If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

this is getting messy so I'll stop here
bellybutton should be in the center
the legs are posed opposite what they should be, I detailed the shin length on the left figure at the bottom. If you look at the angle of the hips, her right leg would need farther to reach the ground since it starts higher, so it would need to be more straightened out.
the curling arm, the upper and lower arm should be close to the same length. Trick to find the elbow position is to draw a line between the shoulder and hand then draw a 90 degree line out from it. The elbow will be somewhere on that line.
>>6615374
good attempt, you're trying some perspective but things aren't following the same planes. Girl on the right needs a lower torso area overhaul as it looks like it's twisted to the right.

the figures are drawn in ways that illuminate so much about the figure when copying through and analyzing, even though they may not look so simple and "beginner friendly". Drawing his figures in the various forms that he makes them slowly reveals so many insights that you might not get from something a lot simpler, while also being healthily exaggerated and constructed in a manageable way so as not to be overwhelming. The inconsistency in the methods he uses makes it so that each figure reveals different little tidbits that you can pick out, rather than every figure being either some complex muscle diagram or some youtube construction.

I can see a little bit of anatomy in this, so I think you're probably picking something up from Bridgman, but I'll be honest I would never look at this and think "this guy's been studying his Bridgman". That said, if this is the level you're at, I would put Bridgman down and come back to him when you're more of an intermediate, and focus on basic form studies (box and cylinder mannequins, etc.) and line confidence. Also draw bigger, any drawing where I can see this much paper texture and little eraser bits is basically microscopic in terms of drawing a human being. Drawing small is a whole extra thing to learn and you're adding a massive layer of difficulty by doing this.

>> No.6616588

Not terrible - these are pretty credible super-beg figure drawings. I'd draw from real people for sure, not anything stylized, and make sure you're spending a TON of time doing basic, basic fundies (cubes and cylinders - alone at first, then stuck together into mannequins). If you want to draw legit heads you should also focus on real people, the skull etc. via a method like Loomis (or any other Loomis-esque head method but his has the most resources). Mostly you just have a HUGE amount of mileage ahead of you, the best thing you can do is draw a tremendous amount.

>>6616813
Vilppu gives you a very step by step gradual method to construction. Lines into spheres, spheres into boxes, combining spheres and boxes. There's no step missing, and the beginner isn't rushing ahead too fast.

Read the text of his drawing manual. You're not ONLY drawing basic forms. You're applying the forms to characters drawn from imagination, master copies, and from life. But you are actively limiting yourself, first, to spheres, then, to boxes, then spheres and boxes, and only finally, at the end, cylinders.

Michael Hampton rushes past form too quickly, and he sort of just expects you to "pick it up" as you draw. If that works for you, great, but anon asked how to understand Hampton and Bridgman, and Vilppu's method works best. Vilppu taught Hampton, after all.

I think part of my current issue with line confidence is mechanical pencil, where line weight and value comes with scratchiness, so I'm planning on trying out charcoal this weekend. I'll be honest with you, that's part of it. You are going to experience that self doubt pretty much non-stop throughout your whole life as an artist (or you will if you're challenging yourself enough to improve). If you can find the motivation to do it constantly anyway you'll look back every year and be amazed every time how much you've improved.

That said... get some real figure drawing references - drawing close up short lens stuff like this is not probably helping you right now (this photo is extremely distorted). Eventually you'll want to learn to draw that sort of "lens" for dynamism but in the early days it's going to make it hard to develop a natural sense of proportion.

>> No.6617185

I mean if that's what you got, that's what you got - I started in a moleskine sized book with a mech pencil too. You're making time at work to draw which is fantastic. If you get a big big newsprint pad and a charcoal pencil (the conte pencils are good, generals also good) and focus on drawing (no smudgy "realism" or big "eye on a page" drawings) it'll def help. I would do your mannequins from photos of people, and I have no time for hunting basic practice ref anymore so I have a lot of paid graphit type stuff from artstation, but honestly croquiscafe, free trial of NMA.art (and download as many pics as you can) - whatever gets you some vaguely academic non-phone-camera nude refs to practice. I like Marc Brunet's videos on mannequinization more than Proko's - just because I feel his definitely reflect his academic leaning where you always expect to draw from life / photos, not inventing anything. Don't get me wrong you can do it either way and working gesture-becomes-mannequin is fine but you need a system with real simple cylinders and boxes that you can make up in your head if you want to invent your own poses.

I'm really scared of taking drugs like that considering my brother was on Adderall or Ritalin, I forget which, for like 13 years and he was a zombie but I just might have to bite the bullet. I need something to show for all the time I waste.

