If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Asking again since I'm completely lost when I thought I had the idea kinda locked down.
Having issues with painting/rendering. Feel like I'm just monkeying around and the end result, or at least where I'm trying to go with it, is muddy and messy.
Think at this point I'll just try to keep it simple since I feel like I'm overthinking things. Anyone have any good guides? I'm looking at other artists as well as I try to get a better understanding of this.

Stop. Delete all the shading you've done until now. Avoid multiply layers unless you *really* know what you're doing. Pick the colors you need for the shadows instead. Do not make shit up. Use reference and imitate, and watch streams/speedpaints if you're still clueless, but use reference mainly.

Honestly not bad for only practicing for a month. I've been feeling that as well while learning how to render, I think knowing more about how light interacts with form the easier it is to picture a person or object in a 3D space and the foundation work of drawing becomes second nature. I think it's a sign of really internalizing the fundamentals of drawing and it makes me happy at least so hopefully it does for you as well.

hey im a prebeg, so my question is how do u start out a drawing like this? you do the line drawing first and then do the rendering right? my friend whos a painter keeps saying don't do line, like he wants me to 'paint' with pencil if that makes sense. just wants shift in values indicating object boundaries. im lost here.

>> No.6588687

>>6588671
I professor told me the same thing actually, no lines! I was in the bad mindset of trying to block out each individual shadow instead of "painting" out the actual form of the light and shadows. The point of drawing and learning the structure is purely foundational, you use it as a guide for where you need to paint your shadows as the forms shift towards or away from the light. Make sure to do a lot of blending too and do it in layers, you can always add more but taking away is a bit more difficult.
Hopefully that helps

Do you draw medium length hatch marks with your shoulder? I'm really struggling with hatching accuracy when the hatches are tight and have a contour. using ballpoint pen and it's demoralizing when I'm 3/4 of the way through and one of my lines is off. With my wrist I'm more accurate but the lines come off a bit wobbly and less convincing. With my shoulder it just doesn't seem possible to get tight, consistent marks. It's so hard that I find it hard to believe anyone can do it. Do you guys use wrist, elbow or shoulder for these?

I quite like it, but be careful what colors you end up choosing for that gloved/mechanical arm, so it doesn't blend too much with the jacket. Also probably make the smoke in his mouth bigger and a different color/more white, as it currently is, looks more like he has a split lip or a cold sore. Trying to get my gf to draw more, anything good for the omegabeg? She is unfortunately much like many here - 0 imagination, 0 motivation, 0 ability to stick to a regimen. I "think" I can help with that, things are easier to do with a partner, but for example I know Loomis is off the table, as are most beginner courses unless they routinely prescribe homework for literal simple markmaking and/or drill 3d form into your head. She is like many others and will not accept learning by failing and gets super pissed if the first two lines in a drawing haven't btfo Raphael. I have been making her do drawabox's homework but that sucks ASS to do on a screenless tablet, but at least she does have confident lines now, so there's one step chipped away at. No boxes yet. With this all in mind I had thought to make her do DaB until she was confident enough to tackle some video course with me, something that covers forms again, and just let gains and enjoyment flow from that. The tablet precludes her from literally just going outside to draw from life (Google images will have to suffice) so that's tough. Maybe I can get a PDF of Keys and have it up it as we draw.

>> No.6589027

>>6589024
About lack of homework, you could just assign that yourself. As for frustration, yeah, do Keys or right side of brain, since they teach how to improve observation and accuracy, and both come with a ton of exercises to do. It's a real confidence booster when your lines start coming out the way you want them because you took the time to analyze the subject and know how to measure and put down the correct lines.

I just corrected some anatomy and made it less sketchy, defining better the cape and the main parts of the suit, and i also got rid of the gargoyle he was standing on, since it was getting too complicated and taking to much attention, so i just put a fun blob thing for him to stand on.

a fuck ton. that course is designed in such a way so as to train you to draw accurately on paper. he doesn't say it and the dude needs to refine his approach to teaching, but the homework is grounded in a grind that will force you to intuitively discover 3D see through thinking and blocking in. the ghosting method is just blocking in, but mentally. watch guys like Peter Han or Kim Jung Gi do a piece, the little dots they place almost randomly are left and right limits for example, to help maintain the accuracy. for drawabox, on tablet there is no pressure to perform. you can't ghost as well, usually you can't shoulder draw as well (i do both and indeed on paper, easy to shoulder draw, on my wacom it's all elbow but it works fine), plus you have a ctrl+z which despite what you might say, will absolutely get used.

break down the fundies that DaB wants to teach you, extract them, and just do them independent of the prescribed course, because nothing is going to translate "directly" to digital and much of it in fact translates only to someone sitting and drawing iteratively on paper. so, practice the things like perspective and 3d drawing, maybe a little bit of construction, but try and find a digital oriented teacher. maybe get some digifundies and steal the RinoTuna course floating around the other thread.

TLDR Drawabox good for paper not so good for digital

Figured it take a shot at drawing this myself. Avoid drawing individual lines for strands of hair. I suck at drawing hair and am lazy but it kind of serves my point, I just blocked out the shape of the hair and vaguely indicated the shapes of the highlights and it does well enough to show what the hair is doing in the image. The Sinix Anatomy Quick Tips video on hair might give you a decent idea of what I'm talking about here.

