If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Heavy pressure can make it a bit darker but 4B can't go very dark, you'll need a higher grade like 6B or 8B. Varies a bit between barnds too. Graphite in general isn't that dark. If you want something darker than that, there are graphite-carbon pencils like the Mars Lumograph black.

what you should do is thinking 3 dimensionally. take for example an egg and draw eyes on it. You can see how the eyes get distorted depending on the way you turn it.

Like Loomis you have to be cautious that you are drawing a sphere, so the lines on the sphere get curved if the sphere turns

well m8, there are a lot of ways but making a clean. proportioned 3d construction is a classic. You can also eyeball stuff, focus on the lines in the image, build up the face from values... lots of ways, if you really don't feel like banging your head on construction you'd need to find the way that suits you best for portraits.

My workflow for simple portraits is usually
- Quickly trace the image and get an idea of the main proportions (distance between each element idk)
- Make a construction for the shape of the face
- Eyeball nose, eyes, mouth

NTA, if you a studying head construction, trace the construction model on your reference and try to do the same without tracing on the side.

Go to sketchfab.com and find a simple 3d model, you see it, and try to draw it on a different view, and check later. It's more fun, imo, than doing 250 boxes.

This project is pencil sketch->thin gel pen outline->colored ballpoint. I went overboard on the pencil sketch. The paper is watercolor and it's probably too toothy for ballpoint, but I'm learning and experimenting.
I posted an earlier iteration in the coom source thread and was told I did a better job on the horse than the girl, so I corrected a few lines on her (and promptly fucked them up on the thin outline.)
I'm going to wait until the second color layer is done before I try to erase the pencil. It will probably not come clean, but as I said, it's a learning experience.

This is a dumb mindset. If you're struggling with advanced concepts with any skill, you know you're not only getting somewhere but you're above the level of a newb. The struggle right as you begin is the worst because you know you're utterly shit and the only way forward is grinding past it. Can anyone help me with side planes of the head and eye socket placement? Picrel is example of what my issue is. I've been through Loomis, Huston, and currently working on Hampton, and none have really clarified it.

Okay, so in both examples, I've got the basic sphere of the head drawn and the "T" of the face in the perspective I want the head.

On the left, I've drawn the side plane such that it appears proportional with the T of the face and is in the correct perspective. However after drawing the keystone and eye sockets, I can already tell the closest eye socket is WAY too fucking wide.

On the right, I have tried to "correct" this by widening out the side plane of the head. The side plane now looks "wrong" to me. The eye socket now looks to be the correct size, however I can already tell that if I finish the face, the facial features will all be smooshed way too far over on the side of the head, and the face itself will seem too small and completely out of alignment with the rest of the head.

How do I reconcile this? What am I missing or misunderstanding here?

The side plane is as big or as small as you want it to be. If the side plane is bigger, then you're seeing the head from the side more. If the side plane is smaller, then you're seeing the head from the front more. It's a matter of camera positioning.

Don't overthink this perspective stuff so much. If you wanna get good at head drawing, first, learn to draw the skull from imagination, from any angle. I recommend getting a physical model of an anatomical skull from amazon. Second, you should download a thousand images from your favorite artist's twitter, and copy all 1000 of their drawings. Make careful, exacting copies, and you'll get a "feel" for how to construct a head, just like that.

The Loomis method doesn't work theoretically. It's not a math formula that you have to master. It's a language you have to learn. You don't learn languages by constructing grammar points and stuff, you learn languages by reading books and getting comprehensible input.

If your problem is your face ends smooshed or stretched out, with stuff misplaced, studying from photos will allow you to practice accurate placement and proportions, rather than just relying on your construction being correct. Construction is a shortcut, so if you're having problems constructing, maybe just cut the middleman and go back to the source?

