Oh that's really nice so far. Not a big fan of the wolf's color scheme coupled with the plaid shirt, but that's not your fault. The shading's nice and subtle, but I like the style. And speaking of the shirt, I love the way it's drawn and rendered. I'm a big fan of shirt/jacket collars like that, but for some reason my brain can't seem to comprehend the space they inhabit, so it's nice to see it so well done. Really impressed with the plaid pattern itself too. I don't even want to think about how long that must have taken. It's making my wrists hurt just looking at it.

It's a 4chan board, buddy. Lots of people ask for shadow/value advice. We can't write a book each time.
Study your favorite art, do value studies on objects/pics with extreme lighting, and learn how shadows interact with the body. Hold your fist up to a harsh light, take a picture, and replicate it. Shine a flashlight on your/someone's face, and draw that. Draw a bunch of interlocking shapes, decide on a lighting direction, and shade that. Look up videos on YouTube.
Before you learn to shade, you should be learning how the various volumes of the subject interact. For example, you could essentially reduce the human arm to a series of smushed together ovoid objects (muscles). Then you can refine the shadows further after you've determined the initial volume.
Also learn about ambient occlusion and bounce light.

It was supposed to be some dragon, but never thought of using a Kobold-type design. Maybe I should draw some more of those. I recognize that really the only way to get out of this predicament is to STUDY (and draw as well).
I've never been the type to study. I've been the type to just DO. I have made attempts to study, whether it's form, or copying anatomy from a book or somesuch, but in the end, my skill and overall knowledge on whatever subject I was studying has remained the same. Have you done studies mainly digitally or tradiionally? I've noticed that digital studies have always done me jackshit because I was using a screenless tablet, essentially making it so that most of my lines were random guesses instead of calculated "answers" if that makes any sense? If you have a screenless tablet, or even if you dont, try studying a subject for a week traditionally, and whenever you are studying, constantly be thinking of the mechanism that go into what you're studying.

I'm trying to draw a clothing reference for one of my characters, and he wears just a normal jacket with a collar. I've posted him in these threads before, pic related.
It's supposed to be a fairly rigid leather jacket with a stiff collar, and I'm finding it hard to draw from a frontal perspective. The proper studies that I've done were all digital, on a screenless tablet, but I've recently started drawing traditionally. What I would do is that whenever I see an interesting scene outside, I draw it. Courtroom proceedings, meetings, traffic, birds. I would count drawing from life still studying personally. You can translate that to art books that focus on anatomy next. Just make sure that there is a lot of active brainwork going on when you do anatomy studies because you could easily forget the material otherwise.

The arm does look like it was just attached to the shoulder. Keep in mind that when an arm is raised, the shoulder follows through. Also, not sure if it’s a stylized choice, but keep an eye on your head proportions. The head looks too big in your sketch. Overall, I’d say keep practicing simple anatomy fundies! You will see improvements in no time.

It been a few days since I've worked on this, but I had a chance to pick it back up today and work on attempting to add some shading. I'm really happy with the hard shadows abound the neck and shoulders and the soft shading for the hair, but I'm struggling with pretty much everything else.

To go on with what this anon said, understanding form and volume really is the answer. You can know little about shading, but if you understand volume well enough the subject matter won't be difficult at all.
What helped me understand form was Peter Han's exercise on drawing those blobs, then placing contour lines on them. About 500 blobs in, I can feel everything.

lurker here, if you're going to take anything from this then it should be focusing on varying your line weight to your images. Compare >>6519040 >>6518544 to your lineart and notice how his image looks readable simply because of how he's used different widths throughout the piece. you have a good base for your work already, just add some thicker widths on the outlines and where forms overlap and you will see an immediate improvement in your work.

if your art feels cluttered then you should start simplifying your details so it's not overloaded. Like your focal point should be the most detailed thing in your piece, no need to draw every lock of hair or turf of fur to make it look good, we already know you can draw countless little details. That is also where the lines should be the heaviest not in the sparks around the character. think about your focal point.

this pic is far from irredeemable imo and even if it was bad you finish it, read the crits, separate the useable feedback from shit posting, go practice, and use refs while daying your next picture. the biggest issue with the anatomy that I see is how squished the head of the tiger looks here. You should practice drawing animals' head more going forward.

My best shake at it. I find it helps me to try to paint with hard round no opacity and as few colors as possible, focusing on the shapes. In theory any form can be depicted with just 3 distinct colors and only hard edges. I find if I cannot do that for my subject I do not understand it well enough and go do some studies from ref using that method.

I don't know how long it takes you to do pieces like this, but keep raising your prices as you improve. I'd say you're worth more than $45 for something like that for sure. I'd say raise basic sketches to $30 and a minimum of $65-$70 for full-shaded pieces like that and see how you do. The furry fandom is honestly really fucking bad about devaluing artists' work.

Yes, actually, I think I can. I've found your faces in the past to be kind of oddly-shaped. Like the muzzles were too straight, or the face was too flat. But this recent picture just feels more skillfully-constructed; the shapes are well-fit together, and the shapes are more organic. The mouth doesn't look uncanny to me. Overall it's just better to look at.
Sorry if that's too vague. I probably lack the language to describe it more helpfully. It's good though.

Maybe it's because i use literal boxes as construction without sculpting it to make more organic and lifelike form. I'll do more head studies (both real and stylized) to make sure it's not stiff and weird looking. Thanks for the input anon
