**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

I'm also new! Hope you're ready to deal with my stupid questions because i'm only leaving this board when i get good or die trying.

I've been in head practice hell, i always fuck up the eye alignment somehow, should i use more guidelines in construction? Is this shit even worth grinding it seems most people just draw the head from the front or from a side profile all the time, idk if i am happy with that tho.

General rule of thumb is that wrinkles form in areas where clothes pinch and fold. Second thing to take note of is the material that the clothes are made out of and observing how those fold, slack and wrinkle. Third is how clothes get affected by getting wet or torn/distressed but that's supplementary. I suggest looking at animations or drawings by animators on how they simplify clothing folds to start with and supplement doing some more realistic clothing studies. You'll find a shorthand you like that fits your style over time.

I also really like this desu, would love to draw like that without tracing shit

at this point I really can't get the head proportions right without tracing the head shape. once I have the head shape and a dot for the nose, I can then draw in the eyes and mouth and hair by myself, but if I don't trace the head I end up with something disfigured af

it sucks

I'm using pic related to trace the head shape

it works very well but it's also restrictive in the sense that it's just one type of head and there are more, like the anon I mentioned above whose heads are differently shaped and more mature looking and I like them but I can't achieve it cuz I'm only using this crutch template

Hopefully at some point I'll be able to draw without this crutch, but right now, if I don't trace and try to freehand, I just have to luck into the correct face shape, it happens once in every five drawings or so. huge waste of time

thank you! i started painting shit with the mouse and wasted a good amount of time on that, all terrible because my sketches were terrible, i only started learning how to actually draw with form and construction like 2 weeks ago, theres so much bs info online its a layer of difficulty on its own discerning whats helpful or not. The 3 yt channels that helped me the most were minimaru comic, naoki saito, and marc brunnet. start from the most basic tutorials you can find. Don't ignore your line quality because its really important, you can have awful anatomy/perspective but if your lines look good it will still be ok. Don't overhelm yourself and try to practice what you learn one thing at a time, and right after you learn it if possible. Try to draw what you actually want to draw, in a simplified manner, to keep you motivated. It just takes time desire and perseverance.
>>6678404

The pic I attached is called a "model sheet" or settei. The link was in the sticky:
https://setteidreams.net/settei/
It's used by anime artists to make a character from all angles, to keep their hair and face and clothes consistent in the anime.
It's VERY useful to use as a base for your drawing because of the "all angles of the face" thing.

Just search some animay you like in that link and pick up some reference sheets.

>>6678523
I love this drawing you posted, anon. Her face is so dominant. You're nailing the haughty small/squinty eyes look, I'm actually gonna save that.

I'll watch the videos, thank you.

>>6678574
what helped me was understanding that, as the character turns, the eye further away from you stays the same height, but gets thinner and thinner due to perspective. look at the pic I attached to this post, bottom middle face. The eyes are as tall as each other, but one becomes quite thin. Also always add a pupil, a black dot in the center, to your eyes. Shade the eyes dark at the top and lighter at the bottom of it. Don't make the eyelash too thick and don't connect it all the way at the bottom (see this pic again). Also always add a little line that's the "hood of the eye", it's the "_" kind of line between the lash and the eyebrow.

Start with smaller eyes, it's easier to put in the iris and make it look good if the eye is smaller. and watch mikeymegamega's youtube video on drawing eyes he does it in real time, very helpful

>>6678669
horrible, unhelpful advice. "draw trillions of things" is so stupid, everyone KNOWS they have to draw more. use your expertise instead to point out what to focus on and explain the things you've learned. Don't just say "draw xd" like you've discovered something there. Fucking retard.

this is pretty cute, I like her expression, but the eyes gotta be rotated a bit better, something is off about the face direction cuz one eye is shifted one way, the other eye goes the other way. draw a vertical line for the face and align the features

the boobs would not be perfect circles in this pose, even tho the arms arent squashing them, the clothes would, so I'd flatten out the sides a bit and add a few clothing wrinkles

you draw hair pretty well

>>6678797
hair once again is good, props if you drew it and not traced it
face once again is fucked, the chin point should be shifted left a bit. i see you dont draw noses, is this a style choice or do you not know where they should be? a nose would help you align the other features, even if you erase it later

perspective is very bold, I like that you're trying it, it's good training. ass and shoulders are good, hands obviously are too small and simple, shoes need work but they're the hardest part due to perspective

good luck anon hope it helps don't give up or I will FUCK you up

*Do* you need more details? This should be extremely apparent to you, but I'll give you more details.

