Sketching is fun depending on my mood. If I'm simply doodling shit for my own enjoyment, it's probably the most fun part of the process. But if I'm sketching something that I know I'm gonna have to eventually publish or show somebody I accidentally get put into this perfectionist mindset and I want to kys.
Line art is boring no matter what it is though. Just feels like glorified tracing the thing I've already drawn most of the time.

It might just be me being lazy in completing stuff for years, but I have a specific curve on this graph. I start on the top extremely motivated and bouncing ideas in the sketch because there's so much potential. The explosion of lines doesn't make the mistakes so apparent. Then when I get to lineart I nosedive in motivation because I keep having to retrace and undo cause my markmaking leaves things to be desired. Then I get to coloring and I either find a way to polish it to the end, or get so annoyed not knowing how to render it I completely abandon the piece.
Need more practice.

That's why you get an in demand degree but also create art on the side. When I first got someone willing to pay for my artwork I never expected that to happen. Fadt forwards 5 years later I am cursing my boss for asking me to come in on weekends while I have 5-6 commissions a week and is about considering make art full-time.

Just dont put all your eggs in one basket is all. I view my art side hustle as an alternative if I've decided my main job is too much bullshit for the pay it gives me.

Yeah same with me. Though sketches are more time consuming because sometimes I'd only notice things are off after 1-2 hours. Lineart is always boring once you've got the completed sketch going. But on the plus side, I like coloring so whenever a lineart and base color is done there's a dopamine rush because I now can move on to the phase I like.

Have you guys personally seen anyone working in the production art industry that isn't self employed actually make anything themselves actually good?
This is why the best route is to get a job in something OTHER than art you find interesting, and then you can use your daily experiences from your job as reference for your visual library and stories.
It has to be a field you actually find cool though, it can't be coping pretending you like it or else you'll just not want to think about anything relating to that. I like IT stuff. I like autistically optimizing things, learning what things do, and learning about new hardware. I also did warehousing for years before that though and absolutely never want to draw a fucking forklift ever because the thought just pisses me off
