If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I really wish there was an art book or a tutorial made by the North Korean propaganda artists. It would help to know what they do, the kind of brushes and ink they use, etc. But on the bright side none of this is terribly complicated. I may send a letter to the NK embassy asking them where I might be able to find NK art resources. Its worth a shot

It isn't that hard to understand, he's factoring the painting as a decision of what color goes in that lineart, if it's skin, it will be a hue that matches skin, but also playing along with the linework itself, meaning that it needs to be darker to outline the shape, which is what linework does mainly.
Inner lineart will remain softer/grayer because it blends better with the painted colors, with the exception of darker accents or where you want to depict the turning of the form.
Also, use your eyes, he's designing with the lines but also trying to make it play along with the painting, it's harder just because you have to keep tabs on those 2 elements at once in your process. Needless to say if your painting isnt working (which in reality is just your values not reading properly) your lines aren't gonna save it, they may even give away that you're fucking things up. You've got the option of practicing painting and lineart in isolated exercises and then testing both to measure your progress. Or do a study of these images, but in grayscale, focus on how the render works vs the lineart without the added noise of color yet as values are what really control this balance.
Also balance your line weight based on shadows/lights, typically you want them thinner at light, thicker in shadow, you can play with the values (within a same line or against other lines) for focusing contrast in some areas and reducing them where you don't want the eyes to look at, it also helps with the handmade feel.

he meant book as in prop for still life drawing: putting book at some angle on table and then just drawing what you see. Anyway almost all perspective books are the same since perspective is precise linear algebra math so it doesnt really matter much which you pick. Common picks are
goodreads.com/book/show/6760.Perspective_Made_Easy
goodreads.com/book/show/280794.Perspective_Drawing_Handbook
goodreads.com/book/show/27817875-framed-perspective-vol-1
goodreads.com/book/show/40222341-the-complete-guide-to-perspective-drawing
the last one is most hardcore, the first one is very casual but still good enough imho
>>6667496
in order to get gud you need to draw A LOT. So when you are following book your best bet is to copy it cover to cover + do whatever exercises. Some anons even say to copy it multiple times but i am not fan of that. Why copying 1 book three times when you can copy three books instead (and gain more insight) for the same amount of effort?

Jokes aside, a better way to practice people in perspective is making them into boxes, with three for the head, rib cage and pelvis. It also makes drawing boxes more fun, which is a godsend, cause they can get pretty boring.

Music was solved way before AI came about, meaning you could download apps that already give very listenable tracks just by pushing a few buttons (spotify is clogged with these just like pixiv/deviantart, etc... is clogged with AI slop) and yet people still compose music from scratch using their own chord progressions, melodies, etc.. these are better musicians than the hacks that use the former.

Hope this helps

had the idea to try painting an object like one of those 3D shaders that base the shading on the angle that the planes of the model are viewed at, can't remember what it was called- which is why there's lighting in weird places where it wouldn't be normally. I'm doing this so that I can try to develop my intuition for painting form from imagination without worrying about simulating actual lighting, an exercise sort of like drawing wireframes over drawn volumes I guess. help me /ic/, i'm in a crisis
i want to become a NSFW artist and start taking commissions, but the issue are:
- i like using outlines a lot as i'm used to pixel art, working with a limited palette and doodling
- i also like how painting/rendering allows me to make things look really soft
which leads to pic related where the boobs look good, but i have no idea how to tackle the nipples, hair, features, details like frills, etc. i don't want everything to look as simple and fleshy as the tits, but i don't wanna ruin them by adding more outline to them. any tips or recommendations for artists who pull off this combination?

Some progress was made.

I felt the need to incorporate the phrase I Forgive You into the piece,to turn the confusion into speculation over what's going on in the picture. I will have to conquer the roadway tiles next. A little calculation is required in this case to get the pattern right. The problem is resolving the angles between the figures and the projected other end of the roadway, and to make the tiles extend under the characters convincingly. And after that,a touch of ink here and there.

Thanks anon
I'd expand further but It's supposed to be
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity

God the father is on the right, representing YHWH and Judiasm, but is represented as a child because I had a closer connection to that religion when I was younger. He symbolizes the gift of talent as a young artist, and the limitless potential.

God the Holy Spirit is in the center, which truth be told, I still don't even fully understand but for me it symbolizes the "journey" of art. Typically represented as a dove in art. I drew the hands that way because to some degree one must have faith even in the face of uncertainty, or especially when one wants to give up or feel liek they're ngmi.

God the Son is on the left, as Christ, but I prefer not to show his face. For me, he represents not only personal sacrifice, but gratitude as well in the face of ones own limitations as a man.

Emerson said it the best in the essay "The Poet" which I think beautifully outlines the source of creativity and the artists role:
https://archive.vcu.edu/english/engweb/transcendentalism/authors/emerson/essays/poet.html

>For the Universe has three children,Note born at one time, which reappear, under different names, in every system of thought, whether they be called cause, operation, and effect; or, more poetically, Jove, Pluto, Neptune; or, theologically, the Father, the Spirit. and the Son; but which we will call here, the Knower, the Doer, and the Sayer. These stand respectively for the love of truth, for the love of good, and for the love of beauty. These three are equal. Each is that which he is essentially, so that he cannot be surmounted or analyzed, and each of these three has the power of the others latent in him, and his own patent.