I suggested lowering the head and increasing its size because, as it stands, the neck is way too long and the eyes are way too large. BUT if you were to increase the head and jaw, then this neck length would be fine, and this eye size would be fine. There are multiple ways to solve this issue, I tried to suggest one that solved more issues at once, not just fixing one by one.

But the fact that you're asking for more info after I gave you a full paragraph tells me you disagree and are trying to argue against my points, which is pointless, if you don't like the advice just disregard it

anyway, hope the clarification helps you, on the off chance you asked for it in good faith

Thanks! every time I try to copy this artist style with construction I always make the head wider for some reason, and I'm kinda torn between keeping that proportion or not. And yeah, the scales of things are kinda all over the place.
Also, really nice work on drawing the face. I am by no means an expert, but I'll list you some pointers to help you. I hope you don't mind.
- a more warped angle on the top headband, following the front of the face
- the head is a bit more protruded to the back
- place the side ribbon on the side of the head, not on the back
- the v sign of the fingers are not lined up properly as the other fingers
- the right arm is a bit too long
- the breasts are not attached properly to the torso
- pelvis seems nonexistent
- right leg looks uncomfortable and are not attached properly to the pelvis
You're very much on the way there, anon. I'm also still learning about a lot of things, but pic related is what I had in mind. Feel free to correct me on things that I'm wrong about. Hoping this is helpful for you anon, good luck!

bruh are you sure you are not too zoomed in to chicken scratch like that? just ghost it a bit then try it in one stroke. ctrl +z until you have a reasonable accuracy. could be a dozen attempts per ellipse.
>pic rel digital day 1 attempt
my attempt on a h1060p i got last week. i am very new to digital and it feels very diffirent for me from trad pen and paper because of pen tilt and pressure stuff. took roughly 2 - 2.5 h
all done in one stroke with wrist in counter clockwise motion. (im left handed. could be opposite for right hand) at reasonable zoom level. ellipses were the hardest part. i just put 2 oppoosite points on the circle and tried to make an ellipse go through them. aroud a dozen tries for each. i wasnt aiming for perfection or anything. ellipses slanted at 120 to 135 degrees were most accurate and a comfort zone for me. No real point at going for harder angles since i can just rotate canvas. didnt try to draw things perfectly. just to get the hang of things.

I think you'd want to try full figure first, using very simple shapes like spheres and cylinders or boxes, to get used to the lenght/width of each limb and the ratios of the body, then only after that you would practice the actual shape and anatomy of each part individually, then put it all together

>>6680599
Have you been copying them while trying to figure out how they built and posed the character? You have to learn how to construct it, in perspective, using shapes, then copy a pose you like, then draw it from a slightly different angle or perspective, and add the features of the character you have in mind, there's a lot of illustrations using the same poses but they're not always identical, if you know how to pose the body correctly you can change them slightly, or a lot.

Anyways i need to learn how to draw hair, does anyone have tips? Also i use a weird reverse Loomis method, i draw the neck area first and build the head up from there going neck>jaw>ear>skull. does the order matter?

try simplifying it using shapes
for example start on the bangs and use a square across and then form strands and erase the excess lines.
Simplifying the hair strands intosimple shapes further can help when it comes to drawing the hair.
Also if you draw a point in which the hair is coming from it can help give the direction the hair is coming from.
I drew examples that make more sense than I can explain .

This tends to happen because your line brush has some opacity variance in it's texture, idk what software you use, with CSP it can be mitigated by increasing tolerance of the fill tool, with Photoshop i think it's called "feather". you're miles ahead of most people who posted their shit in this server, me included, and it's clear from your lines

i hope you're just baiting for compliments and not actually this self hating for no reason. there is always gonna be something to improve in one's art journey, it's a lifelong commitment to constant improvement

and there's variance in skill, if you practiced drawing one pose for 30 days and then suddenly try a new pose, and it comes out uneven, that's not a sign you suck, you just haven't practiced that pose. '30 days of practice' only makes you better at the things you practiced, not at everything else

I'll post my work: the heads on the left and center side of the page are drawn from reference, the ones on the right side of the page I just tried to draw freely.

the fedora guy is a big fail, I tried to draw a woman but the chin was too long so I put her on hormones and this nightmare came out, just forget it. I think snake girl is almost okay though, just the eyes are too far apart

keep drawing, keep practicing, enjoy the process, honor your waifu by drawing her a lot. you're gonna make it if you don't implode from self hatred

You've probably heard it around here before, don't just copy blindly.

