the shoulders don't feel like they're connecting to the torso properly and the foreshortening (or lack thereof) is causing the torso to appear extremely elongated. the arms being too thin are fine because of the cybernetics or robotics or whatever but it only exaggerates the absurdly long torso effect. the eyes also are too big even for anime because you drew them as if they were meant to be looked at dead-on and then just dropped extra-fluffy eyelashes over them and called it a day.

I remember once having a crackhead come up to me when I was trying to draw a statue in an empty city courtyard so I think I'll go and draw some horses in a field or something

After 5 months I finally gave in and installed Stable Diffussion to help generate thumbnails for poses and composition because it's my weakness, since it can be used completely offline without supporting anyone via subscriptions it's ethically a gray area I guess. It took me a few hours of learning and now I have some very nice thumbnails I can use as reference, I know my next drawings will be significantly better (at least the composition and poses) because of them, but it's fucking with my head. I have a few generated pictures that I really like and would like to redraw them myself, but I catch myself thinking "what's the use redrawing it, if it's already drawn, will yours be better?" and when I look at social media, I scroll past my feed without stopping to look at the art of my favorite artists since I've seen hundreds or thousands of AI generations in the past three days and art I loved doesn't impress me so much anymore because I'm so oversaturated at the moment and everything lost its value in my eyes. It's a really weird feeling, infinite poses and compositions are amazing but it really changes your perception man

I could say it's confidence, I could say it's being distracted in cycles of consumption and addiction, which is true.
But I think the root cause is my ego. I could be so happy drawing 12 hours a day in my comfort zone, just doing stuff I know. But when I try to do something else, something worthwhile, my ego hates that I can't do it as well as others and certainly not as quickly, and that I have to properly study how to do things.
My ego says "oh this is too hard I can't take it let's just go and get some quick dopamine with video games or something, anything but this pain" or "you did this better a year ago you may as well just give up". My ego is actively ruining my chances of being better, I think it needs to fuck off so I can actually learn and do things I've not spent hundreds of hours doing already. It's trying to protect itself but it's really destroying it's host.

you guys are my brothers in arms, my comrades against the great enemy of responsibility. I do not know you, but I respect each and every one of you for having the strength to take each day. You look to the future and see hope. I feel an unhealthy and somewhat unearned elitism from doing /dad/, I can say to people "I have proof I drew every day". There is nothing else in my life more consistent than this and nothing more beautiful than seeing strangers keep going. I am eternally saddened by the names I remember who no longer post, I miss them terribly.

I only just started drawing again, picked up a pencil and pad but have a tablet too (that's just a hassle to use so I don't use it much).

"I wanna draw something good today" think about that and break it down, what is good? You look at other stuff and see that it's good, what are they doing that you are not? Write down your idea, put the thoughts on paper in their fullness and attempt to match that with your drawing. Maybe it'll help. Compartmentalise, like you're shopping for your perfect drawing and picking up all the elements from the shelves as you go. That's what I should do.

You have a conscience that keeps you awake at night thinking "oh why haven't I done this" or "I should have said this" "I want to talk to that person" because our brains are so adapted to this universal truth, we know it instinctively. You can apply this to yourself. You know what you have to do, step outside of yourself and do it.
Bad things, evil, bullies, they are like darkness. Shine a light of goodness upon it and it floats away. Depression, fear, they all fade away once you begin to take all the steps you can to do good things, no matter how small.
Van Gogh did beautiful paintings, not because his life was full of pain and suffering, but in spite of that. The only thing he enjoyed was painting, it shone light where there was darkness. You do not need sadness, suffering or edginess in order to be an artist, in fact it's antithetical to what you want.
You don't get a choice, you act and think by principles or you aren't thinking at all. You do good things, you be good to one another that is the only way you make progress. When you think of something nice to say, something that simply MUST be said, a constructive and helpful criticism, a compliment to push them further. You MUST say it. You'll be happier, they'll be happier, the work will be better as a result. There isn't a decision. You must be nice, or else you are cosmically cringe and eternally ngmi at your core. To yourself too, lying to yourself is not goodness.

In a ideal world you'd do good and everyone's happy. unfortunately in the real world you have to be very careful how you balance your actions.

If you pay attention, it's those who are in the middle who thrive the longest. Very good people get snuffed early or get the short straw, same as overly evil ones.

The real challenge is that consequences from a good action can lead to very bad outcomes, and sometimes good things can be born from evil.
Most people don't think enough about these things, and it's a big reason the world todays is turning to shit. Ideals can elevate as much as they can destroy.

Life is like a song, you need highs and lows in the right sequence for a melody to arise.
Doing good is not enough, sometimes you have to be harsh and let others learn their lessons, so that they can walk with their legs. Sometimes you should not be good. Sometimes you should be selfish.

Is there another word for this that isn't 'ego'? I'm that guy and I'd say it's wrapped up in the ego. Like it's about where you think you are in your head, the idea of how good you are in la la land -this fake ideal of yourself that doesn't exist-, and then it doesn't match up. Pride is ego but this isn't exactly pride, and your ego is deeper than just pride.
It's your ego running away from reality and dreaming up a world in which you can do anything and are the amazing artist you should be (I mean you've done so many studies! you've been drawing for so long you should be this amazing artist!) so you can "win", and so you meet reality (in which everyone is capable of producing dogshit art if they don't think or practice) and your whole formulation of the world shatters to the point of being able to even understand what comes next. "I should be better than this, and I'm not so I'll stop forever" is your ego destroying your system of logic to roleplay as someone you're not so it can feel good. It's good practice to have it shatter in front of you and then move on and keep going. You're telling your ego to fuck off, you're the boss, you CAN do anything, but that anything is in the here and now and not some hypothetical or the past.
I've felt that "look back at your life and feel like nothing you've done has been worth anything and that you should kill yourself immediately" so fucking hard and that is 10000% your pure unearned ego talking. It might even actually push you to suicide if you don't keep going and face it, shatter it with a fucking huge hammer of righteousness, study, and application of study.
