IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:

>1. screenshot the image and post that instead

>2. change camera capture settings to something smaller

>3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

3rd day streak of posting art. Did more gesture drawings for practice. I did a layer of crayola, then a layer of poster paint then scratched my son's monster he draws on the paint. It didn't turn out as well as I'd like, but something about this character I feel would make a good print. With a little more experimentation.

Maybe the same technique but smaller on sticker paper? Then cut them out into circular stickers. Maybe the background color should also be vertical to emulate the coloring on the original.

I also used too little water when stretching the paper and didn't know the right angle trick for pulling off the tape.

The figure and the objects in the background are drawn at different perspectives. The buildings and the car are drawn as if the viewer's eyeline is at ground level, but the figure is drawn as if the viewer is looking upward.

You do not understand because you clearly don't understand what a vanishing point is. How can you claim to understand when you don't understand the words being used?
Here is an example:
The road, trees, fence, etc. are all in the same plane(s) and share a vanishing point because of this. All horizontal vanishing points will be on the horizon line, which is always at the same elevation as eye level of the viewer. The lines making up the top and bottom of these objects will converge at the vanishing point. Note that for anything other than a plain box, the top and bottom plane are often just conceptual. Additionally, in the example picture, the artist chose to only give one horizontal vanishing point for these objects, the second set of lines making up the top and bottom plane are perfectly parallel, where instead they could converge at a secondary horizontal vanishing point.

But your example only works because the viewer and everything on the image except for the mountains are parallel and aligned orderly.
Now what if there were three different roads, all branching out to different directions?
And what if those roads aren't straight but rather curvy?
And what if those trees and houses aren't all parallel to each other on those roads?

What will you do then, huh?

Each set of things that are aligned will have their own vanishing points. You would mark (or if they wouldn't lie on the page, visualize) the points seperately and apply the same concept. It's not a new problem, it's the same problem multiple times within one piece.
For organic shapes, it helps to break them down into simpler forms. Starting with a box that is just exactly big enough to fit the object in question. For something like a cylinder, if you make such a box, if you draw a circle just as wide and tall in the front and back plane, and connect them according to the vanishing point, you'll have a cylinder in perspective.
All these things take practice, however. Rather than worry about edge and complicated cases, it would be more productive to design your work to just incorporate simple cases until you are comfortable with them. Once you are, you can start doing slightly more complicated cases.
This is how education works. You do not give calculus lessons to children, you start them off by teaching them incredibly basic shit like what the natural numbers are, and then move on to slightly less simple concepts like addition and subtraction.

Forgot my visual aid for the cylinder example. One anon here already reccomended drawabox. I will also reccomend them with the caveat that since your goal ought to be spacial reasoning, you do not need to heed the teacher's autism about what materials to use, or bother with the lessons on mark making (for now). Drawing boxes in perspective and drawing ellipses on planes in perspective would benefit you though.

Pencil sketch for hatching exercise. Going to try gel pens but doing a kind of Frank Cho thing.
I won't work on it again until at least tomorrow after work. Let me know if there's anything I'm missing or need to fix. I was going to outline it with black ink then make a fine offset grid with a light orange and then work up to darker colors freehand.
I'm also going to try monochrome ballpoint later. I know you're not supposed to use gel pens for this, but I'm going to try it anyway. I did a couple of rough ones and they seemed to work okay.

Hello beg. Monk descending down to his certain demise!

>>6633752
i will give you the biggest redpill on all these art courses: it is incredibly hard to make a living from pictures. Over saturated market, every other beg draws and such. And so many people who draw decide to focus on teaching others. Proko and his kind will keep re-releasing the same old concepts ad infinity, ideally every year to milk whatever audience there is. I mean there are art books from 19th century and they teach exactly same stuff as proko. For example look at >>6633062 that is technique from bargue drawing course released at 1875 and it is just describing method art schools were teaching since like 16th century. And anons look at it in 2023 and praise krenz like he invented it. I dont hate them, everybody has to earn their bread somehow. But be aware whatever they are selling can be found elsewhere for free.

