Hard to say as we only know / remember the good anime that stood the test of time. It feels like there's more trash and generic designs out there today than forty years ago, but that might as well just be nostalgia and confirmation bias.

I feel like older Anime tended to be more adventurous with their character designs; Spike from Cowboy Bebop or Vance Trigun have very distinct looks to them, and whilst I think newer anime has a more broadly appealing style, I think the character designs have become far more bland - to the point where you can mix characters up.

Of course there are examples to the contrary (spy x family for example), but I'm speaking in a general sense.

Love or hate it, SAO is one of the IPs that defined the 10s. It came out at the right time when Oculus was just getting started, stealing dotHack's years of built up thunder.

'80s anime was the best, hands down. Akira, HNK, Venus Wars, Macross, Megazone 23, Robot Carnival, Project A-Ko, Dirty Pair, Wings of Honneamise...I could go on. Best designs, all hand-drawn, no clashing CGI animation, plenty of variety/experimentation, best music.
