If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Hello, I have the problem of having drawn in my shitty art style for years to the point that I find it difficult drawing from life properly. Any tips? yeah i have 3 tips

take a bigger piece of paper and use these vanishing points for WHOLE item, not bottom

also use a ruler for horizon and lines leading to vanishing points because you obviously can't freehand it, no worries it'll be ok

draw them fucking straight lines with whole arm, and try changing drawing position/grip because writing grip is for dinner table tier fine details or tablet without display

good luck

Drop and give me 20 ellipses in various perspectives, soldier!

But seriously. A front facing circle can be easily squared. This square will follow the same rules of perspective like any other and you can use it to give yourself indicators of how fast the ellipse would have to bend. Since the middle of the square has to touch the circles edge, said square can be used to draw an ellipse in any perspective. You could try drawing 2 vanishing points and making various squares with ellipses inside of them. Expand the ellipse to make a cylinder or cone.

Also the further up you go, it seems like you stop relying on the vanishing points as much. Having the vanishing point so close and a figure this large makes the perspective distorted and may be fucking with your brain.

im having somewhat difficult time understanding shading colors in graphite, especially in darker areas. for example in this image the darker edges of the butterfly. within my drawing the darker areas are very dark - there's no depth to dark, but in this image you can distinctively see that within the dark there are some lighter dark but still dark. is it just be move consistent in shading and just shade lighter before covering the darkest areas?

TAKE THAT! MY OWN COOL MANGA SCENE! You like it?

But, how could I improve the scene I wonder? Besides shading, I'll do that later. Maybe centering the girl more.
I have no clue how to do a background when it's already filled to the brim with characters, I think it would lose all clarity.
The girl and the robot are as well drawn as they can be.
Hmm. Yeah how could this be better?
At any rate I'm content with this style, I could do like 20 pages like this, call it a chapter and publish it somewhere.. probably WordPress since this definitely isn't meeting Webtoons standards.

I'm at the point where Loomis has you draw stick men, so basically gestures right? Burr you build them up. So he has 24 to copy and wants your to invent your own, can it 36 total. Ok so mine definitely are not close to the example, I'm guessing you durdle gesture drawings until it clicks before moving on? I did about 50 and they are still stiffer than me after a day of nofap. Proportions got better at least, not passable or worthy of clothing, but better. So I'm guessing this is similar to the drawabox 250 boxes/cylinders/ellipses? Just do em until you force open the neural pathways?

>> No.6541655

The biggest two I could think of is how easy digital makes it to trace, and smoothing, because it makes sure you never learn how to move your arm properly. Most other things are just tools that speed up the process - some anons here will tell you using layers is cheating but that's the reality of traditional vs. digital.

Any tips on how to learn lighting / shading?

I've just started, I've been afraid to start but am finally throwing myself into it. Any recommendations on where to start? Or what materials helped you learn?

I still have a really hard time judging what planes get light, and which don't and to what degree they do. I have an idea of the forms in my head, but when I go to add light, I like blank out.

Break things down into construction / 3d shapes. You try and do that with the hands I can see with the balls. But for everything else it just seems like squares.

Use simple, 3d, cubes, spheres, and cylinders, and get proper proportions rather than this trying to mesh together construction and symbol drawing. It'll do better for you in the long run. Keep at it buddy.

Try this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dqGkHWC5IU
There is a lot of theory on what goes on with light in this video. First experiment with making a plane-sphere as in the video, make the lighting obvious and try to get it correct how the shading changes from lightest to darkest, how the shadow falls. Then try to make a tendon like in the vid. Making a figure have shading is this, but applied on more planes and objects.

