If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:

New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
Read the sticky

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

After being inspired by an older post, I completed the main lessons from Art Academy for Nintendo DS. The lessons were well thought-out with a good balance between freedom and restrictions to focus on real work, rather than just settings. Every lesson was great, except for the last one on landscapes. The swan lesson was my favorite. Before this, I avoided painting, but now I plan to do it more frequently as the game gave me the basic tools to create simple art.

>>6592491
Cool brush work, but as the other guy said, the dog gets lost in the background a little bit. I would also recommend you to scale down the drawing a bit before posting, since now it gets too big when you open it up.

>>6592491

Good job! Nice structure.

>>6592596
Good lines and it shows that you've done some anatomy studies. Don't shy away from using black. More anatomy studies + I'd pay attention to proportions (small hands), and studying structure never hurt anyone. Also, the face is pretty far behind the rest, but faces are hard.

>>6592632

It's okay to just stick to what you like. BUT: Start with something much more simple. You could create a grid on top of this reference and your drawing and compare to see where you went off, just to train to not draw what you know, but to draw what you actually see. For example, your drawing almost has the eyeglasses correct, but the whole face starts to lean too much to the right. Try to just copy the silhouette of the face and ignore the details.

>>6592767

Suggest you to resize the image before posting, opens up yuuge. BUT: the colors seem super fine. Reminds me of Ken Sughimoris pokemon card illustrations.

Look at the ref, take some time to look it over, identify overall gesture, composition, major volumes, how shapes flow into each other, all that fundie nonsense.
Draw the biggest shape and/or lay down some marks, like for figures for example it's common to mark where the top and bottom will be as well as the midpoint. Then draw that one major form. Compare to the original, is it in the right place? right size? right tilt? etc. If no, fix what's wrong, if yes, move on to the next shape, rinse and repeat. Use measuring techniques like plumb/level lines, midpoints, angles, and so to check for accuracy often, and also as you copy try to understand why things are the way they are, internalize how the artist drew some part foreshortened, or how a certain element looks from w/e angle they drew it (like a head seen from below).

TLDR: Use basic fundies and techniques to make an accurate replica as possible, while also trying to understand why the artist made things a certain way and internalize them for your mental library.

Thanks a lot almost quads, but I mean that whenever I'm not using that, I draw like pic related.

Like that's the most I could do before feeling exhausted.

Gesture. Gesture can make up for bad anatomy. But people won't care about the accurate anatomy if the gesture is bad.
Basically, as long as it's aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Then it's good. Anatomy is there to help really sell the illusion and add the secret sauce, but if that anatomy compromises the gesture to the point it looks unappealing, break from anatomy a bit more. It's a balancing act that takes time and effort where you might notice slight improvements after a month (kinda like weight gain, you're the first to notice it) but after 6 or so months you can really see it.

Any tips on how to draw the eyes and mouth onto the face? I'm trying to imagine the eye sockets and jaws but it's still turning out kinda bad

>> No.6594101

>>6594087
Draw a tube. try drawing around the tube. You're doing pretty okay in the lower right, you just didn't commit to a round tube, it's like half-flattened.

Think about a flat line drawn around 1/3 the circumference of a tube. When you look at it from the front, you see the whole thing. from an angle, you might see the whole thing but part of it is 'compressed'. From a more acute angle, and the edge of the tube overlaps the line and you can't see that part because it is now on the opposite side of the tube.

part of the issue might be that it's hard to draw the tubes as 3d forms when it's so small. Draw the practice faces bigger and literally just draw tubes over the places the eyes and mouth should be, then wrap lines around them. It'll fuck up the drawings, but those are practice drawings anyway. Eventually you'll kinda get a handle on how to use short-hand shapes to 'find your way' and represent eyes and mouths in 3d better.

Frankly, once you read Loomis, you have to draw from reference a couple thousand times. All the various angles you draw the face from mesh into a complete 3d understanding. It helps to draw the skull too

I suggest you copy artists you like, instead of drawing from life, because there are exact lines for you to copy

>>6595581
you should have drawn the thot, all old masters hired prostitutes regularly to draw them, thats how you GMIed in the past

this is topic which is discussed in all beg books. they all say roughly the same thing: have realistic expectations, be kind to yourself and instead of focusing on how bad you are focus on how to fix the errors. just draw. personally when i draw a really fucked up thing i laught. it is like a joke, but in drawing form

>>6595048
kek. you have healthy dose of confidence! anyway you made some very beg errors in that drawing but lets be fair: drawing faces is like 4th chapter of keys to drawing so if you keep on track you will soon learn what you failed there.

Even if you fail, but still realize what you did wrong, you will learn from it. Failure helps you understand what you are lacking and need to work on.
Also, nobody can work perfectly all the time. Most people will produce dud from time to time. You can't fail only if you don't do anything, in your case, don't draw anything.