How easy is it to get some? I don't think they'll just sell it to you just because you want it, right? You need some kind of condition to be treated with it? For the most part I'm a normie and just have no drive so I don't think I'd be able to swing something like that.

He's fucking retarded. Stay away from Adderall, if you're actually tempted to go down the drug path look into nootropics. An example would be something like Modafinil, which is like Adderall but without the amphetamines. Getting it still requires a prescription but is much less strict than something like Adderall and is much less harmful too.
Obviously this is something you should talk to an actual doctor over rather than a bunch of retards on fucking 4chan.

I get that, but what would I even tell them? "Hey doc I need to focus more so I can learn how to draw pictures better." I'm well aware of the risks but the clock is ticking man, I gotta find some kind of way to make some headway because the """willpower and sheer determination""" delusion I've been feeding myself for years clearly is not doing the job.

There are always ways to get certain unreputable things on the internet. You're insane if you think I'm going to spell it out to anyone. I can't tell you to lie to your doctor to get drugs and I can't tell you to google search how to buy said drugs. This is a journey you'll have to take on your own.

You actually have two other options: You can quit, or you can learn discipline. Maybe your easily distracted online, forcing yourself to draw offline might be a solution. You can look up things like Cold Turkey application, which forces you to do certain tasks on your computer.
You have plenty of choices anon.

didn't mean to come off as a fed but I see why my comments would get the ball rolling in that direction. I guess I'll try to go to a doctor and actually go see if I do have ADHD or not and work my way from there. i don't really do figure drawing in photoshop cause my ipad emulates pencils and charcoal much better but here is a quick 3 minute with no warm up to show you how much more useful it is to measure using negative space shapes. You don't even have to draw them out like I did, I'm just trying to get the idea across. But you'll save yourself from needing all those silly measurements if you just think of the negative space in relation to the whole. It will greatly improve your accuracy in assessing proportion and placement of things.

If you’re no longer passionate about your hobby, take a break or just quit entirely lmao. Plenty of other shit to do and you’ll eventually get over it, probably.
If you’re a unmotivated lazy retard I don’t think taking prescription meth is the solution, and it will probably make your sober self even lazier. Imho.

When you did that a couple of times, start drawing cylinders in perspective on the lines. My accuracy wasn't perfect. I'm not really critiquing your accuracy. Moreso your method of attaining it being one that will be much slower. You don't want to have to draw a bunch of lines on your ref like you did. Plus negative shapes will also allow you to get results outside of just photo ref. Just give looking for negative shapes a try. If you don't like that way you can just ignore me and do it how you're doing.

Serious question: why bother with timewasting bullshit like this instead of just studying artists you like? How is this shit going to help you draw sexy anime girls for example? The /beg/ trap meme is real, and it's shit like this and the drawabox bs that really grinds my gears because it doesn't help with achieving your goals at all. Study artists you like for a few days, then start an OC project to put it in practice, repeat ad infinitum. That's how you get good imo. I've never seen someone do drawabox for x amount of time and then say: "oh yeah I've improved so much, couldn't have done it without drawing boxes in perspective for a gazillion years instead of just practicing what I want to be able to draw."

I have trouble with constructing in 3D space so I thought I'd do drawabox to get better at it since it's basically the whole conceit of the course
The first lesson is mind numbing and grindy and I'm not even sure what use it is because I feel more like I'm just internalising symbols for these boxes than actually understanding them in 3D but the lessons after this seem more useful so I decided to at least try doing it

The point of the exercise is to test visuo-spatial intelligence. Some people intuitively grasp it without any effort, maybe that's you. But others may not have that talent. Go on Drawabox discord and check out some of the user posts. Some people have an abysmal sense of how shapes rotate. They can't even conceive of it and their exercises reflect that. These people should just pick their favorite artist and study? Study what? They have an appalling understanding of form. I'm not saying DAB in its whole is the perfect way for these people to train, but at least you should understand the point of the exercise before commenting this.

I haven't drawn in a week because I got addicted to vidya again so I'm forcing myself to draw

This is only true if all, or most variables are exactly the same. Time spent means nothing in the absence of context. As an example: You failed to consider the age and experience of both artists.

I'm recovering from addiction man. It's a living hell.
Now I have paranoia and anxiety. This is not fun.
I barely work on my art. My life is over pills have fucked me in the head.

You can easily get started with a pencil and a stack of cheap printer paper. It's fun to have a lot of professional-looking tools sitting around, but it's not going to make you better at drawing.
