Why You Should Copy Anime:

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

/3/ fag here. I made a thread there to "find my artstyle and with the help of a guy, I went from left to right.
My current problem is I have no idea what to do to do the back (especially the back of the legs wich are way uglier thant the rest) muscles in the same art style. Same problem with the shapes, I had a massive problem in my legs for example and never realied it until it was pointed out.

Can someone help me figure it out?

Yes and also the shading he did. All the corrections he made by modifying them on my screenshot are now obvious to me. Didn't really need it for the upper body cause my version is off by choice, I kind of copied Araki's style of bodies. But for the legs, I always have a hard time with them and he made everything much more clear by drawing over the right part.

not really sure what you're asking for but if you want to understand the structure of those parts you can probably check an anatomy textbook like Bridgman or Anatomy for Sculptors. i know for sure Bridgman has a part about the back of the knee.
if you're working in 3d, style and shading are texture or engine things right? or do you mean the stylized anatomy?

Stupid question but if you can draw anime like a semi pro, is it hard for these people to switch up styles lets say to paint something in a realism? I don't want to be "stuck" to just drawing one style forever if that makes sense. But I guess once you can draw a human figure you can draw everything right?

Exactly the problem i'm facing right now. You hit a wall at a certain point if you lack the fundamentals and want to improve beyond what you're capable of doing. Of course i'm not saying you should autistically construct everything and then end up with stiff work but you should be balancing both studying and constantly applying what you learn to every personal piece from then on, and it will improve over time.

That's a decent schedule to have, the weekly one. I've always felt that I was quicker to understand language and other logical subjects. Art really messes with my brain, I keep trying to create and fall back on a hard set of rules when drawing and it fucks me over when something doesn't conform to my mental constructs and I have to grind and grind to discover a new method which I then fall back on for things and the cycle keeps going. Is this how it is supposed to be? >>6661141
you don't want to rely on rules. the less construction and rules and such the better. Your goal should be to produce an entire drawing without using any guidelines at all. winging it is a good thing!

I think soul is something you have to naturally, intrinsically want. If you don't personally care for it, i don't think there's any hope of you getting it. "Feeling" comes because you see something cool or super cute or whatever that you can do. You won't be able to feel anything unless you actually have passions for those things, like "I personally really love cute things" or "I really like mysterious things", and so while you go for that feeling, typically by getting an idea of something good to do while you draw, and from influence by good art of the thing you love and want to capture.

note that, artists who have depression find themselves unable to draw properly for this very reason, because while depressed they lose their passion, and overall don't have any strong feelings about things (good feelings are kind of muted). I and a friend of mind have personally experienced this inability to draw while depressed; and when the depression went away, my ability came back somewhat, although not quite the same. hope this informs.

>> No.6661180

>>6661163
Oh, in this case I have it backwards. I never had passion towards anything and felt apathetic towards life in general. Because I never felt strongly about anything I figured I would try to pick up a lifelong hobby to at least force myself to become good at something over letting myself waste away.

I treat my art like a mechanical exercise similar to crosswords or sudoku. I don't know what is wrong with me. It's not like I'm depressed or anything.

>> No.6661186

>>6661180
oh, there is probably 0 hope for u having soul then. it comes from passion, childlike chasing of charm. If you don't have passions, I can't really help you too much. some people are like you, and they are able to draw quite well, just... they tend to be more on the fundies side of things, a lot more technical and rigorous. Personally, I don't understand how people like you can stand drawing, I'd be so bored if I wasn't drawing cute boys/girls. you're probably fine though, ur just naturally like that.

You're at a stage where you should be doing a lot of construction underneath first to learn where to put features. Study this stuff in order, look up videos and books for each topic and don't really move on to the next step until you get the hang of each one to a degree. It helps to have an artist in mind that you like to use as reference and to focus. Have an end goal in mind of what you'd like to accomplish.

You can't deny your soul's earnest wishes like that. I did the same thing with another activity.
Quit learning a language (Japanese) because I fucking sucked at it. But even years later, I kinda regret not having at least tried to commit for longer.
Because you WILL get better. But I was a nihilist like you, saying "Oh, at least now I have more time for other things! LOL"

help me /ic/, i'm in a crisis
i want to become a NSFW artist and start taking commissions, but the issue are:
- i like using outlines a lot as i'm used to pixel art, working with a limited palette and doodling
- i also like how painting/rendering allows me to make things look really soft
which leads to pic related where the boobs look good, but i have no idea how to tackle the nipples, hair, features, details like frills, etc. i don't want everything to look as simple and fleshy as the tits, but i don't wanna ruin them by adding more outline to them. any tips or recommendations for artists who pull off this combination?

I think your art is great but you're used to working on very small DPI canvas, gotta try to adjust to 300DPI with canvas that's 2k res

To me 'softness' is a good quality in coloring, but you should try to keep your lineart sharp, so if you like softness try that. keep your signature style in shading and coloring but sharpen the lineart, it won't look so low res then

You can use ball method. I tried to illustrate how to rotate the ball (which is something I struggled with when I started) so that you have a good base to start with. I suggest that when you start learning, you stick to simple angles and try not to draw diagonally (see how i fixed the vertical angle in the 3rd part). This will make it harder if your brain is not accustomed to drawing sideways. On the last part, I tried to do single strokes so you can see what big shapes you can focus on when doing the details. The likeness isnt 100% but you should get the general idea. keep practicing

After reflecting on myself for the past week I came to realise there isn't anything I actually want to draw. It was an interesting exercise for the past 2 years going from nodraw to /beg/, I feel like I can see the world in new ways and noticed I'm more attentive to visual detail in my daily life. But I'm a consoomer through and through, I'm fine just enjoying other people's works. If anything these 2 years have weaned me off degen coom arts which was a problem for me when I was a teen, thanks to switching to analysing enough pictures instead of fapping to them.

