Why You Should Copy Anime:

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Imo, if you're aiming for a westernized "realistic" style, you should probably look into old illustrations from the 50s. Black lines tend to decutify, you can suggest form with a more watercolor look

okay i think im getting better at recognizing the subtle details of anime heads, i was studying the weird eyes sockets of takeuchi faces and i realized that eyes are pretty far in the edge of the face or something making the curve towards to ear almost parallel and thats something that i always percived on japanese drawings but never quite understand it, because it changes the shape of the jaw by making the space between these 2 shorter or compact than the usual real proportions, i redrew some faces and i can feel it looks better, anyway thanks for reading my blog.

How do i do this type of rending?
I'm talking about the hue at certain places in the shading.
It's red/yellow/orange and sometimes blue despite the color not being that and it looks nice.

How does it work? I'm assuming i dont do it haphazardly.
How do i know how to do it properly?
Do i just clip a layer on top of random places and add some aribrushing or a gradient?

I felt the same way, nowadays I can draw face from a solid amount of angles quickly. And since I've never stopped using references, even weird angles shouldn't take too long anymore for me. When it comes to anatomy, I've felt like at some points something just *clicked* inside my head and suddenly I grasped how to draw X or Y. Understanding ribcage and pelvis, and how limbs connect to them, felt like a defining moment for me. Now that I can manage proportions better, I'm working on how shadows form (like how muscles in legs affect shadow) and how to make my drawings feel more dynamic.

is easier start with simple anime heads not too detailed specially if you are /beg/, then make your way up to more complex heads, but you need to really hammer it down , don't draw one angle right once and think you are already good you should be able to draw the head from any angle without too much difficulty, then add more complexity to the head and repeat.

>how do I create the illusion of depth in my drawing?

There are several ways to do that both for lineart and rendering.

For lineart: Try having lines that are far away from the camera have thinner lines. This is to mimic atmospheric perspective.
For rendering: Have objects that are further away both shift into the color of the atmosphere and have less contrast.

What is atmospheric perspective? Basically, it's when a ray of light hits several particles in the atmosphere before finally reaching your eye, making those particles visible. There are quintillions and quintillions of these particles between you and the object.

It's why the moon looks orange when close to the horizon, or why mountains look blueish when far away.

If you still don't understand, here's a trick to have you understand it:

If you have a hairy limb, try looking at it from the side and pay attention to the hair. The sides where hair is facing perpendicular to your ray of vision are darker. Pic related.

The atmospheric perspective works the same way. where the hair strands are the particles.

The way light works is actually really simple. Once you understand it, you will be able to untuit how most things will look.

>how does bounce light work?

You're asking very broad questions that can't be answered one way. You just need to remember light is a ray and that it bounces off surfaces. I suggest you watch some indepth videos explaining it on youtube.

>how does kim jung gi draw like that?

Years and years of experience? There is no trick to it. Kim jungi gi had completely mastered anatomy and perspective. He also had a massive visual library. You need to draw and study a lot to be like him.

>should i do more copies of the same drawing to get some mileage?

I mean, are you learning from copying? Copying is usually done to understand the process of other more skiller artists or to train accuracy. I can see from the artwork you posted that your lines are scratchy and unconfident.

Main things concerning me are the left girl's right arm (our pov), I'm not sure if the foreshortening is coming through or if it's too weak, and the right girl's foot that's behind the other foot. 1. Less overusing gradients and airbrushing and instead add more hard and soft edges.

2. Try introducing more colors to make it less one dimensional and have more contrast, like complementary or triadic color schemes.

3. Push your values to give more a sense of 3D, think about the different body parts as simple volumes.

I took a random pic off of pixiv as an example, just be more mindful of these things and you'll see visible improvements quickly.
