I think there's some kind of chemical runoff contaminating my well or something, because I've been struck with a very strong, yet inexplicable desire to learn how to draw furry art. I've enjoyed sketching for many years, but my rendering and coloring skills are garbage and I've never done any digital art before now.

Here's my first project that it looks like I'm actually going to finish. I'm really pleased with how the linework turned out, but I'm really struggling with the shading. Shading the face in particular is giving me a lot of trouble. I'm also having some difficulty with drawing glossy metal. I'm mostly satisfied with the receiver/dust cover area, but the barrel and gas tube area still looks off.

I also need to add more floofyness. The tail in particular looks too solid.

Any criticism/ideas are a huge help!

Yea, there's actually some lore behind my cringy ass OC. She's human turned bird, so her friends are looking for a specific spell to turn her back human. But doing that will cause complications, so there's other characters out to kill her to make sure he never turns back human for the good of the world.

I agree with the last part though. I think any creative medium involving characters is better if you can really put yourself in their shoes. I think that's why so much writing fails these days, is because people are making characters that are insincere or inauthentic. Look at Forspoken, for example. It's a shame more people aren't seen for their D&D contributions because I've seen a lot of really good characters from a lot of people.

I think good writing comes from other people seeing your work and criticism. So for DnD related stuff, you're basically subconsciously adjusting your character and the lore to fit the world it's in, and with your friend's character. Giving your own crit, and the more knowledge you have on both subject matters, you can make adjustments. And as you play, you can see how your character plays out with others, and from there learn how to take the character further on the next campaign. Kind of grows the writer here. And in turn, gives the character more Quality in the artwork.

I'd say focus less on the color, and learn to make a convincing solid drawing without it. Seems like you want to hurry up and get to the end result already, when really majority of your focus should be on the start of the drawing.
Let's say it takes 5 steps to complete a drawing. You want to make sure majority of your focus is on step 1 and 2, and the rest onto the others. Otherwise, there is some symbol drawing going on here. You'll need knowledge how How the body works, and not just relying on references.

So here's what I'd like you to do. Look for the book called "Morpho: Simplified Forms: Anatomy for Artists", it's a very easy book to find. Copy every drawing but Skip the heads. Only attempt to copy each drawing once. Judge it, if you feel the copy is off, learn from it, continue onto the next drawing.
Once you finish fully copying the book, do it again but from imagination. The imagination being; see the drawing, close the "book", try to draw what you recall. And go from there. Half your drawing time should be on completing this task, and the other half should be working on your personal stuff. You NEED to do both. As you do this, you'll start to make a connection between the importance of your studies and your own work. You'll be frustrated, you'll feel it's pointless, you'll even question why you're even doing this. This is normal, everyone goes through these emotions. Eventually, you'll start telling yourself "stupid fucking anon from fag making me do his exercise. So goddamn pointless I hate him. I HATE EVERYONE!!" but once you're done with the book, I guaranteed you, you will be at the level you were trying to aim for this entire time. And upon the 2nd copy, you'll truly ascend. You need the knowledge, without it you cannot get better.

The arms DO look a bit weird, but the torso, and mostly everything else, is pretty rockin'. It's not the musculature necessarily, but how they're posed. His left arm looks particularly stiff and a little unnatural. I find arms look best at rest when they're flowing into some pose and relaxed. Perhaps he could be propping himself up from behind with that arm?

If you learn some basic construction and use references, you won't have to guess. It's a cute picture, but a bit stiff, and there's really not much advice anyone can give other than keep practicing, and build up your foundational knowledge.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I finally got some free time so I tried lining and coloring the bird.

It's so frustrating that I forgot how I used to illustrate, but it's understandable given how long it's been. In the meantime, enjoy this mid-2000s "How to Draw Anime/Manga"-esque coloring and lining.

gesture is always a hard thing to parse, and probably requires hundreds of hours of gesture drawing to really "get it" but I like the way Steve Huston describes it in his book "figure drawing for artists making every mark count" he's also done figure drawing courses on new masters academy and other places I think but the same info is in the book.
Gesture is just the relationship between parts with which you can lay their structure and form on top of, a cup on a table has a gesture because it has a relationship to (a relative position and movement away from) the table. Everything has gesture. I wish I could help more because it's been something I remember having trouble with.
But yeah you've got the gist from what I can tell, the energy, the movement, the relationship of the parts with which you can place the structure/ anatomy/ volume of the thing on top.

I made the fingers slimmer, fixed the expression a bit, and did the first coat of color tonight. I didn't have time to do any shading yet, unfortunately. That's what I hear. I have no solid numbers, and it's mostly conjecture anyways, but a few pics a week is probably a good place to start. Of course, your work has to be of a quality that naturally attracts some attention too. But even then that's not the rule, as I've seen some terrible artists with huge followings. Of course personal taste plays a big part, and you can ignore most of what I'm saying if you cater to a specific fetish or fandom. But, and again this is just personal observation speaking, fully-rendered art tends to get more attention. Not to say sketches and linework don't, but they have to be pretty good to offset the lack of flashiness that non-rendered work has by virtue of simply having color and polish. The people who just scroll and consume artwork tend to be less interested in the minutiae of a drawing and more on how quickly it dazzles them. I've heard the figure being around three seconds to grab someone's attention; if it takes any longer, they've already scrolled past.

Is it just me or has Chunie gotten really bland?

Like his growth since I began following him around 2017 has been incredible but I feel like his work has become too artificial. Too perfect? It's starting to feel uncanny, too manufactures and unoriginal.

It's just big dicked twinks/twunks posing, usually with a smug grin. It doesn't feel like he has interesting stylistic choices beyond realism/renaissance looking fox boys. It was nice to see he do something a little different with that short hyena "game" recently though.
