let's discuss faces. What makes a good face in your opinion? i feel like faces are probably the most important part in a drawing. When is it too little detail, when is it too much detail? is it possible to make unattractive faces appealling or at least not tumblesque?

Proportion and symmetry may be the most important element to what makes up a good face, if a form or detail is out of proportion even in the slightest the entire face suffers. The difficulty comes from how to properly foreshorten forms depending on the angle and perspective of the face and knowing how to distort it properly.

Sargent painted Francis Jenkinson, the Cambridge Librarian. it was pointed out
that he had omitted many lines and wrinkles which ought to be shown on
the model’s face Sargent refused to make, he said, “a railway system of him ”

Some minor deviations I'm sure it is passable enough for the general audience and it's nothing a quick touch up wouldn't fix.

I like current anime faces. The general idea of "anime style" on this board feels very outdated.

I think a big part of appeal is how you draw faces. And drawing them perfectly realistic is a surefire way to erase any appeal from your drawing.

There are no standard desu. Even the "Tumblr style" have a huge fanbase. It up to the artist to discover what is pleasant and unpleasant to self and others

Faces are really the only thing I can draw without needing a reference. The most important thing is memorizing proportions.

Once you got them down, then you can play with them. Knowing how to draw proportions and purposely manipulating them is "style". If you don't know how to draw proportions and fuck them up, it's obvious and just perceived as bad.

Practicing drawing in other artists styles can help you find your own. "Too detailed" /"too little detail" is relative.
