If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
Completed: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit
New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
Read the sticky

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I've saved pretty much everything I've drawn (including practice exercises) to both hold myself accountable for low effort drawings and to be able to look back and see how far I've come. But I keep giving up on drawing after a couple of weeks each time, so now my first drawing is several years old and I haven't really improved much. It makes me a little disappointed, but I'm gonna make it. Even if it takes me decades, I will eventually learn how to draw.

Dont do hatching and crosshatching if you are going to scribble and not care about any of the lines.

- scribbling outside of lines should never happen. you routinely have lines crossing into other parts of the drawing. This is childlike mistakes coloring outside the lines tier. Easy fix is to practice line control. drawabox is a meme, but has stolen practice exercises in the first chapter or two for line control, ghosting lines, etc.
- lines are just thrown randomly without regards for the contour or plane of the object and routinely do not start or end at edges of plane they are rendering. its everywhere, but look right side vertical. the lines are so random in where they start and end even from line to line.
- spacing matters. you are creating gradients with line width and space between them. close together is darker. they should get farther apart as you go to imply the gradient of fading out to white or lighter shade. take horizontal sections at the top - you wanted it to be darker on the right curved side, but just add more lines randomly. its 'whiter' on the left, but the spacing is random. it then gets scribbly and darker but then randomly light in middle with the drastic change in spacing of lines. it doesnt read like light. just scribbles.
- cross hatching is a technique. its not just random lines. a good starting rule of point is to make your vertical and horizontals. once laid down pattern, angle so you hit every corner of the boxes. look at crosshatching up top. its just random angled lines. the spacing is drastically different every line. its just thrown lines with no thought.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJXCw9J9eFI

go through old richard friend archives. these arent random lines. they require thought. You are on the right path, but you are in a rush. inking is time consuming process.

according to nicolaides and eviston gesture is the most most important shit in the art universe and you need to do hundreds if not thousands of them to get it. Of course I'm going to practice more with real women than with anime if that's what you're concerned about. I'm just wondering if there's anything specific I should keep in mind or look out for. I'm still working on fundamentals, mainly form right now, so this stuff is going to be pretty far down the line for me, but I'd like to start thinking about these things now to help with my motivation.

No, it's most likely this was freehanded and Tanaka winged it by adding very slight convergence of verticals, which would make this a very subtle three-point perspective setup (as in most photographs and life drawing situations; it's rare to have more than one axis aligned with the picture plane).

Trying to wrap my head about perspective, I thought this video was pretty good. But curious, how do you determine where to put the initial station paint he mentions? Seem to me you can put the cone wherever you want, the 60 degree lines from the paint don't seem to intersect the image plane at any particular place. Or is it as simple as using a compass, setting it to 60 degrees, make a circle around your paper and then from the horizon line tracking the lines down till you get them intersecting at a point with a 60 degree angle again?

Man I'd need a larger drawing table. to do that.

basically the stationpoint is where you are standing and looking at the 'scene' you are drawing. if you ever do a perspective drawing and the buildings look squished or stretched out too much even though all the lines hit vanishing points, its because they didnt understand the station point and cone of vision people have.

I would have used the clavicle to give a sense of 3d instead of the traps and omit more lines on the breast. What I really like is the left forearm its very 3d, try redoing this but using a greyscale filter on the reference

>Okay I’m currently furious that migraines are often so blindly easy to treat and I had to find this out myself at the age of 26 when I’ve been to a neurologist since I was 11 lol so I’m about to teach you two neat and fast little tricks to deal with pain!

>The first is the sternocleidomastoid muscle, or the SCM muscle.

>This big red section is responsible for pain around the eye, cheekbone, and jaw, as well as some temple pain. Literally all you have to do is angle your head down a little, angle it away from the side that hurts, and then you can gently pinch and rub that muscle. I find it best to start at the bottom and travel upwards. The relief is so immediate! You can increase pressure as you feel comfortable doing so.

