find your own method. for me i just block out color and blur that shit. if i want superb details then might need to carefully refine when blurring, more color picking in value, highlight. i just done this in 3 mins.

lack of form.
colors don't exist in a void, remember that shadows need to keep following the form. otherwise you get weird concaves happening like that tummy.

I am moderately confident in my understanding of form, though I do see what you mean here.
I guess I don't understand how to properly depict form while painting

Another thing that concerns me is that whenever I try to blend things they just look like a blurry mess, but in yours it all looks deliberate

I wasn't that anon, just poitning it out.
The big thing with shading is getting the blending right so it feels like it follows the form.

But as for your forms in that picture, the belly extends outward not inward, parts of it will be concave, but as an overall the stomach part extends outward, light should wrap around past the mid point.

Also while that anon did blur things, hard lines are a good thing and even his has lines that are less blended (though still blurred) that give a harder indication of forms with darker shadows as opposed to everything being a messy blend.

I'd show you an example but I'll be honest, i fucking suck at coloring too. i just see similar mistakes I've made.

>The big thing with shading is getting the blending right so it feels like it follows the form.
This makes sense to me in theory, but I don't understand the actual mechanics of doing this. Like when I touch the blur/smudge/whatever tool, the blending just goes everywhere and I have no control over it

>the belly extends outward not inward
You're right; when I did the lines there I had the concavity created by the bellybutton in mind, but I wasn't fully paying attention and accidentally went crazy with it

>i just see similar mistakes I've made

I have similar problem too anon, i can describe form with ease with cross contour line but i struggle describing it with value and edge. People keep telling to understand the form but i did, i just dont know how to do it with value

>> No.6584376

>>6584294
Value is interesting. It's basically an extensive cross contour exercise, in it of itself. Each plane has a different value. You need to describe each plane, each facet, as if it were a complex jewel. There is no brick left unturned, as you crawl over the form. Each square inch has to fit in perfectly with the totality of the form. The more you paint, the more you see...

There's no way you can achieve that level of precision with cross-contours lines. And with cross-contours, there's no way you know whether you're doing it correctly or now

Am this anon >>6588115. The last art book I read was one of the flagship Loomis releases cause I kept getting fucked over by heads a couple of years ago. Otherwise, I'm not sure how much I'd be able to help:
>did figure, form, grayscale value studies
>even on "proper" work with a clothed figure, I made sure to first render it nude for study
>implemented some retarded challenge runs where I limited myself to using a hard-edged round brush and nothing else, using smaller sizes as needed to make values fade — didn't allow myself to undo anything at all, instead trying to practice placing values as well as I could
>using normal brushes for colour paintings now feels easier in comparison
I'm nowhere near the level I wanna be at, but specifically getting a better understanding of form and then values made things click much more pleasingly, turning it more fun. My first ever attempt at painting was fucking terrible — also felt terrible cause I didn't know fundies enough

I initially used the shape strat, which I combined with further knowledge of light physics and shit when I went on. Light physics still confuse me, though, I definitely need to work on knowing where to place light bounces according to form. I used pic rel recently for one of my quicker studies and her torso was screwing me over due to the ambient occlusion