Based pen on paper exercises. While the lines are still a bit messy, you're not chicken scratching. Keep up with that and you'll see great gains in no time. You could draw lightly with your black pen and then go over it with a different color defining the "true" contour of your drawing to work on getting even better control of your lines and shapes.

very good! To be honest objects in great distance often are blurry due to how light works and it adds in extra depth if you make closer object sharper in comparison. My limited painintg experience taught me you need at least two brushes: one fuzzy for textures and such and one small and sharp for details and edges. So for example if you want that mountain on the left sharp you need to pick up the yellow background sky and go all around it with small hard round brush. It will pop out the contour and produce sharp edge.

>blurry and haphazard
I was going to say increase contrast and use more hard edges if it feels that way to you. your mesas have hard edges around the silhouette, and your horizon line is mostly hard, but nothing else feels as defined. this anon seems to have bumped the contrast (and saturation), and it seems somewhat improved in those regards even without edge work >>6543287 . it feels scrubbed in and your foreground features are kinda undeveloped. whatever that speckled brush you're using isn't doing you any favors, either.

it's good, though, anon. it especially reads well from the thumbnail, which means you got the big stuff right imo.

you might find john j park's and jordan grimmer's environment stuff interesting. I don't do environments as much as I should but I refer to them whenever I do for insights or technical ideas. they're more concepty than painterly but they're really good

By the way, what is the full story of this pic. I assume the girl is a slave of sorts and the two men are either guards or slavers.

The minotaur seems to have happened to just be there and decided to take the girl as a prize.

Seeing how she has muscles she can use a sword at least which she is reaching for.

how the hell was this base color put down?
I was trying to learn rendering and I was trying to do https://lunarmimi.net/tutorials/4-steps-painting-wet-shirt/ going along w/ it but I realized that the bast skin layer isn't a simple bucket fill because the color would jitter around, but it also isnt a simple gradient because it's not smooth, and if I randomly click around with a 0 tolerance bucket fill I get these patterns
is this some weird brush/ texture effect?

nice! dogged work ethic, fren. you're motivating me to do work harder tbqh.

this one reads pretty good. are you intending these to be studies or finished pieces? what are you intending to get out of these? are you using photo reference?

I think your core fundamentals and design ideas are much better than your final result shows, which might be why you're frustrated. this one seems cleaner than your last one (your last one was good, tho), but to me it seems like the smaller I view them both, the better they read. what do you think?

I think this is largely a textural issue. you get some really cool value design that reads well, but you detract from your painting in the final stages a bit with that drippy speckle brush and the streaky pastel looking brush. the speckles create little areas of sharp contrast when your overall painting isn't very sharp contrast, so they look a little artificial and out of place. the shadow side of that peak is an example (black dots), and the left side of your monument valley piece was similar. the speckles also sorta overrun edges in places, compromising your forms; you can do that in some places, but if you do it everywhere, the eye doesn't know where to focus. I think the reason exaggerating the contrast made it look better was partly because it deemphasized the texture a bit. how do you feel about it?

you might not like the bottom because of your overall composition. it's a sort of reduplicated shape relative to your peak, but at the edge of the composition, taking away from your big focal point a bit.

good stuff, though, anon. you're gmi if you keep it up. don't take me too seriously btw, I'm just a tipsy retard on the internet.

Really nice work. Would any of you be interested in paid work creating artwork for a tabletop rpg I'm developing? I'm looking for an artist to create supporting material for a dark age horror investigation game. This would include things like creating art for the pdf handbook, character token art, maybe some gridded maps, and some background images that we could use in a video trailer of the game.

Pretty small budget as this is self-funded but I'm confident something will come of it.

Keep going as is as my critique is mostly about structural things that would be a waste of time to redo.
Head is too small for the body. Torso is a bit too elongated and looks like it has a second stomach area. The curvature is accentuating this. There would be 3 main planes where a human to take a pose like this. Rib cage, groin/lower stomach and a upper stomach. In your picture it looks like the ribs are going downward way too far and the "middle stomach" is far too extended and is making 2 planes where it should be 1.

