If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
Completed: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit
New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
Read the stickies

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Not sure. I tend to draw from wrist due to my half-lying position I tend to take and the fact that holding the hand up is quite tiring while keeping it on the tablet causes pretty awful drag that screw with drawing precision anyway even with my makeshift glove on.
Other thing is that pure lineart looks usettingly clean and empty

STOP! The Western way of learning art is degenerated beyond repair! Just do what the nips are doing and you might gonna make it. Throw away loomis, throw away bridgeman. Just draw cute anime girls all day everyday. Every great artist did it like this. Fundies are a meme and waste of time, they will cause depression and burnout. Just copy what you want to draw yourself one day and don't stop. Art is not about being anatomically correct, or having perfect believable perspective, it is about looking nice, don't learn bad habits, draw from your heart.

Trying to follow mignon's book on painting skin and this method is referred to as "mask painting" in the machine translation. I know about clipping masks for not coloring outside of the base layer, but these settings seem to allow the different parts of the palette to be separated into layers, and they aren't seen unless you draw on top of them.

I don't know if I can say there are "wrong" things here. But there's a lack of proportion balance at first glance, her torso looks tiny and her arms and legs so long. But those proportions could work if that's your style and you make something awesome with that.
Anyway, I did a redraw so you can check if something adds up to your ideal of appeal. Art is very subjective.

I don't paint it too much, because it is difficult, but when I do I break it down into really simple shapes that just look complicated. I think it kind of works like icing on a cake. Water is getting pushed around, but it's still going to have shadows and lights like everything else.

So I block in the water with a tone and then with a darker tone go back and forth creating long, wobbly X's or like a chain link fence kind of pattern and they get thicker the closer they get to the viewer. But if you were painting water from further away I ~think~ the idea is the same, except the wobbly X's are just thinner and smaller and you get a gradient across the water for the different values.

Again, I suck at this and don't do it often, but this is what I do.

hello i am looking for general advice other than art and a friend recommended i post here!

i turned 18 a few months ago and recently graduated from high school & have no idea what to do now that i am an adult with no college plans lined up & living with my parents. i am thinking of taking a gap year to work and save up money, then going to community college & transferring into either art school or going into engineering/computer science after 2 years. my grades are not good enough to go straight to normal college right now (long story)

i was mainly wondering if my art is good enough to even bother with art school? i have not the best grasp on anatomy and i dont know if my style is interesting enough to catch interest in a portfolio.

engineering is something i would rather keep as a hobby, i know that's backwards but my real passion is art. idk. should i give up and focus on something else? is art school worth it? do i have time to improve substantially? sorry if this is too long i am not used to 4chan

here is a wip for reference of my art skill as it is now, unfinished but i drew it last night

Your art is very strange and awkward, which is exactly what art schools are looking for!

Please don’t fucking put all your eggs into art. Even if you draw like Kim Jung Gi, it’s a fucking struggle making a career happen. You will never be able to draw what you actually want, and yes, that is a bigger deal than you think it is. Most professionals become soulless husks of themselves after 20 years of drawing Disney cartoons. Even if you do everything right, jobs dry up anyways, the economy goes down the shitter, and you’ll either be homeless or living with your parents for a few months, trying to get back on your feet. You better have a supportive spouse that’s willing to pay the bills.

If you’ve been around long enough, you’ll see that there are a fuck ton of artists who draw at a professional level, who don’t have a career in the arts. There were people at my art school who drew better than professional artists, who don’t have a career because of insecurity and lack of networking. They end up depressed and suicidal.

You should just do something else and try to make art happen on the side. When your income from art surpasses your day job, is when you can quit your day job and do art full time

>> No.6678910

>>6678907
thank-you for replying!!!

i agree a career in art doesnt seem very viable... i was already half-way convinced i shouldnt bother but i think you're right. the problem is the area i live in is very saturated with tech careers so it might be even harder for me to find a career in that also. maybe i should just move :P

but i appreciate the advice!!! also what in particular do you think makes my art awkward? is it the anatomy/expression/pose? i struggle with all of those things so any advice is helpful lol

I would recommend doing it on your own there's usually a video course general on this board but I guess the anon that keeps it up is out or something.
There's also the /ic/ torrent >>>/t/1069595
There is also the artbook general >>6675797
Personally I like Hampton as a starting point because that's what I did but the truth is after years you'll pick up bits and pieces here and there so if don't sweat it if you're not a pro after one course.
If art is your passion you should pursue that imo, but that choice is yours to make.
What I would reccomend is going to figure drawing classes as a supplementary of you doing stuff on your own, if they teach you well ofc which you''ll be able to pulse when you do courses beside it and can get something from different teachers
Your stuff looks nice btw

Profession first (sorry, capitalism sucks) then branch out. At least with a professional degree you can use it as a fall back plan.

