By only saying 3 words "traditional mechanical pencil" already gives out I'm Argentinian? I'm pale and as white as a snowflake though so that part you got it wrong but kinda curious how what gave it off.

Also when combined with beg "high beg" or "mid beg" made it confusing, as if the "beg" part acted as a minus sign.

as an example imagine: "you're an extra beginner" and "you're not so beginner", with "you're a high class beginner" with "you're medium class beginner". Both examples have opposite connotations of if the former or the later is better at drawing.

You're both really bad, but I don't mean it as an insult as at the same time both of you, in different ways, show the most important, and never spoken on this board, trait for someone that wants to draw: the ability of drawing something and having another person understanding what you wanted to show them.
I know that it sounds extremely stupid, but it's literally the core level of skill you need to improve, so you guys just need to have fun and with time you'll get better
Just, like I said before, do some experimentation looking at guides and stuff, because that's like protein shakes for the drawing muscles in your brain.

At a certain point it becomes a satisfaction/confidence thing, particularly with a project that requires a lot of technical knowledge. I have a Bionicle project in the works, and it always scares me at first to get back to working on it because of all the 3d shapes involved. Nose and lips too big. Freckles look like you put them on with a spray tool with no concern for the shape of the face - some are even in her hair. The far side of the face looks like it's at a different angle than the near side, and the way her neck connects to her torso makes her look quadrupedal. General advice: imagine what you're drawing as a three-dimensional object.

Practice skull landmarks first, learning the names helps a lot but takes it more effort. If you have some money to burn buying a used medical replica is a great invaluable resource that will always be useful for referencing.
Learn head muscles and names after, then next the fat pads, look up the same research material plastic surgeons use.
When you practice don’t draw in a normal sized sketchbook or digital, buy big newspaper pads and draw using conte or charcoal but conte is much better imo. Draw using your shoulder and core not from your wrist. Best of luck

Im not nigger OP, your work is well done and I see your inspiration may come from nouveau, I see you did a good represenation of the changing planes in the neck and clavicles but you are losing that structure in the face, specifically on cheekbones, cheeks and sides of the mouth there are a lot of subtle plane changes there that you can point out - especially since in your composition the eye is drawn directly to the cheek area - the issue is that theres so much information everywhere else that once your eye arrives at the cheek youre met with a big blank, even smooth surface. The skin texture can absolutely be smooth for nouveau purposes but its the suggestion of the structure underneath that can benefit your study, pic related is a simplified version of what I mean even if your subject is not a fatass or old the anatomy is still there and you can exploit that subtleness

Some of those artists copy straight from a photo to reach hyper realism using a grid method, it depends highly on your goals, some artists just like grinding rendering.
If you want to draw it “yourself” without a rendering focused method meant for 1:1 copying, you have to learn the anatomy of your subject, don’t get ahead on crosshatching before studying the skeleton, muscles and feather distribution and variation of the anatomy first. Crosshatching is a complex skill on itself i wouldn’t mix the two until Id feel comfortable with either first, experiment with simple blocky shading to extract the top, side and bottom planes of your subject and get a sense of understanding first.

Harsh values are fine if you want a strong contrasting dramatic look, avoid using muted values unless your piece specifically calls for that intention.
As rule of thumb separate your top, side and bottom planes in different values.
In fact in your piece if I were you I’d add an extra darker black weight only in the down planes - since on your current side and bottom planes you’re using the same weight of value like on the side of the neck and hair

The pose and composition can be improved, try making a black and white mask of your silhouette and try to tell at a glance what’s going on your subject, if the silhouette doesn’t make sense when you see it for the length of a fraction of a second it’s a sign you need to change it into a more readable pose. Draw tiny greyscale thumbnails first to explore poses and compositions so you don’t make a mistake of committing to a full scale detailed drawing without giving honest feedback to yourself.
For example in your drawing I’d reevaluate what’s more important for me and what to make the focus, is it the action of the fist moving in a punching motion? Is it the mid jump action? Is the cape flowing with the characters motion? Think of taking a picture of someone in the middle of a movement that’s where the narrative comes from. Even pinups have a sense of rhythm and movement.

