Do you think it's a good idea?
For some context, I've been drawing ever since I discovered /ic/ two years ago, my progress has been so so, marginal (i can at least do a readable figure and construct most objects) due to study brain (only study, not finished pieces. I started working on comics a few months ago, i can make them more or less passable with heavy reference use using the instructions in Pic related book.

Now, i met an old acquaintance, who studies Illustration in my university (I'm a cs fag) obviously told her i now started practicing etc... And she invited me to join her drawing club, to share critique and all that

I accepted and, since I knew her kind of people were anime fans, i told her i was a bit busy and would join them in a future meeting.

I used this time to take one of the short stories I wrote (/lit/fag) and downloaded the OPM (always heard it has good art) and, with heavy reference use i managed to draw a so-so short story

And, even though it wasn't that good, when i showed it on the club the other day, i received quite a bit of praise, and well, I'm thinking of actually continuing making them (I'm still studying OPM) because, well, I'm starved for attention alright, after event i met three new people that actually talk to me

Yeah I know that sounds pathetic but I've been lonely for a long time he.

Would it be dishonest to keep making them even if I don't enjoy the medium? (Not in a disrespectful way, just not really interested)

I hope it was comprehensible

Why would you do something you don't like? This goes for anything.

There are many Otaku on my university and I'm lonely
If I get somewhat good at it i could become some sort of microceleb among them (?

You may come to enjoy it given enough time, but you also run the risk of just hating what you do more and more and now you're pidgeon-holed into being "that guy who does the mangas," which is going to be an issue if you aren't enjoying it to begin with. I ain't saying you should just be resigned to being lonely instead, but you really need to be honest with your own self as to whether you want to keep doing this.

>don't enjoy the medium
Why not? Do you not enjoy comics at all?
If you don't like manga at all it's probably because you only have a surface level understanding of the medium.
>inb4 weeaboo
I could say the exact same thing to a weeaboo who hates western comics because "it's all capeshit". There's a genre and story to be found for anyone in either eastern or western comics.

I'd say that if you actually liked making this comic then you should try to learn more about manga and comics in general.

Oh, and I should also say that you shouldn't just do it for attention. Do it for yourself. Fairweather friends will leave you just as quickly but a love for the art you do will be with you always.

I don't think i would hate it, I've had the idea of making comics for a while, the difference is that my original plan was to develop a style similar to the works in Bande Dessinee, but i will try manga style instead

>>6676091
Don't know, i suppose I prefer animation and stuff, i liked Akira and Ninja scroll back then

I hope my post doesn't make you think I'm a "tranime" spammer

The thing is that I'm a dirty anime-only

Hey I'm thinking purely in practical terms, "why not use the skill I've been trying to develop in order to meet people"
I'm a pragmarical type

>>6676099
Well if it turns out to be unbearable i would just stop it
Thanks for the advice
I will report back in the future depending on how it goes

I get where you’re coming from. I watched a ton of anime (more than most people here) but I’ve barely kept track of manga over the years. And it mostly has to do with finding a way to keep up with releases as easily as it is for anime. Like, I could be reading a series and a chapter doesn’t get a new update in months, sometimes years, and I forget to check back. But with anime there are tons of ways to know when something is out the moment it drops. And with anime it covers a lot more senses (music, pacing, voices) whereas manga does not. Although I’m making it an effort now to read more stuff lately I still haven’t really figured out a convent way to keep updated with chapters.

Then shouldn't you find other people who would instead appreciate you drawing in format more similar to Bande Dessinee?

Wait, you already liked anime and you draw?
Where's the conflict here, exactly?
I don't think the issue is you making manga when you don't/won't like manga, the issue is making something because you want to please others.

Finding people is hard anyway, i don't think it would be possible

>>6676195
Well yeah, i like the stories, but that doesn't mean I want to copy the style ahaha, i mean i like watching it but I'm still not sure about trying to Excell in a style that the average jap will always do better :p

NTA but I think the only current releases I keep up with are DanDaDan and Dungeon Meshi. Every once in a while I'll archive binge Sleepy Princess In Demon Castle. Other than that, I tend to read older releases.
The best way to keep track of releases is probably to use a mobile app like Tachiyomi, especially if you have a tablet, since it can notify you when new chapters drop.
I don't know about other apps, but you *can* use Tachiyomi to read manga from official servers that you pay a subscription for, not just for piracy.

A lot of manga I like took forever and a long time just to get 1 chapter translated. This went on for years and till this day I think 1 of my fav series still does not have all the chapters done even though it’s finished. It’s 1 of the things why I don’t bother. But then I always read comments from people saying stuff like “they censored/cut out this scene” then I flip through the manga for that anime and they for sure cut out and censor a lot of ecchi stuff it’s unreal.

I dunno, I’ll look more into finding out how I can track stuff better without it being too much of a chore.

Oh, I’ll look into Tachiyomi. Thanks.

If you don't enjoy it then manga is not for you. Don't make that mistake. There are better ways to make friends.

While I don't want to shit on you for wanting to make friends, this is not the way to do it. I highly suggest you look up "audience capture", you're in the beginning stages of it.

However, this doesn't mean you have to give up on your new club. Since you said "drawing club", I'm gonna assume it doesn't just focus on manga style. Don't be afraid to go western. If those people are indeed your friends, they'll understand.

Incidentally, I'd be interested in reading your short story; although you don't have to show anything if you don't want to.

you will never make a good manga without understanding and having a passion for the medium. it's not just drawing still frames in squares and it mandates its own workflow and study method to pump out at a decent pace. stop being a smelly incel and learn how to make friends
