I had an animation question if anyone here can answer it for me:
So I'm planning on doing a short Spidey animation just to practice dynamic perspective and camera movement, and I was wondering if I should start with the figure itself or if I should start by mapping out the environment and the camera angles the figure will be moving through instead
I'm just starting to learn how to use perspective grids but starting a more complex animation like that is where I'm sort of stuck

i do think its a little quick. the posing is good, but its a matter of too much at once on the pose where he gets on his knees. you dont need that second anticipation, unless hes getting up very slowly or moving very little before this. the timing and posing is good except for that little bit i think

doodle to hopefully help illustrate what i mean. your strong posing already anticipates the next movement, you just need to trim the fat in the middle.

following up on this >>6591034 anons advice, the fall looks crunchy because the animation is at 12fps (or less) while the camera move is at 24/25 fps. in most western tv animation, when theres a big camera move like this, they animate at a higher framerate until the camera move is over, then they swicth back to 12fps. animate at a higher framerate here, or make the camera move a lower framerate to match (this might be kind of nauseating though, animating more frames is generally the better option)

a small thing that will help sell your character is sliding along the ground is actually drawing the ground plane with a perspective grid on it, or some texture/ rough features, so he actually has an environment to slide over. it isnt sold as well if hes in the void. making a character feel part of the environment and not a floating bit of decoration is a skill too

I'm really happy with the yell, and the drawn frames of the breathing at the end, but it feels too rushed. I ran through the inital breathing part, so that needs work. An undiciplined impatience on my part. Other than that, does it seem too rushed overall? Should I have given each stage more time

I think it's more like making the "invisible ink" moves because i would like an animation over other with a moving background, and both animations have some moving holes that show the background, but upper animation wont show lower one, only background (picrel). Hence the need to put the "erasing form" between the two animations and moving along the upper one (to hide the lower only when the upper passes by a part of it). But what you said is also useful it would get this pendulum one right, thanks.

Gimp has tablet support, you just have to enable the tablet in edit->input devices then turn on dynamics for the brush you're using. I have no clue why tablets aren't enabled by default.
I think there's animation plugins that add onion layers, might also be a plugin gives you an easier alternative to the layers problem. Not trying to shill gimp (I'm a kritard myself) but there's always other options to explore.

So anon, the reason the other anons said this looked uncanny and not that good, I'd say would come down to 70% timing.

Your art is still /beg/ level, but you could make this alot better without changing your drawing skills yet.

Her arm moving up and brushing her hair is all done on 1's I imagine, only moving the arm a hair each frame. This does make it "smoother" but not life like. determine the speed at which she brushes her hair.

Maybe at the start she has a 5 frames raising her arms, 2-3 frames of her brushing it, and 4-5 of her arm returning. (just throwing out numbers) it may look less smooth, but it will be much less uncanny.

Wrapping it up, basically, the best animation isn't where you draw things 1 frame at a time, only moving it a hair, but understanding the timing and spacing. And figuring out where the frames you need to draw are.

Look up some videos on animation timing and spacing, they'll explain it better than I can

I'd say your basic steps are:

>study basic film language and shots. closeup, medium, wide, high and low angles. also study camera moves (dont be afraid to move the camera around). how they affect a scene, etc. this is really simple day 1 film school stuff https://www.seenit.io/blog/6-basic-camera-movements-and-why-they-matter/
>study sequences you really like from movies, shows, whatever. SEQUENCES, not just individual shots
>just draw

the big thing to remember: your storyboard isnt a comic book, a series of drawings, or a sketch. its your FILM. its just in its simplest form, but its still a film. someone should watch your boards and get basically the same emotional impact as the final film- if they dont, scrap parts and fix. thinking of your storyboard as a film already will put you in a better headspace for boarding interesting shots and improve your boards. when people think of them as a series of drawings things can get boring and static

if your film language is good already and you want to learn technicals, especially in line with tv animation general standards, heres a couple handy resources. these are just to make your storyboard shorthand cleaner for TV production and might be helpful

and make sure you look at richard williams animators guide, some storyboard artists these days are basically keyframe animators and having some animation skill helps a lot with timing and strong posing

apart from that, fundies is the way. hope this helps

Is Macromedia flash 8 viable to use in 2023? Its pretty nostalgic and comfy.

a lot of programs are based on flash, and the tools are mostly the same across platforms, so yeah for sure. it has annoying quirks but its viable

Does anyone know where I can find an example of a hand drawn animation done at 60 fps? I'm not looking for something done at 24 or 30 and then upscale with AI or something, but rather something actually drawn for 60 fps. I understand completely that 60 fps is probably not good for hand drawn animation, I'm just really curious to see what it looks like. I've tried googling but I just get a bunch of results about AI upscaling.

Bullshit question, but im a student, and I'm going to Japan. I meant for it to be a study abroad, but the program cancelled, leaving me with a weeklong trip to Japan i'm stuck with. Is there anything animation/art related I should consider exploring if given the chance? I'd love to make connections there, or at least get to know people in that field, but don't know where to start.

I really like it,kinda gives me “Lenore:The cute little dead girl” vibes but with more action, something tells me you’re efforting too much tho? I cant really explain it…other than that, very good job bro! Keep it up!

some people get stuck with arthritis or ibs so I'd say you're coming out on top
I've heard some publishers do scheduled tours for fans, and you can meet whatever random mangaka might be there at the time. Could be bs, I've never fact checked it. If true, some animation studios might do the same.

What percentage of the budget in an ok-animated anime (not sakuga but not trash) usually goes for the animation?
I can't find any reliable info on google or maybe I'm not looking well enough. But I'm really curious.

>> No.6619980

>>6619951
If you listen to small studios talks, it's about 99% of money left from deducting studio maintenance costs. Budgets there are really small and barely cover those really small wages of animators.

Wow, thank you for the reference!!!
This is exactly the type of stuff I love, strange I never seen it before!

I agree, I've made a few over-the-top attempts at my animation, I wanted to make things dynamic, and gone overboard by both how fun it was, and to experiment with how far can I push background animation.

I think it was a successful attempt, I learned new ways to animate in that video, glad I pushed it, but it's funny how you managed to feel it through!

What are some non animation related courses or books I should try to improve my drawing skills/fundamentals for animation?

I've been doing Brent Eviston's "art and science of drawing" course to impove on my fundamentals and it's great. But I don't think doing stuff like measuring proportions with my pencil is going to help me with my animation drawings.
Also for context I'm not a total beg

I used Opentoonz for a little bit, and the one thing that bothers me is the UI. Some of it is annoying, in certain regards. Does anyone have tips on reorganizing the OpenToonz workspace, and tips in general?