I enjoy this one, I’m not as concerned with your values but you can definitely push them and revise them to further draw the eye to the areas most important to you, don’t be afraid to lighten these relevant areas and even darkening other sections that provide less or no information such as to the far left of the horse for a more dramatic chiaroscuro, I’d suggest revising the proportions and anatomy of the man, can’t say much about horse since I’m not familiar to them but it looks good anon keep improving

>>6532300
I wanted to add after taking a second look now you can also push the pose for both human and animal even further, I see your pose as a section of the movement but not the peak of that makes sense, you can reposition the front of the horse (legs, head and front section of the torso) further upwards to accentuate the weight and impulse the horse takes to gallop ahead, same for the man you could adjust the pose to add a sense of the man balancing to compensate the relationship of the movement the horse has. Might be useful to review videos of people galloping on horses in a similar manner.

It’s what I enjoy doing if I feel I’m hitting a wall and gives me motivation to try other things or retry the piece again. Your tones are interesting and earthy I enjoy the atmosphere of it, I like how the pink of its tongue stands out and pulls your attention right away and the shape of the creature leads your eye to the rest of the lizard, but I get a feeling you’re getting too caught up in the color rather than the structure, I’d advice doing few more rough studies on the anatomy of this creature (without painting color) before continuing working on this piece, it’s looking good anon, same as my previous suggestions to other anons locate and practice the top, side and down planes to give your piece more depth and a grounded sensation to it.

This is from a personal preference but adding an effect of flash photography would be pretty cool, the harsh cast of shadows of a pseudo flash photo plus a trailcam-style vignette on the edges of the piece would give a much tenser feeling. But it all boils downs on your intention anon, what setting are you looking for? is it a banal, cozy everyday type of feeling? or an unsettling sudden discovery that youd sense the moment you stepped into the room? The lighting of the piece gives me this everyday common occurrence vibe - but the muted sterile colors point me to the other direction and sort of contradict it but again it depends if its intentional. The bathroom looks intentionally tidy and well kept, like everything is alright for the exception of what the toilet holds, it gives off a sense of secrecy that you could ramp up - and is where the flash photography/trail cam suggestion is coming from.

Youre getting too distracted by the outward look of your drawing rather than the structure, try studies of the individual pieces that make up your subject, make rotating sketches in different poses of the gun, armor, helmets etc.
Experiment with simpler blocky shading with charcoal, conte, pastels, dont focus on cross hatching yet, you need to build a relationship with your own intention and planning ahead if that makes sense - always have in mind that each of your strokes need to have an explicit purpose dont scribble unless youre aware youre doing it and knowingly take the risk its going to be read as random filler.

It looks you’ve spent a good amount of time face which looks pleasing, but the movement of the hands, arms, torso, and the positioning of the feet could be revised, I feel the pose of the feet and legs are also interfering with reading the character is standing in solidly in whatever environment you have in mind, I’d also advise for you to always prioritize the prop first when sketching out the initial drawing, if you draw the sword before moving onto other less important parts of your subject such as the the face then you will be able to focus on the pose as a whole and it’s interaction with objects, and to show more narrative such as deciding if it’s a heavy sword for example, don’t leave the props half drawn the full shape is as important as the rest of the characters anatomy.

>> No.6533756

Are you a fujo anon? Left looks like a pleasing default style, but don’t be afraid of adding more depth and detail to the characters features, hard to judge without seeing rest of your material but I get a feeling you’re not as inclined in drawing both eyes visibly but I may be judging too harshly, aside from that I can only suggest that you draw the rest of the body, especially in the case of the drawing in the right since it’s easy to fall into disembodied hand effect since you’re not considering the structure of the body as a whole, I’d also suggest planning out the silhouette shape of your composition before hand, since the drawing at the right the readability of the pose is hard to catch at a glance.
I do feel the black squares are kind of hurting and pulling away attention form the drawing itself, it may work better just to have a black background. Remember that the solids artists use as “space filler” in background can also serve a purpose, is it representing a doorway in the background? A hall? An object? The symmetrical and clean edges of the black square also hurt how it integrates compared to your looser line style. Remember all elements must have a purpose avoid just filling in space for the sake of it.

