If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

you can find your style by drawing both common and uncommon to your daily environment things that are appealing to you.
Draw your bed in an appealing way, then draw your pet/computer/favorite decoration then draw something that's out of your environment in an appealing way.
This or 24/7 deconstruction of your favorite artwork untill you know what you like to see and draw it.

pros use the circle because they think in 3D shapes instead of needing the beginner wheels that are squares and other shapes. It's all there is to construction - the more 3D your mind is or the more you have muscle memory - the less you need to construct.

construction is simplifying a complex structure untill you can easily draw it. You add finer details after constructing it correctly.
Construction applies both to 3D space, shading and composition (where things are on the canvas and in what relation to each other).
Art isn't as easy as they make it be, even an AI can't do good art if all 3 of these are not met and then it still needs that personal touch or style to stand out of the forgettable crowd which it usually lacks because that's how AI works.

I can shill you the best beg book i know: keys to drawing. Also you should try drawing using hard round brush with 100% opacity so your pics arent so blurry. You know, as if you are using fine liner or pen in real life. Or you know just draw.

Drawing is fun but the progress is soo slow my god thankfully it's fun or I would have stoped long ago. Also with the Internet we should theoretically be able to learn way faster than the ancient masters, what they did in 10 years, one might now do in 3 or 5 if you keep with it and use advanced cognitive learning tools based on science and the optimal learning path for you. For instance I recommend this website: https://pomofocus.io/app

It's basically an timer that is based on this method where you study for 25 minutes, pause 5 minutes do this for 4 times then a long 30 min pause and so on, because continuous learning makes you actually learn slower than to have regular pauses and they found that this is the optimal schedule for the human brain to learn.

Is there a plugin for Gimp that lets me create a grid overlay, but I can drag the corners of all grid boxes to reshape the grid? Basically a bunch of dots with straight lines between them, and I can drag around the dots.

Preferably I would like to not "finalize" the layer (convert it to raster) but could come back to it and adjust the dots, then work on a different layer, then come back and adjust the dots. Etc.

Cool work man. At first sight you can see lots of disproportions of course. Her thorax is huge in proportion with her legs. Forearms and calves as well. But it's not an issue of "art skills", but construction. I know we hate this, I HATE this when a teacher said it, "do construction". It is like the total opposite of what we want to do. But that's your path to solution. Do construction lines, as an approximation tool, it will never be exact, but it will make the image totally readable, and no one will nick pick at it. Practice construction lines with whatever reference you find. Be good at that and you can tackle any picture. If you grab that construction frame I did, and do the picture again, it will be flawless, you have good rendering skill. You just need the frame to place everything.

Krenz is hot now with construction methods, but you can do your own, is not rocket science.

I'm experimenting with different ways of going about doing this. I like the way you did the construction. It's not as ugly as most of the ones you see. I really think of construction and copying references as being separate things, but of course they aren't.
>If you grab the frame I did
Lol, I'd have to trace it off my phone, I don't have any way to do that other than copying it by eye which is what I'm doing in the first place. I don't have a printer and I only work physical. I don't have a tablet or anything like that. I imagine I'll get one eventually, but I'm still enjoying the pens and shit I got so I'm in no hurry to spend money.

I'm >>6693400 , actually I didn't expected you to trace the frame I did, because I see you're using paper. So if you can just "eye ball" that construction frame, that would be a great exercise. I didn't trace the photo neither, I did the frame by eye. So it's far from perfect, BUT it has enough accuracy to full the eye. that's the goal.

About Krenz, this anon is right >>6693433 in the fact the the guy is way too methodical for beginners, but I was referring particularly to his construction method, wich is being referenced A LOT in this board recently. And it's ok, he uses the same thing I did, you do lines and try to find proportions and approximations to find an almost perfect copy. You can do that on your own if you want. He just made a video about it, that's all.
Anyway, good luck anon! Keep Grinding!