I never understood how people who claim they have 'aphantasia' even get interested in learning art. If you can't envision absolutely anything you'd like to create, why would you want to spend literal years to learn how to create that nothing? Or do you just get inspired by a picture and think "I want to create exactly the same picture I'm looking at right now"?

>> No.6516392

NTA but for me it's weird, i can envision something but it only appears for a split second before going away. also you'd be surprised by how many people get into art just by seeing someone else's work and going "i wanna make something like that"

>i can envision something but it only appears for a split second before going away
I think that's normal though. You need to draw something several times to solidify your understanding of that thing, and by understanding it, you solidify it in your mind as well. It's easier to imagine an apple and rotating it in your head than it is to do the same with a car engine. The apple you've seen a million times, seen it from different angles, you've touched it, felt it's weight, tasted it, etc. The engine you've most likely only seen briefly a couple of times over your lifetime. Your understanding of the objects is completly different. Often we want to draw things we know exists, but don't really have a good understanding of what they really are. So we end up with this brief 'glimpse' of that thing, rather than the actual thing. Also, understanding how one things works often helps you understand how other things work. Knowledge builds on knowledge. This is why a broad visual library is such an important thing. At least that's my understanding as a /beg/.

>> No.6516419

kind of like reading a novel when it goes into the description of what a character looks like, I can imagine the character existing in my head, but I cant visualize/see it like a picture in my mind.
when you and other nonaphants see a description of something can you actually visualize it like as if its an actual picture and can you put it in any position without being given the detail to do so? or can you only know/think about it from the description itself? this is hard to conjure in words lol
for example heres a description
>a girl in a blue dress and purple heels holding a red umbrella
I can imagine the character existing but cant visualize nor manipulate it in anyway

>> No.6516436

>>6516419
>Like as if its an actual picture
If I want to yeah.
Usually though I can just "feel" something in my mind. But also I can imagine the depth of things, when I draw I try to really understand how everything fits into place and how certain parts will come closer or move further away from ones eyes.
>or can you only know/think about it from the description itself
No
I was a bit confused from your other post and it seemed like you could 'see' things but I think I know what you mean because honestly I never have a "description" in my mind. Sometimes if I want to be consistent I can note it, but honestly the picture comes first and then I describe it with words. The only time it goes the other way is if I'm trying to think of something new and interesting.

I don't think this means it's over for you though. As vivid as my imagination is, my drawings rarely match what I see and it's usually pretty vague, and even if I can fuckin imagine an apple or intricate object, the picture is not as clear as it seems if I actually try to focus on anything. Usually it changes entirely and it's frustrating. My drawings are not a direct translation from the pictures in my head, rather these are both expressions of my imagination and are not necessarily connected, they both come from the same source though (Thinking of something)

one thing is that you've both misinterpreted the orientation of her pelvis and ribcage, they're not parallel. Her ribcage is leaning away, so we shouldn't see the the top plane in a simplified form. Keep in mind tho that you shouldn't lean the ribcage tooo far back: She IS leaning forward so the ribcage will be more parallel with the viewer than normal. It's just that if you lean it too far forward, you're removing the Curve of the pose.

I was a bit misleading; the ~front plane~ of the ribcage is leaning back. The top plane of the ribcage leans forward a bit, and the bottom plane isn't just flat, so it's easy to get confused. See picrel for how i usualy simplify the planes of the ribcage.

Overall, i say you should think of it as leaning back, otherwise you risk flattening the curve, like in the two attempts i commented on.

Your model is leaning forward, you've got that in the hips, but you've drawn the torso straightening out/pulling back. In addition, the model's torso is not rotating that far to the left. If you're trying to reconstruct a pose exactly, to the point of making mistakes like that head placement, it's important to make sure you're doing it EXACTLY. The second that you start to shorthand your sketch and just place volumes without thinking, even if they are drawn 'correctly,' you've missed the point of the exercise.
