**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Copying, at least when experienced artists do it, is not done for the sake of being a copy of somebody else, but so you can pick out and internalize the ingredients of the artist's style you're studying. The goal is to be able to either a) use parts of their style in your work directly or b) be able to riff on their stylistic recipe and figure out your own new synthesis.

For example, P&S nor Popstar Epic are particularly original at their core. The core ingredients of their styles can be found elsewhere but in different quantities and arrangements. The creators were inspired, and then played around with those bits of inspiration to create what they have at the end. Inspiration ---> Transformation and remixing.

Copy so that you can acquire basic ingredients to play around with, and then make your own art to play around with the ingredients you've exposed yourself to.

Generally, the lines in anime art are thin. I made them a bit thicker in the outline and converging lines. I also made the line of the face thicker because I wanted to draw attention to it.
>Face
I don't know if I misunderstood, but in your drawing it seems like the glasses cover the eye line. The eyes are the most important part of the face to show the character's appeal and expression, so I moved the glasses down a bit. I also changed the face shape to have more of a cheek.

Line thickness has noting to do with flatness. What makes an image feel flat or not is depth and volume, which can be communicated regardless of weight (see picrel). You have to train yourself to be able to see 3D shapes on a 2D plane, and draw lines that approach or recede away from the viewer in a way that communicates convincing volume. The ability to do this is the backbone of good lineart. Without it, the drawing will feel unconvincing from the start, and no amount of line weight or coloring or rendering will save it.

I hope you don't mind, but I colored this to see what it'd look like. Often if I use a thin pen to draw, like what I think the pros do, I feel like my art is pretty lifeless, so I never get to the coloring phase. I wanted to see if coloring helps. Not really sure.

Learn how ellipses behave. If someone is looking right at the camera then the ellipse of both the iris and pupil has to be completely open, a perfectly circle in other words. Imagine a coffee cup or a tube, in order to look directly into it, it must be perpendicular to your line of sight and if it is then the opening will be a perfect circle.

No. They use tons of direct references and rotoscoping to get their work done in time. Especially if they have to do arena battles. The anatomy sections are surprisingly hefty and quite good for both beginners and intermediates imo. I'm spending the month just going through that before moving to the character design lessons, but I assume that part's probably gonna be good too. Only problem is not being able to draw while looking at the subs because I don't understand korean so it's a lot of pausing. But in the end i'd argue his books provide pretty much the same lessons so depends which way you learn better from.

(The settei I use are: Katekyo hitman reborn, kill la kill, Lwa and Sword art online)
And I use construction books like

Draw a line across the face and use the lasso tool. If you're using paper and pencil use an eraser. If you're using pen suck it up and try again.
>6598240
Well all I did for >>6598222 was pull up refs like the style guide and a bunch of screenshots of Nonon, then a few poses that I like (real models I found on Pinterest in this case, just some cute poses)

Then I did a figure drawing session while trying my hardest to match the refs. I found a bunch of shorthand that works for me for the specific character and refined the few rules that can be applied across all figure drawing.

You guys need to recognize that not a single artistic project you tackle will have the same rules as the last one. There are fundamentals that transfer across (in the case of this thread they're all just figure drawing), but ultimately different characters are going to need slightly different approaches. A different base shape for the eyes will work for Nonon that won't work for Ryuko, for example. You have to train THAT part of your brain, the part that lets you find those little nuances within the designs in order to crack the code for how to draw them properly. You need to learn this before you can even try applying it to your own characters, in which case it's still gonna take alot of brute force.

Just blindly copying images -will not help you- and I'm telling you this from alot more experience than most of you have combined. When you do a study like that, you need to knuckle the fuck down and figure out what you're trying to learn from it before you even start, then you need to be willing to fail and fail EARLY so you can scrap your work and start over without losing 10 hours of effort on a piece that wasn't gonna get you anything to begin with.
