i am at a standstill boys, been posting art weekly to my art account the past 5 years, it got to 160 followers and never got further, 3 years ago i decided to make a fandom account and tried getting some fandom recognition, posting daily and post stuff that gets attention like character art and memes, 176 followers and now at a standstill, the past 4 months ive been trying to get commissions (though those have been open since 2019) as well as attention through my fetish art, but same story, have 0 followers on my fetish twitter account.
so anyone have any secrets youre holding out for a guy trying to make money off art? left is a piece of fanart i recently made

OP there's a "rule" in the animation world about appealing art, it's 1 of 12 rules, they're actually principles.

It's called:

>APPEAL

Honestly?
Your art is unappealing as fuck. It's not exactly ugly, and appeal doesn't mean cute either in animation terms, but there's no magnetism to your art.
The proportions are weird, the noses are yucks, the body lines are too angular and simple, that female parrot is cute, while her human version is a "La Criatura" levels of ugly.

Here's a great tip:

>Choose a niche or target audience
>Look up appealing art styles to said audience
>Study them inside out
>Then develop a new art style based on studies
>Market yourself to that target audience
>Post where they are, follow them around

Good luck.

I personally would never commission you, your art skills are decent, but the lack of appeal is a turn off.

>i know a lot of people find my style ugly and gross but i truly love the style ive developed
Then i think you answered your own question. You care more about your own enjoyment of your art than others, which is fine, commendable even, but growth has nothing to do with your enjoyment but the audience's. And frankly, not many like your art.

Look, dude, if you really think designs that are ugly on purpose are appealing outside modern western animation, that's on you, the crowd you'll get with that's the same people who will harrass anyone to self-deletion just because they draw a character without a beer belly (coughstevenuniversecough)

If you're doing it for free, go ahead and do whatever you want, no one's stopping you.

But if you are thinking on get money from your art, know that only commiefornians and tumblrinas like the calarts and the ugly on purpose style, everybody else likes appealing designs, that's just how it is.

In my experience there are two main reasons people do poorly on social media:
1. Bad work.
2. Bad presentation.
You need to detach yourself from your art and try to look at it from the perspective of a consumer scrolling through instagram. If OP pic is what you're posting then its no surprise you have no followers. It doesn't matter how many fundies you grind, if your images aren't composed to take advantage of the platform then nobody will see them.
My advice to you is:
1. Make your art more appealing.
2. Specify your target audience. My woodworking account has ~2k followers and 3 posts. The market for what I was doing already existed. I was able to just post something well put together and Instagram blew it up. If you look at my account, you immediately know what I do and what kind of person will like that. Looking at OP pic I have no idea what that is or who would be interested in it.
3. Look at the kind of posts that get views and learn to play the game. You need thumbnails that will stick out in feeds. A white background with a couple of random characters is not it. You're trying to be a professional artist. There's no excuse for having sloppy presentation. Don't know what to say other than, figure it out.
Social media companies wan't people to view content. They're going to do everything they can to boost content that people want to see. Unless you're being edgy, no views probably means you just need to get better.

gave the best advice on here.
Being a good artist and selling art are two different skill sets. Even if your art-style was appealing (which even on a technical level there's so many problems), there's no audience for the subject matter you presented. Fan art of humanized characters usually never gains an audience (w/ the exception of puss-n-boots) and even if Rio was still popular for some reason, it's just another boring pin-up.
If you want to sell art, you have to think about who you're selling it to. Is it some niche fetish? a specific community? The general public?
Then try to find these groups. Do they use twitter a lot? instagram, discord, steam community hub?
And finally ask yourself, what does this group want? Pinups, animations, fanart, erotic art?
Based on just your words and picrel, I'm assuming your trying to gain an audience for a fandom no one is in or a fetish no one cares for, on a platform no one in the fandom or niche fetish is using. Your whole approach is pointing you towards a ditch.
Either pick a new fandom/fetish and/or find the platform your fandom/fetish is on.

Unless you can drastically change your sense of aesthetic and develop new (better) taste, you're fucked. How on Earth you managed to miss every possible facet of appeal in that drawing I can only chalk up to a purposeful attempt to make something completely offensive to the eye, not to mention insulting to the original designs.
If that's the style that you like and you have fun with it then keep going. But if you're trying to draw for other people's enjoyment (as you seem to be), you HAVE to change.

You, and the anon you're replying to are the best answers ITT.

OP here's my advice:

>Learn business skills

Just the basics are enough, since you don't even know the very basics like:

>Supply & Demand

There's no demand for your art OP, that's why no one commission you.

When you realize that your art is either a product (Comic, Animation, Game or Painting) or a service (Freelance or Art Industry) and you treat it as such, then you'll make money from it.