Learn the basics of perspective and vanishing points, so you can draw basic forms:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-buLx_tV6U
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv3Yvfouf2o

Learn how to use said basic forms to construct whatever it is you want to draw:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avcygKfCoXQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m0qnJmR4YY

Read the Krenz course in the pinned

Then you can take an illustration you like, try to visualize the vanishing points in it (Each object can have its own set of vanishing points) and do your best to reconstruct it, basically reverse engineering how they constructed it, so you learn how to construct a similar thing, makes sense?

Meanwhile i do more head practice

i like her, you just need to figure out how to get the head shape right, try to practice with just the shape of the head for a bit, without hair or anything. I think the cheeks are really big on everyone so you'd probably want to start there, getting the jawline to look closer to your ideal, you're kinda scuffing the area where the jaw connects to the ear

Symbol drawing is a meaningless buzzword outside of the context of trying to copy a model, in which case everything that comes from your preconceived notions instead of observation and measuring is indeed wrong.
In other cases it's just not an useful descriptor, drawings from imagination are all inherently symbol drawing because there's no original model you can observe and measure against.
People will use it as a catch-all critique either in wilful shitposting or laziness/inability to describe what the actual issue is, so there's no telling what someone means by it when it's used like that. It could mean the sense of form and three-dimensionality is lacking, an element such as anatomy or drapery is generic and shoddy when reference or study could've made it better, the lighting doesn't make sense, or any other number of things.
They're all valid issues with a picture but they're not fucking symbol drawing, the misnomer isn't an actionable critique and helps nobody.
Starting from the eyes is a bit eccentric and going for details before taking the broader 3D form into account can lead to flatness but symbol drawing is like the least helpful thing anyone could say about it.

Not trying to be rude, but it feels like you're just copying what you see without fully internalising, in all honesty. The original illustrates the structure of the hair in a way which looks like it's pined at the back, while yours look like an anomalous blob. The pearl pin and the ears are also areas which strike me as just copying without enough understanding. Still, good study, look forward to seeing more from you, especially your own works, where gaps in understanding would be more evident.

realize that you dont have to draw much detail in backgrounds. two things:
1. the further away a bg object is, the less detail it needs, sometimes just a splotch of green is enough to indicate a leaf etc.
2. anything that's not in main focus (around your character) can be blurred and undetailed and it works just fine.

there, now you dont need to draw a lot of background, just some basic stuff and a few details around your character. your work just got reduced by 90%. enjoy.

Adjust your pressure sensitivity, it's probably on garbage default settings or you haven't messed with it enough, it makes a tremendous difference, if you're on Photoshop or another program that doesn't let you adjust it try one that does. And if even after all that you can't get it right, why not use a brush without pressure opacity or size? It can still look good and have good line weight and variance if you know how to use it. Also try using line smoothing on/off and at different values for different lines

have a look at pic related. if you have a bunch of bald heads, that's good, you can now practice hair. do long strokes for each strand. my advice is to do fat strands and little strands, but no medium sized strands because those tend to look noodly. draw like 5 of these hairstyles and see which came out decent, and look at the ones that came out badly to spot mistakes and improve for next time.

if you want even simpler, then look at the first two heads in the pic I provided, try those. these hair styles are basically three shapes - 1. bangs, 2. left side hair, 3. right side hair.
you can make a basic shape for each of them with just 2 pen strokes. that should be the absolute basics, then you can sharpen these basic shapes, think of it like a sculptor carving out a chunk of rock first, then putting in some details

I think that hair can work if you're starting out. I'd give it a bit more volume on the top half of the head, just a few pixels higher so that the hair is like a layer on top of the skull, yknow, but dont do it if you're not sure how

also this should be obvious but since you said you're pre-/beg/: when you ink, keep the large shape of this hair like I highlighted in red. keep it as one, don't split them into multiple thin strokes like you did in the sketch. can add a few smaller ones here and there but sparingly

dont worry about the cheeks, i just added some cute cheek shinies for FUN because drawing is fun, supposedly. fuck doomers embrace fun

I watched 6 hours of Krenz youtube videos, then drew this from imagination. It's like a third time I'm using a tablet to draw, too. I feel like that's a massive improvement for me.

what krenz helped me with was: focusing on longest shapes, turning off pressure sensitivity on the pen and giving it a slight crayon texture, operating only in smooth curves (if a curve must be less smooth, then construct it out of multiple smooth curves), and using large guidelines and points to indicate positions of features

for reference, this was me before I watched Krenz: >>6683692

but obviously moving and transforming stuff in digital helps a ton compared to drawing on paper.

