If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Anyone have good resources on landscapes in particular? Painting, drafting, thumbnailing, etc? Most things I find are on figure drawing, or they might touch on perspective principles to make a background. I’ve mostly just been trying to copy photos I’ve taken in order to practice my observation, but I’m wondering if there are some good techniques I’m missing out on.

Not the same Anon, but to me, there's nothing that grabs the attention of the viewer, everything is on the same 'level' when some stuff should detach from the background. The woman should be more detached from the Minotaur. Try squinting, and if it all comes out a blurry mess instead of a woman shaped body on top of a cow headed shaped man itself detaching from the background then you know what to work on.

Summary:
>Do 20 minute studies, for 2 hours a day
>Basically, find reference from google, and copy it.
>Start with subject matter that's easy, interesting, but also stretches your abilities
>Be loose
>Start with big forms / shapes
>Add line-weights
>Add cross-contours and some basic shadowing
>Have fun!

When you get the basics of why gesture is used it's enough.
You can see the flow of the body and you'll see more and more as you progress in other things like anatomy.
You don't have to be a master at it to continue, far from it, it's a concept that'll be usefull and be more and more usefull the beter you get.

>> No.6572999

>>6572989
I think gesture is more helpful later on, when you are already good at observation/copying and can get the pose accurately enough, so all your focus is on the gesture itself, rather than struggle with everything at once as a /beg/.
Feel free to do them in your own time for fun, but you won't get much out of them until later on, and it's just time wasted you could be investing in figure and other skills.

It doesn't feel like you've spent a very long time on any study. Find artwork you admire, and copy it. 20 minutes per study, at least. Get it EXACT, down to the sweep and tremors of their lines. Make it indistinguishable. If the study turned out like crap, start over and do it again. Do this every day, for several months, and you'll begin to see things you never saw before.

I say all this, because your lines look like you're operating off theory alone, as if you were going "this is where the deltoid goes, then here is the triceps, etc.". That's like a language learner constructing sentences off grammar alone. You need to copy and get a feel for how the fundamentals of figure drawing apply to actually drawing.

despite how much I wanted to throw all my art supplies in the bin, I drew a fish
idk Anons, I've been down this road before, 4 years ago I got through half of Keys to Drawing and a bit of Drawabox, found the latter to be very unenjoyable, so much so that I only started again in the last few days
just feeling a bit overwhelmed and hopeless. I know that grinding fundies isn't fulfilling, and the advice of just drawing what I want to is not gonna work since whenever I do that I immediately want to never draw again because it looks so bad
the process of drawing doesn't feel fun on any level. maybe it would if I was better, but that's not the case, and the way to get better is in itself not fun

>Why do you want to draw?
not long ago I was making crude pixel art, but soon realized that I was sticking to incredibly simple stuff as a crutch, and that if I had the ability I'd be making much more complex work
I have lots of ideas for games that I'd like to be able to actually get out of my head, but to do so would require drawing ability
also, I save so much art from other people that it pains me to not be able to make it myself, to the point where I've felt bitter at others for having said ability
>Is there anything about drawing that makes it fun for you
not really, outside of the exercise of making organic looking shapes with loose motions from the shoulder, that feels quite fun once I get into the flow-state
I feel like I need a guarantee that if I just keep doing what I'm doing I'll end up being able to draw everything I can imagine, but it seems so uncertain that I feel as if I'll potentially just be putting myself through mind-numbing grind for countless hours

>> No.6574032

>>6574008
Everyone has these doubts, but if you want to learn to draw you need to put them away. There is no guarantee that you will learn drawing, because many people who set out on the path never end up making it. The success rate is really really low. I've seen artists drag on for 10 years plus, never improving, even though they take classes from Vilppu, Brainstorm, CDA, listening to all the pros. When you are in this business long enough, you begin to see how incompetent most people are. And unfortunately, you are right now in that class of incompetent people.

But if you have the drive to think critically and overcome your negative attitude, then you can learn to draw. Countless anons have done it, and you can do it too.

My advice is to follow this guide: https://davidfinchart.com/where-to-start-and-where-to-go-from-there-a-roadmap-to-professional-quality-art/

Do it with real effort, and you'll improve. I think you should jump into figure drawing straight away, because animals, landscapes, etc are all too easy. Many landscape painters never learn to draw the figure because they get stuck. Start figure drawing, and watch yourself grow.

>> No.6574056

>>6573864
Your lines look weird because they're all composed of short straight lines instead of a single smooth line. It's digital so just try to get large portions of the linework in with one smooth line and you can always keep your finger on the undo button. It's not unusual to try to get the perfect line by drawing it like 20 times until you get it right and it'll get you mileage.

Anon, try drawing something for fun for change and don't give a shit about fundies for a while. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try to not apply what you learned from your copies but just draw whatever comes to mind, not matter how ridiculous the idea is even if you think you can't draw it correct just do some doodles and random shit. Try drawing some concepts for your game ideas first, don't worry about them being perfect for now you want to first start with the ideas and you'll eventually improve and build upon them anyway.

