Take the indirect pill. The imprimatura pill and the grisaille pill. You need to be spending hours every day mixing different shades of yellow ochre and burnt umber. You need to be glazemaxxing. You need to be mixing your own batches of lead white and contaminating water sources near your studio. You need to laugh at alla prima painters. You need to take the flemish underpainting pill. The lead ground pill. You need to drink turpentine

the texture is really nice, the brushstrokes are really nice, the drawing is very accomplished, but compositionally this is mediocre. It's basically two white circles on a red background. You need to clearly define what the shapes and composition are, and I feel like you would've accomplished that just by doing a full figure of one of them, rather than two disparate portraits on one piece of paper. An interesting outline is sometimes all you need to make a composition.

they're probably just annoyed that you spent all this time blocking in shadows. constructoid habits aren't helpful, you need to grasp the concept of the art object better.

"Works in progress" technically don't exist, the drawing at the end is what the art object is. It doesn't matter if you "blocked in" things or "constructed things" and meant to "build them up later". These concepts are irrelevant in a modernist sense. Your drawing exists in the style it is when you stop drawing it.

Please if someone could remind me the name of that painter who really painstakingly measured nude figures. I cannot fucking remember his name it was like Elon Musk or something.

Idk I feel like an older artist that really illustrates this point is Alberto Giacometti. Do you see how this painting by him looks like "measurements" and nothing more. Like this would be the preporatory underpainting for something more complex, but it wasn't. This was the completed painting in the style he wanted. The measurements themselves were the art. That in and of itself is a modernist concept for a style (try to remember that technically modernism started with Michelangelo 600 years ago, "pre-modernism" is basically like illuminated manuscripts and stuff like that that was more communicative than strictly artistic).

Just try to keep in mind that what your drawing looks like at the end is exactly in a literal sense what it looks like, and it's style is already manifested. Once you grasp that concept you'll have an easier time working from the figure. The measurements, whatever they are, are part of your style.

>>6547937
For the most part, I blend my colours without any medium by working quickly which is 95% of the time. I use a medium when the paint begins to feel too dry on the canvas. I apply the medium on my brush and then I blend the required colours that are already on the canvas. I use medium more often for larger areas like the hip in my painting for example.
I need to stress that I prefer blending my colours without a medium, I only use it as a last resort.

Other than blending, I also use medium to "water down" the paint so that it'll cover more area when needed, and also use it to make the paint translucent for things like lace clothing.

>> No.6548748

I think ur supposed to use the side of it? Idk, I think drawing directly down with a nib is only what you do if you’re stippling, I think otherwise it’s supposed to kind of like a brush in terms of how you press it against the page. I was watching a video about ceremonial masks in different cultures, and they covered a bit about Balinese masks. The manic expressions and chaotic colors of those masks are strangely compelling, so I thought, what would it be like to come across something like that in a mundane context? So I used a very restricted palette for the environment, to emphasize the strangeness of the encounter with this figure.

For gouache, the best advice I can give is to control the amount of water in your brush and paint. That's the most important thing. For this one I worked on large areas of it in a drybrush style. Sometimes I work a bit thicker. I'll use it in a watercolor style, thin and wet, sometimes to block in areas of the image early on, but after that you'll want to work much dryer, especially if you're painting over other layers of gouache, because you will reactivate them, inevitably. Speaking of which, I'm trying to avoid painting too many layers of gouache lately, because they keep turning into mud on me. If I need to change something on a part of the painting now, I'll probably just wipe away the old layers rather than trying to paint over them. If you do need to layer paint, let the old layer dry. Just walk away and do something else. It won't take that long.

That's pretty much all the advice I have on gouache. Each painting is still a learning experience for me, so I can't say much more.

Really discouraging figure drawing session. How do you deal with Art Funk? Intellectually I know my feelings aren't important, and I try to just push them to the side and fix what's wrong with my drawing. Really nice. Maybe you could push the contrast b/t light and shade further in the tip of the nose to bring it out more?
The cast shadow covering her left eye is also lighter in tone than the shadow covering her right eye; I would go darker in the shadows of the left side of her face to have it match the values in the right side. Especially the edge/contour of the cast shadow below the eye and on the cheek I would bring out more.
I would also have a darker contour on the chin to bring it out from the neck, but maybe that’s more my preference than a critique..

If that's a problem don't start with a blank canvas. Make a collage of images you'd like to reference and use that as a starting point.

Just laugh about it and move on.

There used to be a notion handled by the actual fathers of Western ethics called "beauty in itself", whose appreciation was (according to them ofc), a trait of the best men.

A sunset is more more beautiful (in that sense) than a pile of feces, and there's nothing wrong with that. A sensible woman caring about herself is more beautiful than a hairy fat angry one, and there's nothing wrong with that.

imagine paying to go to a place where crabs talk about your art not catering to their degenerate tastes, kek. i would unironically call them niggers and get expelled immediately. i had to leave university after they mandated the vaccine. best thing that ever happened

none of the women i draw have tattoos.
none of them think abortions are good.
none of them support immigration.
none of them have sex outside of marriage.
none of them are atheists.
none of them are obese from seed oils.
none of them have political opinions because they know it's not their place.
how bout dat. that's my "default mode". i am not drawing your obese modern abominations and i hate the antichrist. welcome to my default mode

if you don't want to waste paint, paint in monotone. white + raw umber is good. do not avoid painting if you want to be a better painting. you must be a proficient draftsman but painting is a different skill set with, frankly, a lot more going on (especially in oils)

Those are sketches?
Fuck.. I'd consider those finished works, I think they're great!. I guess the line is blurred. I was thinking more like how people draw a bunch of tiny things, figures, hands, and so on, on the same paper, like doodles.

I think you're right, I'm avoiding just painting through overthinking. I need to paint to be better at painting, no amount of tutorials will change that. I work in Gouache. I overthink a lot, lately it's been about what is appropriate to paint, like I somehow need to chose a subject that is good enough and has wide appeal, not one I'd like to paint, like I need to stick to painting what I see others do on IG, twitter and so on. It's weird. Also thinking too much what people will think of my art, instead of just painting what I want, uploading those pieces I'm happy with and then just not care. Many people draw strange things, why can't I indulge my interest in non-classic subjects. I can, I guess this is just a form of procrastination.

Has anyone taken any of Nathan Fowkes painting courses before? I'm just about to start his landscape sketching course to get more comfortable with gouache and, well, landscapes, but I was curious if anyone had taken any of his other courses before.

It seems to remind a lot of people of Zelda, but always a different aspect/game from it.