I know it ain't much but I'm really proud of this sketch

you should fix your line first since its the foundation
as for rendering, keep in mind where the light is coming from, try to imagine it in 3d or look for references, because right now shades are a bit random on your drawing
also dont use airbrush too much, hard edge shadows are very important too, as shown on this image from guide thread
lastly, decide on your shading "style" - if you want an anime-like shading you only need 1 value of shade, make it simple and mostly hard edge, for more realistic you gotta use at least 2
basically just watch some tutorials and see what you can improve and dont be discouraged to start over, hope that helps

Daily reminder that image generators are nothing more than automated, gacharolling photobashing machines. You see this image? This is all this garbage is and ever will be, and don't you dare @ me with "duhhh da technogoly will improve," because it won't. The technology is 100% built off of creating interpolations of images fed into it. No amount of OOOOOH I'M GONNA, I'M GONNA IMPROOOVE is ever going to fix a fundamentally flawed design. The only people that it will ever be useful to are grifters and scammers who were already stealing other people's work, who have to live like roaches, scuttling about in the dark snatching up crumbs and fleeing when the lights are turned on. Image generator output is not copyrightable and is being banned or soft-banned on more and more platforms as time goes on. There is no future there.

This is nowhere near "finsihed." Fix the hand. Fix the torso. Move the belly button left. Broaden the pelvis. Remove one of the bras so that she only wears one, like a normal person would. Move the shoulder strap closer to the neck. Fix the folds of fabric under the belly button, I have no idea what these are. After that, fix the hair, it's very thick and heavy and therefore it wouldn't float so freely and widely, it'd be pulled way down. Also fix the shape of the forearm that you hid behind her back because you didn't want to draw the hand.

If you do this, it'll be "finsihed." At this point the drawing is about on par with your spelling.

go to the video course general, download 5 gb of hand references, you'll have around 800 pictures to reference. dont just put in lines hoping they'll be right if you do it enough times, it's not worth the time investment

here's what i'm trying to say, i think you exaggerated how low the pelvis is
and the bone bump is not evident depending on the amount of body fat

good job for not letting my unhinged rant throw you off. your hair shading is pretty good, and the head is good in general, lineart and coloring wise

but the torso needs work, I think you practiced heads a lot but are just getting into torsos and below, that's what it seems like. maybe for next drawing try to exaggerate the curves a bit more

I'd still remove the weird bra that's under the bra, and also I wouldn't shade the mouth on the lip itself but just a little dash underneath it (or not at all)

the hand you revealed will look good if you make the fingers just hang loose like in this pic I attached

>>6686346
you're welcome. don't be too self critical, as long as you're drawing and doing stuff you're good, there's no endgame in art

I just tried to do perspective + construction drawings instead of perspective + observational drawing at the same angle, it's fucking mindbending

trying a rimjob pose, having some difficulty making the guy more 3D because of the girl's model overlapping him, it's a lot of stuff at once

not sure how to draw the box of his torso and pelvis at this angle

It looks like there is a wire in them to bend them in a certain way, and that is okay, but if you want it to feel more natural I would make them hang like they would naturally. Otherwise, if you want them to stand out more, you have to add more waves in there to indicate wind or something, but it doesn't really matter.

my formula:
draw a simple aggressive shape with clearly defined planes, place teeth and eyes where they look the most scary or expressive, emphasize and give detail to the form by designing bone plates/scale/loose skin/fur and shade it if you feel like it. works on all types of creature design. for loose reference/inspiration, I use japanese dragon designs like from jrpgs or yugioh, sharks, crocodiles and dinosaur illustrations. you can look at my daily practice on DAD. https://dad.gallery/users/4674 my twitter@ainarikia is exclusively anime and dead for now until I reach pro.

you're kinda right. I need to stop letting my frustration out on begs who're just trying their best. I just like talking shit. The question was genuine though. How are some people here so permastuck? Stagnation really scares me.

Thank you so much. Just wanted you to know I really like the dragon anon. I'm also kinda curious about doing DAD, so I think I'll check how it works and all. Good luck on your journey!