It's that the facial features are not properly aligned with the heads. It makes the skulls look super huge.
There are some problems besides the heads. If the blue figure is laying on top of the red figure, then the breasts should be pressed against her back. If blue is straddling red, then her butt should be higher to accommodate red's hip, and blue's butt wouldn't be that visible in this pose. The easy solution would be to hide blue's body behind red. Otherwise, you're looking at reworking the pose.

I find it hard to see a future in which it's ever practical or economical to try automating mural painting. Sure, there are faux mural prints that can be done, but while niche there is still demand for actual mural painting.

Pawell what the FUCK is happening with those values and drapery
Top of monk bro's head is too close to the top of the frame, I'd extend the canvas a tiny bit so there's a wee bit more space for the lad.
His feet are different sizes, despite being in the same location and not extreme perspective, as well as the ground weirdly curving under neath him. For a stone stairway, this seems highly unlikely that the stairs are this fucked unless it was made by goblins.
You wrote down cobwebs which you could've added with a small brush texture brush (like a pencil one) and lightly drawing in white glistening in the corners and the walls to lead the eye around the figure and through the composition but failed to do so.
The drapery you keep building using these parallel shapes when you really should use more tapered, triangular ones to showcase the direction in a more appealing way, and you have no sense of how the dark values should be grouped together on one side instead of haphazardly thrown around on the body.
Also, his shoulders, neck and the perspective of the bricks painted on the wall is wrong.
Head's decent though.

It's a philosophical question. There's never a bad time to do drawings from imagination, but if you're a complete beginner you don't know how to draw anything, which is why you should spend the VAST majority of your time drawing from reference until you're more confident with drawing things accurately.
When you can consistently copy reference images and have a solid understanding of perspective/construction you generally should break from your comfort zone and make full images of things from memory. You can then see what you struggle with most and practice that, repeat ad infinitum.

If you want an example of what happens when you never draw from imagination just look at Proko.

I eased into it by doing cafe sketches. You sit in a coffee shop, and sketch. Since it's rude to stare, you just glance at someone, then draw what you remember. You force yourself to construct the person, from basic forms, to anatomy, to clothes.

Construction is the key to drawing from imagination, but don't overthink it. Morpho: Simplified Forms, is all you need for construction, then you just adapt the shapes to every body part by stretching and squashing it

sorry. I had a whole 2 paragraphs typed up, but I just gave up and deleted it and wrote that. I may have skipped a few steps. My point is, the proportions of your figure need work, and that's the thing you're supposed to be truly studying when you do figure drawing. It doesn't matter if my redline wasn't photographically exact to your reference. I tried to correct the widths and thickness of the parts. Doesn't matter if the pose isn't the same. I suggest that this be your goal when studying too. The most important part to learn are the three dimensional parts of the figure. The more fluent you get at drawing, the more easily this comes.

Atelier folk, on the other hand, spend hours and hours copying the figure, because all they care about is the optical duplication of what they see. If you're "just" trying to practice accuracy, then you need to spend a lot more time, to achieve this photographic duplication. BUT, if your goal is to draw from imagination, which I assume it is, learning the 3d forms of the body is more important.

I don't know, I could talk about drawing for days and days. Let me know if you have more questions. Don't just write me off as schizoid, just because you don't get it.

Anyways in attempt to pre empt what I think is likely to be your response before I go to sleep, I am practicing the way I am right now because there's endless amount of conflicting information about art online, and I am still trying to figure out what works best for me. For a quick example, David Finch says this about gesture
>The point is to get comfortable with quickly drawing in your basic shapes in a variety of poses
Which to me implies trying to construct the model using basic shapes, and specifies I should be drawing from reference. Proko is the other guy I have watched a video on gesture from, and iirc he specifically talks about avoiding specific countours and more or less making a stick figure starting with the line of action, and noting maybe noting some landmarks. These are not at all the same conception of gesture, and your opinions are just another conflicting opinion on the "correct" way to practice.