I guess I will keep practicing with whatever free time I have but art will probably drop in priority for me and I don't need to "make it" anymore. It was a decent pasttime and despite all the negativity here I kind of enjoyed it.

If you are looking to get into a more painterly and less illustrative style you need to do some painting studies. I would try to paint from references of the things you want to draw before tackling it in the drawing you are working on. If you really want to see improvement don't sketch the references first just start with the colour.

Critique your own piece or take critique from this thread and then fix it up based on that critique. I am sure you can see some of the issues in your piece already.

I would fix up that face for sure it is super amateur looking. It is entirely flat and the face does nothing for the attractiveness of her. Do a second pass on the face for sure at the bare minimum.

Also please for the love of god reference a bunny suit. Those ears collar and bowtie are obviously not referenced and you don't know how to draw them so it brings down the piece.

May I ask for some advice for pic related? I'm trying to do a dirty bathroom/shower background for my anime character but it looks terrible. I've just put a stock texture of concrete over a shitty grid but it don't look good

there are literally no tutorials on youtube for backgrounds, is drawing backgrounds some secret knowledge only architects and Asians have?

>>6671174
I think it's very good
The eyes are super well done and grab attention which is great because they deserve it
the nose looks good at first glance, but maybe it's a little bit too low? I may be wrong
anatomy looks correct, the pose is not very dynamic so that may be the next 'step up' for your drawing style since you seem to have it nailed
hair is basic, it works, but i'm not sure you followed the 'flow of hair' or took note of the hairline because if the hair is gathered into the buns then there'd be lines going towards them, no?
hope that helps, overall the drawing is very good
>>6671252
the eyelash you drew is just 1 flat line, make the eyelash more dynamic, eyes draw attention of all drawings so make them the centerpiece
make hair into fatter strands and clumps, not just this staircase pattern
desu your body is super well drawn, you just need to stick a well drawn head on top of it
literally cut out an anime head and stick it on this body and you'll see that
>>6671278
no, you'll improve a lot just by doing and comparing your drawing parts (like eyes or hair or shading) to other drawings you like

that's how you will improve the most, you won't find one "hot tip" that makes you into a good artist

Tracing over a drawing is one of the steps to do copies, but don't do it mindlessly. You're supposed to break down what you're copying and then challenge yourself to replicate it afterwards. Redline, use it to note lines, proportions and placement, and then draw a duplicate next to it without the guideline. Keep repeating until you achieve your desired likeness, and then draw something from imagination using what you learned.

relax, my bro, just the fact of you drawing things means you are improving even if you dont notice it

this will help you a lot with picking colors:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuSdcMmu4c8
also watch his face tutorials, where he maps it

but as for colors, in a nutshell, don't just 'move darker' on the color panel to pick a color, adjust both the hue AND the brightness a little bit and pick a few shades.

also don't color stuff like skin against pure white background cuz it'll always look awkward

1 unit is the distance from the midline to the start of the hairline.
>This unit is determined by the size of your circle, place it slightly above the midway point. OR 2/3 of the way up the from the midline to the top of the circle.

There are many routes. to get started you should post a couple of drawings for free first to explore what tags you like drawing and what brings the most eyes

There's the twitter + youtube route which I don't know about

there's patreon which you should have if you won't break its TOS

finally there's Pixiv which is what I went for. Pixiv has a thing for commissions called Booth, it has a patreon-like subscription site called Fanbox, it's pretty integrated. post a couple good fanarts and put alternate versions of them on Fanbox (or Patreon). people will click to see your nice drawing, and a small subset of them may pay to get the extra versions

have a picture with what your commission and pricing looks like and always link it in your descriptions, people who like your art will reach out

I don't do commissions and people reach out to me to do them anyway, but I decline because I'm insecure (I'm Stillwater on pixiv, but guro warning if you look me up)

also there's a site called ko-fi which lets people donate to you via paypal, you can make an account, they dont take a fee, always good to link it under your works

hope that helps and good luck anon

Don't fret, the face is the hardest part. You have to practice the Loomis method a bit and use skull references to get a grasp on the structure. Then you compare your heads to the heads of good artists that you like and go from there

no worries man. i forgot to mention that booth is for selling completed sets, like a few page manga story, you can put them out for sale as one time purchases

pixiv 'requests' is another feature for commissions, separate from booth, you specify a dollar amount and people can request a commission

and pixiv fanbox is basically patreon

You started incorrectly which is why it doesnt look right. Start in this order. Main big circle, forehead subcircles, then use those to figure out the nose, section and then chin.
To show you its possible, i overlaid and repositioned your image + some warp to get it to line up. Like i said, you wont need this always but once it sticks in your head, you'll hopefully be able to get straight to drawing without having to do all of subdrawings.

Should I stop drawing on a non screen tablet and just use paper and pencil? I feel like whenever I want to start drawing again and copy something like an anime drawing I usually end up with shittier drawings on a tablet than on paper. I've just been insisting on drawing on a tablet for some time.

You could do both as well, but whatever fits your own learning style

>> No.6675635

>>6675405
I would argue the sooner you get used to the tablet the better so you should take the time to get comfortable with it. But if it's eating up your productivity, maybe stick to paper for drawing and just scan or take a pic of your work after to do some coloring digitally.