Here Anon, I agree with the other Anon on AI SD, you can make some comparisons in-between, it also helps having reference of reptile anatomy for this particular cases (regardless if its an extinct animal). Guessing this little fella is a dimetrodon. Giving you my artistic insight, aside diffusion, you are lacking structure, you cannot differentiate anatomy from it. Moving onto texture, its hard to define the intention around the dorsal fin (being so thin you would expect subsurface scattering and a smooth looking surface), there's lack of compression wrinkles in the skin and lack of suggestive details such as scales (you dont need to draw the entire reptile with them, is just enough to suggest it on the mid-tones). Moving onto values, human eye is kin to contrast, you can play with that too, and color theory is a bit dull, you can try warming up the environment (make it yellower) specially if your subject is on the cool color scheme. There are some other rendering details specially on the water lacking either transparency and reflection, but before any of that you should concentrate on getting the underlying structure right first.

Very nice m8, I really like the flow of the fabric and direction of the lines, this is just my opinion but I feel the arm raising like that kind of hijacks your eye trying to flow down into the rest of the composition, my gaze begins at her eyes next to her hair blowing in the wind gently until it hits the elbow and I’m kind of stuck in that arm area looping into the elbow, then hand and back to elbow again.
It’s also not a natural pose it take some effort to mimic that posture and I feel my muscles stretching in effort trying to hold it, why is she holding her hand out like that? Is she reaching towards the viewer? If that’s the case maybe you need to add more foreshortening since right now it feels rather stiff when it’s just bending towards the side like that, like it’s pivoting like the hands of a clock do.
If the arm stops interrupting the movement of the fabric I feel it will instead enhance this flowing motion you have already working on the rest of her

I enjoy the negative space aspect you’re playing with a much brighter value in your background and the red tint flowing in your subject, it feels at a glance the character is in a brightly artificial lit room like a club.
Aside from anatomy structure practice mentioned in this thread (skeleton>muscle>fat >clothing) I’d suggest continue exploring global illumination, pic related imagine the light pouring from your bright background into your subject - light rays bounce around and the color source bleeds into objects depending on their material qualities, you’re already applying this but do push it more. Look into subsurface scattering you can dial up this quality in this drawing.
For the pose itself it seems a tad forced, take a picture of yourself putting on a glove and pay attention to your posture and feel your own body if the pose feels comfortable or not, it does depend though if you want your subject to appear like they’re posing for a photo shoot but if your angle is for a more relaxed and natural approach then lowering the hand positions and adjusting them for more foreshortening so it doesn’t compete attention wise with the face may help in establishing this spontaneous incognito photo aspect of it, same applies for the leg positioning even if your final piece is cropped it’s always beneficial drawing the full subject first to achieve your subject being grounded in space.

id suggest making several thumbnails for compositions and values, make studies in greyscales first to nail down your light sources before comitting to color, get references I know the tim burton style is intentional but the anatomy could use more practice, the pose is extremely rigid, i dont know if the hand is missing because youre rendering on the go - if so this is a mistake make your foundations first. Foreshorten elements as well.

>>6535677
>furfaggot
the problem i feel is as another anon mentioned youre comparing yourself to another person who views the world differently from you, your drawings have to come from within not from aiming to copy someone elses style or end result.
Drawing is a method, use your inner eye to conjure a concept and your way of "feeling" things as you draw and explore will manifest, its practice it wont ever work without diligence. The person is quick to draw probably because they have done it over and over again, dont be too hard on yourself and for the love of god make a lot of anatomy studies no longer than 5 minutes each, you cant stylize or reduct from what is uknown.

