Draw figures everyday in February. I’m going to try to draw 280 figures by the end of the month.

Post your figure drawings here everyday and dump your resources: croquis videos, gesdraws, pose packs, etc

Hey nice one! Was just about to start figure drawing and was looking for that deleted thread. Ill post my stuff here later tonight. Happy figure drawing, anons

Also, for resources, an anon posted these in a thread a while back and people seem to get some use out of them. So if you don’t have these already bookmarked, they’re pretty good:
https://www.imagefap.com/organizer/385251/Female-anatomy-for-artist
https://www.imagefap.com/organizer/294745/Perfect-Gymnasts

I’ll add that the whole of imagefap is a great resource for figure drawing, men and women, if you’re willing to wade through some tough looking images.

yeah ik i suck but here i am. this took me longer than i'd like to admit. but i couldn't for the life of me figure out the right foot. im also pretty happy with the hand considering i have less than 2 hours drawn in hands and it was a weird angle. the other hand was impossible she was doing ninjutsu shit with her fingers

also i pretty much start out with an oval/egg for the torso in every drawing. but where exactly is the bottom of the egg? i think they're the ribs/belly button for me which can't be right.

I also have no clue what my canvas size should be. Sometimes I feel like I draw too small/big so I just made a huge canvas. will post ref next, got it from >>6505994

well if you really are 'mindlessly' copying reference images then that'll certainly impede your growth. it can be tough to do for long stretches of time, but really trying to be 100% present helps a lot.
I've stopped having tv/youtube on in the background or listening to music while drawing. feel like I'm taking in information a lot easier now. really has helped me a lot.
maybe a "no shit" rec that you and lots of other anons do, but after 2 years of always having something on in the background distracting me, it was a hard habit to shake. well worth it though.
now I just have 'cozy fireplace with crackling sounds' on so I don't have to go 100% cold turkey.

>>6506412
>also i pretty much start out with an oval/egg for the torso in every drawing. but where exactly is the bottom of the egg? i think they're the ribs/belly button for me which can't be right.
not sure I fully understand what you think 'can't be right' but a oval for the ribcage is a good way to start a figure drawing

i wasn't sure if it ended near the pelvis area or not, or if that would make the torso easier than if I end it at the rib cage

>> No.6506482

>>6506446
gotcha. forgive me if you know all this, but just so we're on the same page:
not sure what resources you're using to study with but they should cover thinking about the figure in terms of it's component 3d 'forms', i.e. the ribcage, pelvis, head, two forms for each arm and leg, hands and feet. this is a 'constructive' approach to figure drawing that has you orient these 3d forms on the page in positions corresponding to what you see in the reference. it feels basically the same as posing an action man as you get better at drawing 3d objects (boxes, spheres, basic perspective).
so anyway, all that is a long way to set up that when I say 'an oval for the ribcage', try to visualise the ribcage in the figure you're drawing and mark that down as an oval on the page, and do something similar for all the forms in the figure. loomis and hampton and vilppu can all teach you what shapes you can use.

>>6506442
fair enough, whatever works for you.
but I'll say that I felt much the same way. the first couple of days drawing in silence were like scraping nails across a chalk board. but after not too long a clarity set in and I'm able to focus a lot better now. I'm not able to overthink in the silence because all of my attention is turned to the task of drawing (when all is going well).
so it went: 50% drawing, 50% yt/music, 0% bullshit thoughts
to: 50% drawing, 50% bullshit thoughts
to: 100% drawing, 0% bullshit thoughts
but the process of getting to that point takes time, is painful and I'm not always there, you have to stay vigilant and keep on yourself to focus on the drawing at hand. it's tough! but when you're 100% in that zone, like a surfer in the tube like in surfs up, nothing feels better.

don't know your particular circumstance, maybe you've got adhd or what have you, but I can say for me it was probably a simple case of frying my brain with constant stimulation. checking the phone first thing when you wake up etc..

I might be missing something but I googled croquis and it seems to be a method/way of drawing, is there a specific reference site/set with the same name that you're referring to? I'm asking about the references because they seem to be of athletic females which is one of the things I enjoy drawing most and I've yet to find reference sets that feature them (I usually draw from quickposes.com or sketchdaily.com and those websites have a ton of different mixed models)

I was referring to Croquis Cafe
they're one of if not the biggest names in online figure drawing which is why people like me just shorten it to simple "croquis" :^)

i find doing a single much longer pose paying attention to proportions and structure and then doing shorter ones is really helpful for developing shortcuts and visual library.

that's because those are two different things and they dont feed off each other as much as you'd think. you have to practice both separately if that's what you want.

u doing gud bro, i saw the ref and in all fairness those are some fucked up hand poses. about the bottom of the oval thing it changes depending on the pose, i think eyeballing it for now from reference is fine. And dont worry about the canvas size, do what's most comfortable.

