If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I always struggle approaching sketches, because they're so... well, sketchy. Lots of extraneous lines and restatements, and stuff with line weight/shading that's impossible to replicate (at least without hours of pointless experimentation with brush settings).

Like, how would you approach something like >>6688239, where you can neither see clearly where any given line starts and stops, nor see clearly the exact contours of the face for all the restatements?

I tried to do the krenz accuracy thing and even though it took a lot out of me, it was strangely enjoyable after I got to the last one.
I definitely felt like I made some tiny improvements towards the end since, when I was drawing out the shell, I could feeling out the lines pretty ok.
Although there are still some massive improvements I could make, especially how I used a size pressure pen instead of an opacity one, which allowed me to feather my line work and in turn made is harder for me to recognise mistakes, and my line confidence is pretty rough but I can chalk that up to me not really drawing for a little bit.
But I'll definitely be doing this more often as practise before my other studies.

your linework isn't very clean. It's quite rough. You shouldn't try to move onto the next stage when the first stage remains unfinished.

Since you're working in line, and you're depicting a variety of textures, it's a good idea to reference artists. Find environment artists you like, who draw in line, and see how they approach these textures and plants and stuff. Linework and style is an area of study all on it's own.

Seeking out tricks and tips to "spring forward" only means there are going to gaps in your knowledge that those who worked through the process won't possess. If there's something they haven't encountered before, they'll at least have the foundation to tackle it on their own; whereas somebody who has sought quick fixes will always be looking to others to remedy their shortcomings. You think it's a fast track to going pro, but it'll only put you at a disadvantage in the longterm.

Doing another pencil drawing from a photo reference. The face values aren't finished, I'll have to tweak them later, but I'm working on the hands now. Well, not now, I only use this sketchbook at work and I'm home now so I'll use the bigger one for something else.
The biggest disappointment is how long this took. 25 minutes on the face during my first "break" and the rest is what I got done in about 35 minutes during later downtime. Most of that was erasing and redrawing the hand. This is where I was at when it was time to get back to work.
I could have gotten more done later, but I did cardio instead and then got sidetracked by helping an older colleague with his weight loss plans.
I don't regret it. I think some social contact was better for my brain than hacking out the rest of this today. I'm just happy I can get away with doing this shit at work.

Yeah, sorry about that. I now why that is though. Y resize everything to 1000px or so, and do the lines with the standard brush which ends up looking huge. I don't use pressure sensitivity so the line is one thick fat constant hose lol. Aside from that I try to give the figure "pointers", like certain lines, curves(fat?), and muscle details, that maybe shouldn't be necessary, but it helps the brain to remember things are there. Like some inner orientation instinct device.

Would be drawing geometric forms a good complete beginner training practice? I would feel more comfortable having a clear starting point so I can try developing creativity while doing so. I tried doing a small challenge of drawing *anything* at least once a day, but I ran out of ideas on the 4th day and sat around the 5th for 1 hour trying to choose what to draw and ended up not doing anything.

I think a clearer starting point would help my terrible brain.

It doesn't has to be "different things", but variations of those things as well. Like just cats, but just the cat shape.
You may feel like a "soulless machine" but that is because you don't have the tools to express that "soul". Art is that, it's an expression medium. You need the means to talk that expression. Otherwise your soul will never talk.
Just draw a thing, do iterations, make it easy for yourself, do simple stuff, use basic tools, paper and pencil, don't worry about scratching something, don't even erase, just do another, and another, and another. Have fun.

You have drawn a box, but you have not yet mastered the box. I too, have not yet mastered the box. The mysteries of the box have not been fully revealed to me yet. Perhaps if I draw boxes for 60 more years, I can make some more progress. It's elusiveness frustrates me. But, I know it's worth it.

Keep drawing boxes, my friend.

Not that I know of. The way to do it is to first learn the basics of figure drawing through Morpho. Then, you take that knowledge and study reference of other body types. Photos will work. You can copy characters in manga too. The point is just to take what you know and change its shape to fit multiple character types. The muscles and bones are the same on everyone

I was kidding. Don't grind boxes endlessly. I want you to do this guide:

https://davidfinchart.com/where-to-start-and-where-to-go-from-there-a-roadmap-to-professional-quality-art/

I sketched out the stages that this guide will take you through. First, you master basic forms. Then, you learn anatomy. THEN, you copy Bridgman Twice. After that, you do Loomis for heads. Btw, the whole time, you should be gesture drawing.

After all that fundamentals stuff, copy artwork you like and find your own style. If you want to find work, your style should be commercially viable, like anime or capeshit.

Good luck! Also, the brush I use is on the bottom. It's just a circle.

So like, dedicate the same amount of time tp gesture as I do what the roadmap says? Like 1 hour on the books, 1 hour gesture for example?
I dont really get gesture, it seems too intuitive for my learning style. 'Feel the form' and other nonsense, but sure i'll give it a shot.
>copy artwork you like
uhhhh... well i hope i find some artwork i like soon lmao
>Also, the brush I use is on the bottom. It's just a circle.

For Finch, gesture really just means “mannequin drawing”. You’re supposed to practice drawing a basic figure with cylinders and basic forms, while also building a mental library of poses. That’s all it is. Your practicing form, proportion, and acting. Just pick up the marvel way book, and it’s all clearly explained

Don’t worry about how much time you spend on what. The more you practice, the better you’ll get. Do the minimum 30 minutes on gestures, then spend the rest of the day as you see fit.

Don’t worry about the brush :)

NTA, the only way to learn as efficient as possible is to have a specific job, style or skillset that you can focus everything on, like, if you want to be a character illustrator, like the famous Instagram artists, it doesn't make sense to learn perspective at the same level as you learn color or anatomy. But just warning you, you still will be caught in the mud, that's just inevitable.