Certainly! I have been mainly using the soft (semi textured) round brushes. I am now getting into using the good ol' square brush. I also have the 'comb' brush for finalizing rendering, and giving the painting look. Not only that, but I want to go with the lineless look. Kinda my first time going for something like this, But best belive I'll try to make it pop! Especially with the material texture, and post fx I will be doing

sorry just the wording on this post hurts my head
Try practicing looking at a real object and just draw the outline contour without looking at your paper. just practice hand eye coordination and you'll see the difference between drawing what you think something looks like, and the actual contour seen from your eye.

or you could just trace the outline on things like scissors to gain more familiarity of organic lines.

just i get the feeling youre labeling yourself beg too harshly, just draw, and dont worry about posting it on 4chan or anything. dont worry about drawing for fun rn, this hits more in the flow stage

Just a question, don't take it badly: Why, having the character sheet of this character, didn't you first try to study it? Like, breakdown the proportions, the shapes, etc? It's fine if you are doing a redesign on your own style, but if you post the sheets, you gotta at least do that.

IMO, this is a good example of a child's proportions, but in anime (they tend to have a bigger head). Loomis, if I remember my studies, put a child at 6 heads tall, so for a smaller, slender and stylized child, the proportions make sense.

There is a big learning curve to learn how to learn.

Try to learn by having fun, for instance download something of what you want to draw in the future and then draw cylinders over the limbs, a cube over the head in the right perspective etc.If it's an enviroment try finding the horizon line and vanishing points. And put what you learned to paper as soon as you learned it. And remember that it's okay to suck at the beginning, you will suck dick for a looong time.

As usual, the gel pen outline is worse than the pencil sketch. I'm hoping it will look good once I do the multicolor pen shading.
Probably not. I probably should do more drawing and less rendering, but I'm doing this as a hobby and I just want to do it this way.
Maybe it will turn out great. I doubt it, but one ban hope.
(I really shouldn't have done the armpit shadow outline in black.)

That's not an excuse mate, you are just holding yourself back with this mentality. If you want to do art as a hobby, then you should push yourself until you are at least having fun drawing and can say: hey, this looks pretty good. Until then, being a hobbyist isn't an excuse to not even try.

Going to do all of constructive anatomy from imagination(without looking at reference while drawing) after im done with complete. And then round out the year with loomis's figure drawing book.

>Accuses me of autism when he can't answer the question.
Why do I trigger this bad behavior in you? I'm really starting to suspect you have serious issues. I've put probably three hours into this today. You think I'm getting any less value than if I just did mass figures? Stop being such an asshole know it all. My progress in under a year while working a full time job speaks for itself. Whatever your issue are you can stop being rude to me. No one likes that behavior.
>mad at people when they don't like your art.
I get a decent about of positive feedback IRL. I'm not mad if someone doesn't like it. I'm just tired of the people who give bad, incorrect, and pointless advice rudely, and then when they are called out on it, they retcon it into "he didn't like the criticism."
You really believe that, follow your own advice. Take MY criticism of YOUR RUDE behavior to heart and stop taking like a fucking asshole. You're not right, and you're not helping.
There's far more people that don't like your attitude than don't like my posts.

most people irl will blow smoke up your ass unless they're other artists and you specifically ask for critique

this guy is right it would probably be better for you to mow through multiple drawings instead of toiling all day on a single one. of course good works take time but its good to just draw over and over when learning

think of it like doing sets at a gym if u draw a bunch of mini half-decent sketches eventually youll be able to do what you want no sweat

Then how will I learn multicolor pen shading? That was the question.
>would probably be better
Which means possibly would not be better.
>IRL will blow smoke
I know who's lying and I can tell the difference. I've even done shit ones to see if I get false praise.

Also the time to critique was >>6669250 here.
This is where and more importantly when I asked. I didn't ask for shit after it was inked, nor an assessment of how I should allocate my practice. I never acknowledged that this was the standard thinking.
My problem with him is the rudeness. My problem with (you) is like him, you aren't addressing the question. How do I get better at this technique of I don't put hours into it. This is a terminal goal not a incidental goal. It's intrinsically subjective and there's no arguing that it's what I want to do. The argument that massing figures will make me better at figures much less multicolor shading isn't a certainty. I've personally tried it and found that taking my time on a single piece had yielded dramatically better results for me, and seeing as I've already acknowledged that mass figures is the group think and that I'm the only one with access to excitemental data on what works for me, I'm going to say that on the subject of what is working more effectively for me, I'm the better informed individual here.
Cranking out progressively less shitty figures may have worked for (you). It may have worked for the majority of your class, but I can assure you it is a horribly inefficient waste of my time and effort.
You know what else is a waste of time and effort? Arguing with me after I already acknowledged the commonly held way of doing it and that out explained that I wasn't.

slow down on your studies. If you take less than 20 minutes on a study, you're doing it wrong. Make them detailed and accurate. This is the best way to learn form. Yes, you copy, to learn form. This didn't make sense to me until recently either, but it's the quickest way to improve.

I suggest copying through Jack Hamm or Bridgman.