Join arts clubs/organizations while working on your degree and work on/improve your portfolio, while keeping informed of any other artistic opportunities/careers that might open up (networking, newsletters, LinkedIn (unfortunately), etc.).

It might be a bit late in the game, but do you have an interest in architecture? From what I'v heard it's very competitive and labour intensive (not to say that engineering/comp sci is any easier), but it does definitely incorporate a more aesthetic/art-centric element.

Also, I think it's really impressive when STEM-cels incorporate whatever artistic skills they have into the designs they come up with (See: Da Vinci, Vitruvius, the guy who built the Parthenon, etc.)). An engineer with an aesthetic eye is rare... to say the least.

Why do I even draw... to escape reality? Why yes, of course. But why? Is it because life sucks? Don't normies who go party and chose to not care about how fucked up life is escape reality that way too? Why are we so hated for creating our own worlds when normies do it all the time?

I look into the future and I can only see dystopian horrors beyond our current comprehension, psychological enslavement on a scale never seen before that even the pinnacle of power by the Catholic Church can't compare to what is to come. Just learn it one function at a time, and only learnt he functions you need. I use csp and I only know the manga functions. I don’t know anything about how to paint in it or make animations, because I don’t need it and I’ll forget anyways.

When you ink, you should go way way slower than when you sketch. Each line should be crisp and clear. Think C,S, I lines. Pay attention to overlaps and compression of forms against each other. Inking is really a very difficult test of your drawing skill, and if you lack in solid drawing, you inks won't look good.

1. Use stabilizer if possible.
2. Quick lines are less wobbly than slow lines.
3. Use a new layer to draw your next line, so you can overshoot your line and erase without worrying about erasing old lines.
4. Use rulers to help draw curves if possible.

Digital lineart is something that's been bothering me for a long time. I've found a few tricks to help, but it's still the most difficult thing I do.

Hello. I just my tablet today (huion with no screen) and after getting used to using a pen on this by writing the alphabet and drawing some basic shapes. I tried sketching a favorite character of mine. I started around 11pm, and just finished now so it took me a while. THe hardest part was definitely the hair, that must have taken half the time cause of how many curves and ends it had. Also it turned out smaller then I thought it would. I used krita for this and the brush im using seems to be blurry. Ill try using a more defined brush next time

That's cool, that you managed to handle the tablet pretty quick. If you're doing lineart use the dynamic brush tool, it has a stabilizer that you can adjust in the tool options, I have it set at mass:0.15 and drag:1.00.

If you're going to sketch, you should use the sketching chrome thin with a black color. That brush has a little bit of stabilization weird engine, it's great because you can be loose and at the same time there's a drag that follows your lines wich helps a lot.
Good luck man.

>>6680145
When you sketch you're building something, you're not precise, you are looking for shapes is a messy drawing. Once you have a clear idea done, then you grab a solid brush and do clear and clean lines on top of the messy sketch. Artist usually say that that is the hardest process, the lineart. Because you need a steady hand, but with the Stabilization tools (dynamic brush tool in krita) that process is much more easier. You will see.

I would like to get some guidance on what to do to start growing and making some profit, these are 4 of what I consider my best works. I really like to create scenarios or establish a little story in the works like work 1 (From left to right), so something like concept art would be something I would be interested in getting into.
However I feel that this field (and actually all) of art is very tight and it is difficult to be known or stand out from the rest.
I'm currently studying a career very different from art, but I don't really like it as much as art, my ultimate goal is to create something that people like and share, whether it's a video game, a comic, a comic, an animation, whatever. I feel that if I take a risk and bet on art I could have some positive result but I don't know what to do to achieve it.
Any advice on how to get started in this career even though it is extremely competitive?

Go to twitter, go to Facebook, instagram, tik tok, show your work to the normies who consume visual content all day , don't capsule your work in a bubble with other artists like you. Like deviant art i.e.
And be aware that, it is quite possible that the career you're studying right now, will give you a good life, and art will only give you uncertainty, not because you're not good, but because making a business of your art is too fucking hard. Most of the times, it never happens. Most artists expect to be part of a big project, but that big project usually is in the hands of another poor bastard having the same dream. The "industry" is too flimsy and uncertain. You need security first of all, whatever you do finish that career you're doing now, that will be the most important thing in your live. "Art" can be learnt, people pick art at whatever age and they learn it, but it won't give you a career or a job. Just finish your studies and after that do whatever you want.