This was my first time trying colored ballpoint over pencil. I went overboard on the pencil and had to erase a lot. I use pilot neox hb 0.5 which comes out on the darker side. I completely erased it and that may have not been an ideal choice.
>hands flat
The hands are going to suck for a while, boss. As it is I erased them at least six times. It's a practice issue and I'm gong to have to do more. This is my compromise. I try to have visible hands in every subject so I get at least some practice.
I will take the root of your criticism and try to maintain contour in future projects. The style of colored ballpoint isn't based on contour lines (pic), but I'll figure out how to make it work. Obviously the guy who made the video on it does photo realistic drawings so it's possible to do right.
Is just going to take a lot of tries, I suspect.

i havent gotten to color at all myself but looking at your values you should consider the possibility of combining them or layering them. Experiment with what will happen if you first add on paper gray or black pencil then add on top yellow. Not all colors have access for full value scale and that can be very problematic so you need to compensate for it somehow.

tldr dont think in yes/NO terms when it comes to colors. Find a way to blend and or mix them to create nice stuff.

Stop using this language. There are paid shills who use this way of speaking to further their agenda. This is a known fact. By aping their idiom you legitimize their tactics and lower discourse to that level.
It is a matter of record that ai chat bots and government agents frequent these boards. It is ignorant and disingenuous to pretend otherwise.
But beyond that, there are many anons who respond to things inappropriately and without fully reading or understanding what they are responding to. If you behave that way and are accused of being fake, instead of escalating the belligerence, you should lead by example by taking the criticism constructively and correcting your own behavior.
Together we can prevent another Buffalo.

Pick an easier and simpler subject to practice from, you're setting yourself up for failure with things with dark local color and with an ambiguous contour that either demands a very trained eye for light and shadows and shape language to be understood, but in the long run it doesn't matter because the angle and subject is rather dull and not recommended for a /beg/. In the case you wanna go hard on contours try drawing for example something like white/gray sneakers or a power drill in various angles, they have enough information for you to filter or to describe from (which means doing various iterations, so you can apply different approaches in terms of linework and compare which one reads better, in this case just try to focus on describing different areas in each version so the exercise provides better feedback), or if you want to gauge your skill, draw something as simple as an apple or a banana, that should look interesting without spending too many lines on it and will directly benefit from working with more complex subjects.
If you've heard about straights ( / ) s lines (literally s) and curves (c) that's generally the way to go about describing contours and inner (implied) shapes, if you can gather anything from the "shit flinging" is that your drawing needs to read better, so try something like that and see if it helps. Things like values can be added, though minimally (this gets into understanding planes and construction, so it can easily get more complex), in general any kind of practice can be isolated so you don't spend more time that you have to from exercises like this, a basic understanding of form and planes and how they turn in space would benefit you for the time being, also watch this:

>a basic understanding of form and planes and how they turn in space would benefit you for the time being
You need to understand perspective to a basic degree to jump into constructing anything. From what I see anon can visualize things in space, what is getting in the way is the overload of information and that having too many things/choices to practice, which in turn dilutes your efforts, construction is just one of them, but if you want to have something look like a drawing and not just nice cubes or planes sitting in a white canvas you need to aim a little further than that.
There's a common tendency of thinking if you jump into details right from the get go you will have as a result a more refined piece, when in reality dialing back to fundamentals will hold everything together making the details just the cherry on top, the video directly addresses this by suggesting in the very first stage to learn perspective while evolving from constructing basic forms into real objects with clear steps, and it certainly is more of a roadmap about learning to draw than being a video on a specific subject, say, something like what Marco Bucci does with his 10 minutes for a better painting videos, which are clearly useful, but first and foremost you need to have some sort of direction/mindset before even jumping into drawing/painting, even for cubes, otherwise all you will have is endless pages of exercises and your brain still won't make the leap into how to integrate this into an actual drawing, this is especially important if you're gunning for adopting a reliable process for creating your pieces, which I assume is the majority of artists in here.
If you want a course that applies all of this in a nice package, try Will Weston drawing for composition course, he goes in depth into explaining this while giving you assignments. Here's another useful video on drawing with basic shapes:

If your brain is on and you're thinking about the shapes you're copying and why, then yes. But it might be slower progress than if you stuck with simpler pieces until your skill is higher.

A good rule of thumb is how well do you think you could repeat the drawing from memory after the fact? If you think you'd be at a total loss, it's probably too complex a subject.

Both these characters have somewhat similar design in that respect, yet I utterly fucked it up the last time. Why that happened was I did not sketch or pose her beforehand, didn't plan at all. Went in details first, and all I could see was the details. Completely backwards.
I hope the haters (that I apparently now have lmao) can see how uninitiated I am. I really have zero technique, only autism.