Well, I actually disagree with both lol, people here like to put the carriage in front of the horse. I am thinking of a true beg, like, can only draw stick figures beg. IMO, the first thing someone should learn isn't to copy anime, or to measure, or to gesture, the first thing should be how to draw a line, and focus on pure line skills for a couple of months.
This is to make sure the beg can at least draw what he wants, then he can go and study from anime, comics, whatever.

lol, I really believe Krita is great, I just shill it when I see someone never heard of it. Gimp and Krita are way different. Gimp is like photoshop used to be, an image edition program. Photoshop became the drawing/painting perfect program, and Gimp just stayed more like an image edition software, very powerful though.
Well Krita, is like the drawing painting side of photoshop, VERY VERY, good. Usually I do most of the stuff in Krita, and if I have to do "photoshop edition" I do it on gimp. So you can use both programs in combination.
Krita+GIMP can perfectly replace the actual Photoshop. they are both free open-source. It's perfect. Also Krita is very lightweight and easy to install. But if you go with big resolutions and tons of layers, you may need 8GB of ram to work without hiccups on Krita. I usually work with less than 4000px canvas so I never had any issues.

Messy lines makes it harder, it gets really confusing where intersection points are esp. in narrow angles. Try a thin fixed size brush or use the line tool.
You didn't keep the verticals consistent. Draw a line down the center of the pelvis and see how it compares against the vertical lines on the torso. Even if you're doing 2pp you should try to keep these consistent, it'll fuck up your boxes unfortunately when you try to connect everything together.
Practice some cylinders, pay attention mainly to how round/thin the ends appear relative to the viewing angle.
Good job for trying.

>> No.6693903

Also with cylinders your goal is to visualize the curvature of the surface, if it looks flat it's not useful. Be more conscious of how you draw the ends or you can try adding some cross contour curves.

Any community based around learning or discussing anything becomes dominated by casuals and beginners. Firstly because there's more of them; secondly because as skill level increases, advice is less valuable and good advice harder to come by; and thirdly because validating the credentials of a poster and establishing a mutual framework of communication is a ton of work. So, most people - even at the merely intermediate skill level - eventually prefer to settle into a clique of people they know well, at roughly similar skill levels, with whom they can speak in reference and shorthand without expecting misunderstanding.

Thanks! I do have a decent amount of experience, ignored in art but quickly have been busy with life and only draw for fun and thus I’ve stagnated. I’ve recently been trying to find some way to improve my figure drawing and get more accurate, loose and dynamic. But I need more structure, and get overwhelmed and thus don’t know what to do.

>>6694855
I’m no pro. But I’ve been complimented on my line art enough that I think I can impart something.

Unfortunately most of my examples are too furry for here.

I find what really improves line art is thinking in terms of perspective and lighting. Line width to show weight for example, things closer are generally thicker lines. Places where objects press together get thinner. It’s hard to express in words.

Another big part is just line confidence and that comes with time. Not a bad start, though.

Studies will help 100%. Use harshly lit reference, like old hollywood headshots if you want to do portraits specifically. Take a break from thinking in 3d and try to reduce the entire image to flat shapes. Restrict yourself to 3-5 distinct values. Don't spend more than 15 mins on a single study, but repeat the same subject at least 3 times.
When you get used to laying accurate values down as shapes, you can try working in 3d space again. Here's >>6694075 an example of how I conceived of the study I was doing as a low-poly model as a preliminary sketch. Hi bros, two questions

- As a /beg/, is it a good idea to sacrifice a bit of proportions for the sake of confidence? I was drawing this plant with many leafs, and I was thinking, why spend so much time here, I could nail down the general curve and ratio, no one will care

- When can I move over to digital art? I don't care at all about layers or digital tools, I just like that I can have many different pens, and can color easily, but I read that it would be more efficient to git gud first on paper

when drawing large objects or repetitive objects(tree, bush, hair, ect) it is better to get the whole idea down rather get bog down with small details.

If you are planing to do digital art for the most part it is better to move on quickly but if you are planing to draw the rest of your life it is better to stick with trad first. Trad skill transfer better to digital then vice versa.

sorry I rather meant when to also start digital art, I would do the 2 together, wouldn't give up trad. I was thinking maybe the digital would still make things easier too much first?

digital would definitely make things easier, might become a crutch with the tools. I would suggest you learn with trad drawing and painting first just to understand how everything works and feels.

having difficulty drawing smooth lines on tablet. especially when it has curves. how do I practice getting better at this

>> No.6695258

the easy way is to turn on smoothing/stabilization and setting it to a low value like 10% the hard way is practice
or maybe your tablet is just kinda wonky try reinstalling your drivers