>>6535810
who cares about your skill level, focus on what CAN be achieved not on what you have already achieved, the latter is a good way to sit on your laurels and risk not improving. I like your contrast but the background is hurting you, either show the background or dont show it at all, add a light source - im thinking a single spotlight which can let you completely darken the rest of the empty background while keeping some of your stylized hard edges shadows- otherwise if youre aiming for a moonlit scene think of a softer approach to shadows and light bounces. You also have to spend time on the composition, add depth, interesting angles and tell a story of what the subject is doing, it doesnt matter if the person doesnt know the character but you can describe the subjects personality and environment through this narrative.

you also need to vary your lines, again I know its probably intentional but it personally feels weird seeing everything in your piece have the same weight and thickness of line. Thicker or varying lines can be used to lead your eye into certain areas, also dont fucking add the tiny detail like the chain links, belt ornaments or any other detail at all until you have the information of the structure of the entire piece. Biggest mistake I notice on a lot of people and went through myself is artists just want to get ahead and overwork the tiny ass areas that dont matter to your composition, when you waste your focus and resources like that youre inviting burnout to yourself when you realize now you have to sustain the over-detailed look in the rest of the piece or youll hate it. Work on your pieces in passes: small thumbnail for composition, and planning background and foreground>block your structure and foundations>greyscale for locating light sources>color and ornamental details last

Its a cool drawing, but anatomy wise the neck appears too short, the length of the arms look too short too, limb proportions are a bell curve but usually the standard is your hands reaching the middle of your upper thighs, the arms look like you referenced a mish mash of photos do you have a reference? the position of the arms suggest the hand and arm are way much further behind than the torso and is causing a disconnection with the girl, the other hand also looks mirrored and has the same issue. She can have a long torso and short legs but look for reference of women with this ratio, practice anatomy. I didnt take much on this please take this image with a grain of salt. did a quick exercise in getting a feel of the flow in your reference, it doesnt replace a proper anatomy study you have to know the layers of the skeleton, muscles and fat and how they all add on top underneath the skin. but for exploratory purposes it helps me in trying to locate the downplanes, locate landmarks and to get a flow from them, your cross hatching may also benefit from it since it helps in economizing the amount of lines in order to enhance the sensation of volume and what directions of the lines to use, looking at your drawing and comparing I see your ribcage is situated differently when I trace over the reference

I see, that's interesting, also thanks for the picture, I have some troubles with line directions yea. So basically I need more anatomy and some gesture. Gestures are honestly a big problem of mine, I just can't find a way of draw them that can click with me.
About the rib cage I decided to play with it a little, maybe it wasn't a great idea but it looks interesting( I think haha).

I was taught a good way to practice gesture is capturing a poses from lifedrawing each taking 30secs and moving into a next set of 90secs per pose. You dont need to add the full detail even making a simplified form like rough lines, sets of spheres and loose building blocks are enough, this gesture is not great but I was told I need to do the full body and get better at scaling in advance to avoid running out of space but you get the main idea. Your gesture can also look like the smaller image on the left, suggestive lines do the work pretty well. Keep in mind gestures dont need to look pretty they are for your own benefit for getting a feel or flow, look up into line of action to be able to communicate movement and grounding, also if its hard at a glance to see proportions take notice of negative space of your subject.

These ones still look pretty cool. I can only make a somewhat decent gesture if I take my time. At the very least 10 minutes.
Ehhh. Maybe I need to try a different approach.

dont let yourself take that long, you will notice improvement in a short amount of time if you honor those sets of 30sec and 90 secs, if its incomplete by that time leave it incomplete and start a new set, godspeed anon

Im a renderlet, but I enjoy the process Annie Stegg's uses of painting in monochrome first and then adding the colors after in passes, still you have to develop your constructional drawing skillset otherwise it will only limit you.

Well from the obvious stuff his right fist should be closer to his chest, try to do the same gesture and you'll see it's too awkward when you hold your arm to the side like him.

No one likes furfags anon you can’t blame them
It’s good you decided to make a greyscale out of your piece but I feel you have to retake some steps back, for your own self study purposes get rid of the flashy filler effects, think of it as a garnish and not the sole driver of movement, movement and rythm comes from gesture, review your silhouettes and use values to bring elements towards the foreground or background. Remake small thumbnails of your scene to try to find out what works and what doesn’t, it’s a mistake to finish rendering when the composition is not clear enough

Alright, fair advice. Especially about making thumbnails to see what works and what doesn't work. I'll try that with my next artworks.

I guess I'll also be fair to the anons here and admit that maybe I'm biased about the whole unreadability thing since I know what this pic is supposed to be but people looking at this can't.