>>6543715
The little character looks like she should be elevated on a table or a higher plane. Otherwise it seems like the catgirl isn't standing on the same ground level as the little one.

why everything is so wobbly. can you draw normal sphere and cylinder? if not then learn this first.
it doesn't matter because you have deeper issues bit on your picture cylinder and sphere have about same height but one shadow is much longer -there no reason for this to happen in this scenario.

I've got some cool looking reference books, manga oriented stuff but full of photos of (Japanese, obv) people doing random things. Jumping, running, one book on hands, animal stuff (like equestrian things, etc), some sports, one for medieval weapons. Can these be brought to a printing shop, deconstructed, laminated, and ring bound? Was going to scan them in for /ic/'s reference torrent but don't want to destroy them in the process. I figured I'd ask the group that might have some foreknowledge before going to the salt off the earth printer guy and handing off my autism manuals full of Japanese school girls twirling around horses and halberds for nothing.

Since her arm looks "weirdly fat" in the reference anyway it's probably smarter to reduce the curvature caused by pushing the arm against her legs? That is, if I can't pull it off.

You want to make sure your values leads the viewers eye to what you want it to. In your black and white piece, it's mostly flat, but in the pic on the right all the attention goes to the dark mirror/painting, window, and duster hand.

I'd say it's important to learn how lighting works and then how you need to apply it to make your pics look more interesting. Proko's youtube channel has stuff on this.

also, the area below the left elbow needs to be a lot darker. the left thigh currently looks way thicker because of that?

Appreciate the write-up. Definitely think you're correct about the speckles contrast throwing things off, didn't realize that at all. For me it was just that the top sort of seemed to work in a rough way, but looking at the bottom, specifically the craggy inlet, it's just messy. But I can rework that bit at least. My goal is mostly just a sketch, or at least to be getting better results in less time. Thanks again, what's yer drink dude?

Anons, can I get some insights in this art?

In her legs, why there is this darker line dividing the shadow and the light, but in the other areas of the draw there isn't? I imagine this is the terminator line. I understand it makes the legs more juicy, but why other areas like her arms, face, hair, the cat, etc... Do not have this effect of a darker line dividing it?

Is there some light/shadow rule here that can be used to guide your decision, or it is just a stylistic choice?

Looks good but needs some improvement. Think about the shapes you're representing and where they would be overlapping, it looks like you're drawing lines before you consider the forms.
Anyways you should keep practicing each lesson even after moving on to the newer ones, they will build on each other.

It's easy because you're not following the instructions in the book, and it's boring because you kinda suck at it desu. You should be drawing the boxes "tumbling through space", i.e. from various angles. Do it how it looks on the page, but don't copy the lines of the drawing directly. (We don't copy, we analyze)

is there a certain way to use halftone or do you just use it wherever you think is cool? does it have “rules” kinda like hatching?

>> No.6544695

My teacher yesterday helped me to just draw even if it looks bad
He said "Don't be afraid of getting things dirty. Just draw, sketch, doodle, whatever. It's like learning how to drive, you need to do it a lot and it becomes something you can just do." or something along those lines, it really clicked for me when he brought up driving
We did some exercises of listening to songs of various lengths and doodling as much stuff as possible on a page before the song ended, that exercise really changed my mindset, it's so much easier to just draw stuff now
Just wanted to share, that was really nice

i dont know how im supposed to learn shading. everyone talks about, everyone knows how to do it, its so critical to drawing and yet i have no clue and also cant find anything that can give me a clear idea what im doing.

if there is a clear light source that makes shading a bit easier, but what if there is no light source? im just supposed to shade at random?

Well, traditionally you'd use it when printing something, because a black and white dot pattern is much cheaper than forcing the printer to get grey ink. Sometimes it's also used to mimic a print. Maybe you want to follow the style of printed cartoons, even if you only plan to publish digitally.
The guy who drew this apple didn't have any reasons like that, and only used it because hey, his drawing software came with the halftone brushes so he might as well.
