For me I hate how bland/sterile most comics/cartoons look, if they're not downright ugly that's it. The art styles of Todd McFarlane or Tradd Moore aren't exactly “pretty”, but they're really interesting and dynamic, which I can’t say for most other american works.

There will always be exceptions, but generally western stories are allowed to be "ugly". I don't mean the SJW shit people complain about or even just conveying drugs, violence or bad people, manga can have all of that, but they are also typically counterbalanced by humor or cute girls or something marketable. In the west you're a lot more likely to see ugly stories with ugly people with nothing to let your eyes have a break. This can be good or bad, depending on your opinion. Also, parody. Japanese comics aren't protected by parody law - you won't see political satire like you will in the west. Doujins aren't even technically legal. Drug abuse is also not typically portrayed to the same extent because even using weed is serious business over there - so you might see a bad guy portrayed as a junkie but never a protagonist.

Family Guy videos on Youtube subtitled in Japanese are also given clickbaity titles like "You can't air this in Japan!" if that helps as a guideline of what is and isn't typically acceptable over ther.