I’m still fucking with it, im going to try to radially hatch. But the hatching vs the lighting direction does make a difference. I dont know why. It’s like do you hatch to show form or to show light gradient or to indicate direction? Who knew lines could be overloaded with so much information.

Yes, but you need to be able to understand each part of the body like a 3d form. Not perfectly, just in simple terms. See picrel. If you can master each isolated part of the figure, then you can put those pieces of the figure together without ever needing to reference a photo. It’s like a 3d model in your mind.

I would recommend starting with just changing a limb or two to start with. You can also draw a reference from a different angle. Re-drawing a figure from memory helps too. Redrawing something you just drew shows you what you need to work on.

>> No.6512713

>>6512542
Getting a full figure down quickly helps. Once you can see the whole figure, it's easier to notice what is off. With less strokes on the page it's easier to fix the mistakes too. With a gesture drawing approach likes Glenn Vilppus, about 30 seconds is enough to get the major masses and limbs down. At that point I just check that the hips are at about halfway of the length of the figure and visually measure that it's around 7 to 8 heads tall, that's usually enough. For longer drawings or harder poses, more time is spent double checking stuff. You may find you keep making the same proportional mistakes, so that's something you can study and be on the lookout for.
A lot of the time you have to deal with foreshortened limbs and overlapping forms so it takes a lot of practice. There is also choosing what to exaggerate or idealize. For example, you can make the legs longer and it will usually look better, so when in doubt you can make them a bit longer.

>It’s like do you hatch to show form or to show light gradient or to indicate direction?
that's the thing, all of those are options laid out for you to try. in my opinion hatching to show what's in shadow and what's in light and if the transition between those is that of a harder edge or a softer one gives enough info about the shape itself, so there's no need to hatch to 'show form' per se (imo), unless ofcourse that's what you want to study in the first place.

I think that's mainly a product of mileage. just drawing a lot, getting comfortable with putting marks on a page, naturally gaining in confidence. when an artist is sweating their lines and lacks confidence, it's immediately apparent and off putting to a viewer, we gravitate towards stuff that seems effortless. in the mean time, between now and years down the line once you've been drawing more, try and loosen up as best you can and be more assertive with your lines.

yep, that's why I do figure drawing. to get better at stuff from imagination.
like others have said, constructing the body out of forms is a must for this.
I think I have a bit of trouble getting my figures to not be stiff. finding it difficult to marry gestural poses and a convincing form read in my figures from ref - something I'm working on.
this's some recent stuff from imagination I'm noodling with.

the problem with figure drawing is people just draw the figures naked, so when it comes to drawing something from imagination, obviously with clothing, people don't really get how to do it

you've got to get anatomy down, but also understand different types of clothing and folds and connect them together; otherwise you get an idea of how to draw a figure, but can't implement it into any character design

that's right, the shorter time is making you simplify stuff you could only do with a longer set time, and that's hard indeed, keep going

150/280 i was trying to match the pokemon to the pose, but it wasn’t working. Then I tried to force a figure into the silhouette of the pokemon, but that also didnt work. Finally for the nidorans, i just posed the figure like the pokemon is posed and that seemed to work.

>>6520526

At a certain point you understand what lines to draw and how to effectively communicate figures that replicating them becomes light work

the problem u /beg/ people have is overthinking, and probably drawing your lines so slow it defeats the purpose of figure drawing. whole point is to draw fast and capture the figure. draw and move on immediately

you can do a little bit of gesture. 2-3 minutes. Don't do 30 seconds though. it's useless imo. Spend most of your time on 10-20 minute drawings though.

>>6523438
Thanks for replying, had to ask because I received a lot of contradicting advice about gesture.I wish there were more threads focused on figure and gesture...

>> No.6523468

>>6523458
it's very confusing, but the further you get along, the more clear it becomes. One of the biggest existential crises I faced when I was a beginner was the contradiction between the way Proko did gesture and the way Vilppu did it, I shit you not. Just pick one and keep practicing, worry the differences later

>> No.6523502

This. Unironically, just choose the one style you find the most pleasing to look at and stick to it. You'll start to understand the whole coin the more you pay attention to either side of it.
