Why You Should Copy Anime:

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

You grab a completed piece and trace over the lines except you don't do it mindlessly like a pre-/beg/, you pay attention to the stroke quality and line weight as you go so it matches up to the original's as much as possible. It's a pure technical exercise you can use to train your muscular accuracy and also learn how the original artist used line weight/brush type to achieve a certain feel to his/her art.

Not sure if you are talking about me, but learnign the anatomy of the face/head is very helpful when it comes to stylizing, you don't need to go that hard on it tho, you should be able to understand the major planes like eyesocjkets' nose bridge, cheekbones etc.. these are pretty easy too, once you know that learning what is being stylized is way more easy. i cant draw realistic shit tho.

i.e on the right the chibi looks like 2 balls overlapping, but is actually a bit more complex if you can understand what's being stylized: nose bridge almost flat, small nose , no chin, small cheekbone, eyesockets almost flat. If you know that, drawing that face from diffrent angles is much more easy and it looks more realistic not in a stylized way. the one at the botton is like my default anime/loomis head not really the style i want but just as a default style that is easy to understand and practice but it still follows the real human anatomy, but stylized , it doesnt look that hard/complex but actually theres a lot going on(redline).

I stole the picture in the left(green aired girl), as you can see theres some pretty obvious mistakes there, and theres other heads in the same angle but the style is different but both still follow the basic anatomy shit, you can see the eyesockets form, the way the draw the corner in the left eye to give that depth, curve of the cheekbone and the chin bulge and the angle of the eyes and if you want to go further the orientation and form of the eyelashes, eyebrows distance in relation to the eyes. Those things are more easier to spot/understand with some real anatomy bg.

It looks great. The biggest issues holding your drawing back are the hair not conforming to the skull, the titties flattening due to nipple placement, and calf is too small for the thigh.

If you just fixed the hair so that it fit her head, it immediately looks much better. Right now you are giving her blow-dry 80s hair. I tend to have this problem myself sometimes and have to correct myself. Remember to fit the hair to the skull, it doesn’t float way up over. Now I know you want long ass subway titties but we still need to make sure they have that meaty volume, so remember to place nipples accordingly. Utilize cross-contour lines to get a feel for the tit-form if you must but do them justice! Lastly, minor gripes over the calves not being large enough for the thighs and the hips not being wide enough for thighs either, so keep your eye on the proportions - make things fit proportionally.

Thanks for the help and critique guys. In my defense i drew the tits like that because i want to make her in supposedly turning pose and so the gravity would affect them so it gets sag downwards, sorry that i can't convey it in my drawing properly. While the ayy lmao head is intentional, it just get worse because all the hair supposed to be started in the top where the hair parted in the middle so it's a poofy hairstyle. I have no idea how to draw help lines so here if it helps convey what was i trying to do.

I just use a G-pen at 10 pixels with stabilization turned off. I'm not quite sure why you still haven't figured out the screentone thing yet but but heres a quick showcase of that. One thing to note though, at higher resolutions the screentones will become more and more smoothed out like grey, so experiment with different "frequencies" (this controls the spacing between the dots). Since this is a very low res image I cranked it up all the way to 85. Normally you want something like 60 for anything manga or illustration sized 4000x4000+ pixels

Pic related are the illustration settings I use. I've heard this seems to be good for manga stuff but I've also had frequency issues with tones at times so not sure if I should be setting it to something else.

Your rendering could use some love, maybe try to push the contrast a little harder. Also the ass looks very flat, both in the literal and rendering sense. It looks like the right butt cheek is completely flat and the fabric is hanging over it. The lack of transition and shadows from the left butt cheek to the upper leg is also jarring and makes it look really flat and weird.

np! i'm not really good at explaining, but it's a mix of both anatomy fundies and just really understanding how human fat and clothing works. which of course goes with getting grinding fundies, if that makes sense. one shortcut i learned was just really looking on how clothing interacts with one's own body, and if you make a certain pose, that should be reflected on how it's captured in both anatomy, fat covering the muscles and the clothes around that.

I decided to go for a more conventional size on the hand because it looked comically big once I filled the details in. There are a few other proportion issues that are bothering me as well: I think her head is a little bit too big and the lower part of the right leg (our point of view) is weird but I can't put my finger on it. hey, i'm the anon that told you to do these exercises. First of all, good job with your trace.

In terms of how to get closer to their look, i can tell your pen lacks the sort of texture setting that his has. That sort of rough feeling is something your hands can't do for you, it's similar in idea to drawing linework on rough textured paper, it's the tool that gives you that effect. You will have to experiment with your texture settings or find a pen that gives a similar result. This contributes to the soft feeling.

Second, the use of pure black lines in some areas. I know you're aware of it and I see you've taken note of it. In the painting process you often end up lowering the opacity of your line layer, either the whole layer opacity or adjusting certain parts using a clipping layer or something. This helps with the overall B/W contrast or balance of the image, but it also gives a softer and less crisp feeling to the lineart.

We can see that happening in the eyes, the hair coming over the eyes (bangs), and for lack of better word the areas in the piece that are being made to "glow." I've gone over the image and pointed out the areas that receive adjustment to the lines after the fact. It's important that you see these areas for what they are and recognize that they are not in the original state of the lineart. Just pointing this out if it wasn't already clear, but it's far easier to get these effects after the fact and that's the logical process to take when creating an artwork anyways.

Beyond that, there will always be some difference in feeling because one is painted and one isn't. Their lines are surrounded with values, and that changes slightly how they feel. Do keep that in mind.

At this point you're good to start practicing your painting and rendering. Even starting with grayscale works would be fine. Copies and original work is good. You will understand more about lineart this way.
