Draw figures everyday in February. Some of us are trying to draw 280 figures by the end of the month.

Post your figure drawings here everyday and share resources

>>6523438
Well when you put it that way… most of your time would be spent on 20min drawings as opposed to 30s which takes 1/40 of the time… ha ha

>>6523458
Figure drawing and gesture are hard to distinguish. Lots of figure drawing ends up very stiff because the poses can be stiff, to get nice dynamic figures and gesture you have to hunt for the right poses to copy. Yoga poses, volleyball girls, figure skaters, and ballerinas are really good for gesture. Also, copying anime action scenes frame by frame is helpful.

Some of the sites like quick poses and line of action have the worst / stiffest / most static / awkward poses ive ever seen. I really hate drawing from those sets, and will only do it begrudgingly if i am drawing along with some other anons.

Also, you can gesture just about anything, it doesnt have to be a figure.

you can do like me and ignore faces completely lololol
>>6524581
>Even if I allowed myself more time on each figure, they would still be riddled with glaring issues at the end of it.
i find that's the whole point of doing this. figure drawing shows you clearly what's your weakest point and then you're allowed to tackle that specifically. is it construction, flow, balance; are the heads fucked up; or is it something more concrete like the back muscles or the shape of the feet; it's all in front of you. see it more as an opportunity rather than a deturrent anon.
>>6524839
>stupid question incoming
how do i know if i'm doing this right?
not stupid at all anon, that's a very important question.
you know you're doing it right if it's fulfilling your goal. your goal with this might be to get you to draw at all, it might be to become more confident with your strokes or maybe you just want to draw cool poses.
>should i overlay the reference over my drawing and check what's wrong?
if you're trying to accurately replicate a pose, if that's your goal then i think that's a way to check if you're doing it right.

Thanks v much. Yeah, If I’m having trouble understanding a shape, being able to quickly block it in with a big brush and then carve out the lines can be very helpful.
Big brush also forces you to simplify, can’t get caught up noodling in one spot for too long cus it all goes to black. Sped up my drawing process quite a bit as a result

Krita.
The SK-V1 brushes here:

I used the charcoal ones, the ones with the dark blue pencil icons. There's a v2 but I haven't tried those yet.
The creator explains how to use them in this video:

These ones are good too.

The paper texture is from Envato - White Vintage Paper Textures. I used 14.jpg

its more like gesture, the first step to drawing a figure.
the figure in the bottom right looks kinda stiff because the curve that goes from the neck to the hips repeat it self on the thinghs and screw up the rythm. which is funny because you did it right on the drawing from the left

Are you sad that we are all in here having fun drawing in this thread? You can join us. Don’t be shy. You probably think you suck at drawing and you’re too scared to post with us because you’re afraid we will make fun of you.

Don’t worry anon, this is a safe space for people who draw.

I'm leaning towards mechanical since I like it (and it handles similarly to digital/pen) but a lot of people seem to encourage overhand grip for that kind of work so should I use a 2mm clutch instead? Probably doesn't matter I guess.

thank you anon,9 days late answer. looking back i think it came down to taking my time with each pose, finding how much time i usually take per figure which turns out is ~15min per pose for me; paying attention to what the pose is doing, which for me often turns out as a kind of copy...paying attention to my lines, im not trying to rush anything and im trying to make it clean, and finally just getting a lot of practice in, lots of drawing
>>6562904
very kind words anon, thank. i take usually 15min per pose, that's just the tendency as i haven't timed any of my poses for this figuary. the most course course i've taken for figures is Deconstructed by viktor kalvachev and i think it's preetty nice so i'd recommend that. i also remembered this vid which i find useful

all the rules are made up, none of them are of COMPLETE necessity to draw the figure at all. loomis, vilppu, bridgman, the reilly method, the force method, they all stick around just because they utilize a particular 'consistent' process and produce a particular result often linked to an 'objective' parameter: proportions, likeness, anatomy... but the thing is: you really dont need them to fucking draw if you dont want to use them. There's a lot of value to obtain from those rules, because people dont talk about them and classes about those methods aren't taught for no reason.
My point is: choose one you like and run with it. Assuming you're >>6563756 you clearly aren't interested in
>this soul searching mystical bullshit
so don't think about it too much and start drawing. Just know that if you end up sticking to a method you can, at any point in time, drop it and do whatever you want, because what matters at the end of the day is you enjoying the process and further in the future enjoying the result. good luck

When you do gestures and quick sketches, I suggest taking them to the basic forms phase. If you're just starting out, feel free to use very geometric forms, straight cylinders and boxes if you have to, but do draw forms. Don't just etch around the contours of the figure. With forms, focus on proportions, especially the thicknesses of forms. I suggest copying from Morpho: Simplified forms, or "how to draw comics the marvel way", to learn about basic forms

y'know, the usual. doing lots of figure drawing. assuming you're already doing that, lately I went through a bit of a block, I think. by not actually figure drawing. I've been filling up pages at the start of each drawing session with all flowy shapes and that. by abstracting the shapes I like out of figure drawing, I think it forced me to interrogate why I choose the shapes I do, and if I even like the shapes I use. you kind of let intuition take over for a second and then either reward yourself for drawing a line or shape you like, or admonish yourself if you draw something bad. kind of like natural selection for shapes you want to keep, and the bad shapes get culled.
then when I come to do figure drawing, I find I spot shapes I like much easier and make sure to try and get them down and then try and remember them for when I'm ideating again.

anyway, I've been finding that pretty useful. kinda hyper-specific and not something I've been doing for too long. and I don't know why I'm drawn to such jizzy shapes...

how much figure drawing do you do per day? (1 hour, 2 hours?) Also, love your shapes man, reminds me of Hokusai and that whole Asian art look

i use a softround brush with opacity, density and size set to pressure with varying curves so that i dont hate it. i really think that finding a brush that doesnt feel weird as fuck comes down to messing with the curves of pressure until it feels somewhat good

i have stab set to like 2 out of 100 on CSP.. i'm not sure if it's doing anything but it's there. my handle is @AltyD_ on twitter, though none of this figure drawing stuff is posted there. you'll find some sketches of no-nosed girls and coom stuff if that still interests you

thanks very much, never studied hokusai, but certainly admire his art. got a cool t shirt with a bunch of his figure drawings on it.

I maybe draw between 5 and 8 hours a day depending on how free I am. and that's pretty much all stuff geared towards figure drawing. figures from ref, from imagination, anatomy study, studying artists I like who draw good figures. depends on the day how much of each of those I'll do. like today I only drew one figure from ref.

>>6579745
the body is derived from the jizz, makes sense that the essence of drawing the figure would be found in the jizz

past couple days it feels like I'm starting to leverage what anatomical knowledge and sense of form I have to draw shadow shapes. kind of been bullshitting them until now, i realise.

Is this a decent way to get started with figure drawing or should I be focusing more on gesture and traditional construction? I just did these off of 2 minute poses

Not too bad of a start for a beginner, mine were worse. I found gesture drawing more fun. I would recommend the LoveLifeDrawing YouTube channel.

You could also try an approach like Vilppu's or Michael Hampton's which uses gesture and construction. You've gotta experiment a bit and find instructors you like.

Thanks anon, yeah I usually do Hampton's style for gesture but I was trying that to capture the general contour a little more. I'm just starting on Hampton's book so I'm not really into his construction yet.

Here's some I did today, seems like this is helping me grasp foreshortening better too

I feel like I'm doing this really wrong but I don't know what.
90 secs are really too short for adding shades / some sort of hatching.

Is this the good path or not?