For grinding I suggest picking up life drawing or trying a new medium if you haven't already. Maybe what you need is a switch up from your usual tools or monotonous routines to try something new and this can provide a new perspective with potential gains. Try coloring, painting, or rendering sometimes you have to polish turds. For the goldfish look carefully at the folds of the fins, think about how they work and how the fins swim. Think more and ask yourself about the subject, by making yourself curious about your subject instead of thinking of it as a means to an end but more as an opportunity to learn about your subject. That mindset makes it feel less mind-numbing grinding for the sake of git gud but more as fun learning. Sure it might ultimately be a means to an end but if you are able to change your mindset it will make it more bearable cause one of the easiest ways to get through grinding is finding a way to make it fun somehow. Is there anything you enjoy or anything you ever wanted to study? Try drawing that subject, maybe find a subject that you want to include in your game to study.

mostly just process stuff relating to how I can get the drawing to be as accurate as possible, mixed with a lot of self-doubt and frustration as I realize I'm making mistakes
appreciate the reply (and the other Anon's) by the way, and what you said about finding a way to make it more enjoyable is something I'll keep in mind for sure
I find the Faber-Castell art really appealing, and almost all of the art I save has very bold colors, so me drawing in exclusively black pencil might be why it's not terribly fun at the moment, as well as the subject matter not being wildly interesting to me (fish, birds, mice), so on the side I'll try and draw some stuff that's a bit more relevant to my goals

This is as far as I got on the piece before I pressed too hard on a goof line and killed motivation, but I'm drawing art daily versus drawing art never so I guess I'll post it anyway. Actually went outside to try and find the right ledge to get perspective from and everything, so fucking up and drawing too hard, or that weird thing where you're trying to draw a line and your hand just goes 'lol lmao' and shoots off in the wrong direction, just got me tilt and I pressed too hard on the paper so it's stuck there.

The goal isn't improvement of craft, it's improvement of behavior. OP said it and that's what I'm holding onto. Right now, I'll spend weeks between doodling any my ideas, and that NEEDS to change. If that means drowning /ic/ in retarded permabeg art of fanfics of a /co/ show about gay witches, well that's what's happening. I need to draw more, more than I need to draw well.

I get you had fun, but pure delight won't sustain learning to draw. I recommend having a regimen of studies. It can be very simple. I recommend getting Bridgman and simply making 3 studies out of it per day. Just do it for 30 minutes, then do whatever you want to do.

What you'll find is that if you focus, you go into a flow state, which becomes very delightful. You'll find that you'll get more motivation and confidence to work on your personal projects too.

I want to clarify, I meant to post this in /do art daily/, (on the road now, can’t go back and relink it) because I want to improve my art, BUT I also need to improve my output, and I can’t do both right now. So this is how I want to make that happen. I can improve the art once I have the consistency of actually doing the art down. Right now it’s months between effort and that needs to change first, even if it’s nothing but cringe permabeggery or whatever. I need to like doing art regularly.

Hi anon, it's very important to think of the body as a series of "hard" and "soft" shapes. The hard shapes move independently of each other, and the soft shapes bend and squish and stretch between them. The most important "hard" forms to understand are the 3 forms of the head, rib-cage, and pelvis. The limbs are tubes. Keep each "hard" shape as symmetrical as possible. It's useful, in the beginning, to think of them as boxes, as Bridgman and Hampton teach. Try not to just draw the contours of the figure, then fill in whatever construction you think should be there. Focus on moving the independent hard shapes.

I know these figures are robotic and unnatural, but it'll help you think in the right way later on.

I don't think you have any problems with perspective per se. I think you just need to get more comfortable moving around your basic shapes of the figure. I've recommended it a lot before, but figure drawing is really important. The best is 5-10 minute poses, where you can at least get down a basic construction

>>6576176
I copied all the images in that book. Just 30 minutes a day, and you'll find you'll get through the book really quickly. It automatically shows up in your personal work, because Lauricella repeats the same construction of the hand over and over again, and the sheer repetition reinforces the information

I'll do that from now on as practice. Right now I find a pose I like and try to construct it, but if I should be doing quicker drills to get the hand of things, I'll do that. Thanks, anon.

Gmi! If you need any resource recommendations, I think David Finch's youtube videos on constructing the figure are great. His roadmap is also really great

the hair is really werid looking; the arm right arm is fucked up' the right eye is too far away from the other; head is too wide; and the lineart is not confident .
I suggest just grinding for a while.

Hands are too big or the head is too small. If you put the bottom of your palm on your chin so the hand is covering your face, your middle finger might only just reach your hairline.

looks good, other hand anon here, grain of salt but just remember that there's a rhythm to the first knucles (between the carpals and phalanges) that bends down from the middle knuckle, it's not a straight line.

Opposite question, how do I best tackle the giant tits I really like? The ones that are semi fictional, somewhat saggy yet also very bouncy and round with a lot of weight and warmth?
