing isn't just one skill, to paraphrase Robert Beverly Dale, it's juggling a lot of skills, and the best way to learn it is to learn each one to the point where you can use it without thinking. So how do I just stop caring that I can't do this stuff?

Because I can't. Clearly. I'm throwing myself at the sticky, I bought the books, and got the right materials and I don't fucking sit down and draw, it just sits around, and I only ever want to draw when I'm at work or busy with other things. Clearly I'm not going to learn, but I hate that I can't. When I'm away, I WANT to be good at art, because I want to share the stories I have, but I clearly never want to put in the work to be good.

So how do I give up caring? How do I just accept I will never be an artist without killing myself? I don't want to have these wants I don't fulfill, I'd rather be dumb and happy with my shit job than have whatever this itch is.

No no, I mean. People have natural affinities in art. Some people will be natural draftsman and have an easier time with perspective and lines. Some people are more like painters and have an easier time with colors and shapes. Find what comes easiest to you and make that into your foundation that allows you to tackle the areas that don't come easily. If people are drawn to art, they usually have at least one fundamental that they are naturally good at. If you have more than one, more power to you. Just find your thing, own it, and then grow from there.

First you need to learn proportions before going into anatomy, and then do rough gesture drawings (Basically a stick man with 30 second poses, draw head, line of action, torso, pelvis arms and legs.

Do this until you can draw a rough figure of the human body, something like pic related

the number one thing that catches my eye is the elbows(and arms) are not the same length or size
a good rule of thumb I use is that the human elbow on a human figure sits juuuust about where the ribcage ends, so in drawings I measure the distance on my sketch layer and use that same distance assuming there's no foreshortening going on. It's not an exact rule but on 90% of people it'll be within 2 inches of that exact point
as for the eyes, I'd have to see your work to really help you. Most emotion in eyes actually is in the area around the eyes, the shape of the eye itself+the eyebrow's general attitude are what sell it IMO

check some references of real cats stretching. it's a very dynamic pose, shoving the ass as far up and back as possible, stretching three major points across the body (plus the front legs)

focus most on the ribcage + front legs in ur drawing, resting them on the floor implies a very relaxed pose without any tension on the back. get some form in the shoulders and raise the whole thing up off the ground and forward for the more dynamic shape. also press the toe digits squarely against the floor so the back of the feet would be stretched

There's no such thing as studying too much Loomis so go take another quick look at his proportions, eyes should be at the center of the face, your mouth is too distant from the nose, face needs some fine tuning in general but you're on the right track.
As for values these are tricky, diffuse light is very subtle and hard to get right. Look for shapes of values in the reference, e.g. there's a triangle under the right eye (on our left) that doesn't match what you did. Contrast looks a bit too high as well, but again: this setting is tricky. Push and pull until it looks closer to ref. Flip between your study and the reference picture and it should become more clear.

As >>6708255 said, loomis is great. But you could also benefit from other artists/teachers. Steve Huston does free live drawing sessions on thursdays, you can find them on youtube. He is an amazing teacher.

Michael Hampton also has great stuff related to head drawing and planes. Those videos are on his youtube channel.

Sorry for the slow reply, I was watching a neat thunder and lightning storm.
Anywho, I want to draw black and white comics, be they mini-comics or otherwise. I think of Dave Gibbons and imagine myself reaching his skill level, a recent re-read of Watchmen in particular set off the desire to do art.
I also have a desire to draw things like Space Marines from Warhammer, especially since reading Bloodquest, it's super chunky and fun looking.
So generally speaking, stark black and white appeals to me and I want to be able to replicate it, but I don't know where to start so that I can do it for myself.

Never officially studied (never had art lessons an things like that) , 5 .5 years every school day for fun during middle and highschool with "HoW tO DrAw AnImE" instructions.
During 6 years of uni i sometimes did and sometimes didnt manage to draw .i looked at other artists and did some dabbling in anatomy
The latest step was proko and some resources from /beg treads .
studying other artists and comparing anatomical bonestructures with their faces.
Trying to figure out why some depictions of people (ugly bastard looking types for example) have a frog like mouth area (facial muscles apparently)
>also what do you asthetically like in media like movies, videogames ecc even irl fashion, what are your interests and hobbies, try incorporating some in your designs and you will have a bit more fun

I do not get to draw too much lately due to a job and other commitments but i at least try and doodle occasionally , while going for slightly more complex stuff when i catch a break.
Im slowly fixing the scratchyness , it is my main flaw (thank god you didnt see my older stuff)
, im also trying to figure out what not to draw but leave to the brain to fill in the gaps (look at some yoji shinkawa mgs coverart and you will prolly get what im talking about)

Drawing the Marvel Way covers good topics, but it doesn't feel like a resource that actually explains to beginners *how* to learn art. Most of them probably read through the book without getting anything out of it, because nobody's given them guidance on actually practicing (and they don't have an existing habit of studies/practicing - because they're beginners), so they mistake art as being more knowledge-based than motor skills, when in reality it's the opposite and then they wonder why they aren't progressing.

Gmi, but you're just copying instead of using 3d shapes to construct.
Look how it's done and then apply to something else, reference or imagination.

I know I've got it in me to have good fundamentals and measurments because I've done it well before, I just went downhill because I've felt bad.
Here's my favorite training sketch so far.

The worst part will be not drawing, but painting

No, ellipses are just hard.

What they don't tell you when they say "draw from the shoulder" is that it's not, like, magic. Your shoulder doesn't perfectly suit itself to drawing ellipses just because it's a ball-and-socket joint, like you probably imagined from how people draw perfect circles by swinging the whole arm on a chalkboard. Drawing a smooth ellipse requires a concert of muscle and tendon movements, your arm has to move progressively in all four directions in a controlled manner while (at any given moment) keeping the other axes of movement locked in.

My only personal recommendation would be to include practice replicating *particular* ellipses, either made with a tool or from a reference or just sketched out in multiple movements; not exclusively freehanding from imagination (which is all most books prescribe). But that's my recommendation for practicing all basic shapes and forms.

I only do digital. I like Steve Huston, maybe his stuff would help you. Jeff Watts has some good charcoal stuff too. But the most important part is 100s of hours of practice. Graphite is a bit easier, you could try that too.