Secondly I recommend choosing better reference as a beginner. The image you're working from, while cool, the lighting is a bit soft and a lot of the forms around the nose are getting lost I feel like. Working from images with a stronger lighting scheme makes drawing much easier, and in my opinion makes it a bit easier to make gains from studies.

Maybe shes just gurning tf out but her jaw is off centre to the rest of her face, and the proportions for the features are pretty far off. I find this becomes a lot easier with just mileage mainly.

Her nose also looks like a chode, I recommend Prokos videos to learn a bit more about the actual forms of the features and whatnot.

Solid effort though anon, keep at it!

Something Kim Jung Gi once said as he was drawing - "I wish others could see the lines I see" as an explanation for how he laid out complicated figures freehand without apparent preparation or guides. In reality, he had enough experience that he mentally overlaid his own personal waypoints and guides as he drew.

This is what is tough for people to learn, but it has to be done. All the process techniques repeated in art - circles, blocks, measurement tics, vanishing points, scales... these things often don't work well for beginners at first because unfortunately, they're not actually generic and mechanistic steps to follow. They're concepts. As you learn, you will intuitively create your own version of these concepts. The circle with line drawn around it will come to be part of a specific strategy you develop for building a head. Your own measuring tics will become a habit, rather than simply and rigidly following a generic system or guide.

I feel a lot of stress from learning to draw goes away once a person understands this. It's discouraging to try following a system precisely yet not see what you expect to be the results.

I need some real life materials because Norling's Page 60 diagram with the paper and line and stuff filtered me like nobody's business. I'm right at that level of frustration and determination that precedes the "aha" moment but damn I need some brain wrinkles to form up. Ok so the square edges of a paper represents your cone of vision I think? Then you draw a line over the paper to represent an eye level and associated VPs? And as the paper, or you (and your cone), rotates, so too will the perspective at which you view the object in relation to the unmoving eyeline (because you're not growing or shrinking, I guess). Does this make sense? I am misunderstanding it, but it isn't the information's fault.

This is a question / semi vent

Question wise, is this too rushed? I can't tell if I need to put more time into like the transitions from where he makes contact with the ground, then gets up, then runs etc. Also, does it feel too jittery for you all as well? Any tips?

It feels like just adding frames isn't the solution here, I love animation that is lower on frame count, 2's, 3's that can make large fast movements with very little frames. But the only way I can get a sembelence of nice movement is a mix of 1's and 2's

And for the vent I guess, I don't know why but animation is making me so angry recently. It takes so fucking long to do. I love it, like I love the fact that its an art form, and that I can get better at it. But sometimes the actual practice of it makes me want to rip my eyes out. But it feels like a part of me, and I don't wanna quit. Is the only way to get rid of this gnawing feeling just 'git gud?'

if you're learning loomis, don't fall into the trap of thinking every face has to be constructed the same way, with the circle in the middle and all those lines and planes; use the specific elements that help guide you in constructing; if it's a middle line or just establishing where the eyes go

i also recommend studying individual features for a bit, learn the shapes of the eye, the nose, the mouth; work on those a bit, then find some references online and try to replicate it

a problem with faces is that they're very much focused around shape and shading to display form, and the very mechanical constructed methods make that quite tricky and overwhelming when you're starting out, so also look at how artists you like design features once you have an understanding, because stylisation helps work around that more mechanical feel

Practice with purpose and thought, don't just grind mindlessly expecting to get better. Would you improve at playing the piano if all you did was sit for eight hours banging the keys over and over?

Most of drawabox is mind-numbing dipshittery, but a lot of the practice exercises are genuinely good for fresh beginners. Do shit like this, rest your arm if it starts getting sore, and reevaluate your grip occasionally to see if holding the pen differently feels more natural.

Can someone help me here? This *is* meant to be stylized somewhat, but something about the face doesn't feel right. I'm just trying to get a better feel for it before I start trying to paint.

In order to stylize, you need to know what you are stylizing in the first place. Without strong fundamentals on how to draw heads or a reference, it's always going to come out looking like botched plastic surgery.

I've been trying to work from a couple of reference images, but come to think of it... I didn't do any construction, I just started drawing... which I guess was retarded

Very heavy slampig vibe. Looks like the kind of girl who will lick the puke off your dick and thank you for it.

Colors feels really off to me, what did I do wrong?

Hello beg, pick your main!

not enough values on her skin. your water color set has black for a reason anon! Also that shape of boobs is probably realistic but kinda anti-coomer
>>6592117
depends on if you will learn something from it or not. Polishing turd for whole day wont teach you anything but perhaps you can make experiment on it and test some new stuff you havent tried yet. Then its worth it

begs struggle to draw what they see, int struggle to draw what they dont see and pros dont struggle, they just draw whatever whenever however and it just looks good

cool but go draw naked people to learn more forms and anatomy. clothes hide everything so you dont learn much

you are overthinking it. he is just telling you that vanishing points are always very far away and even if you rotate the cube that 1 VP is closing to middle of your field of vision the next one is running away while still stuck on eye level

the background trees are better than your main tree. mostly leaves are the problem. they are too uniform and pattern doesnt change at all. Introduce some black areas and change the pattern so it is more like tree leaves like

Why does every drawing I do with construction terrible compared to just eyeing it and mentally constructing it?
