**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Fellas, my goal is to draw anime girls with detailed scenarios or artistic backgrounds, I already reached that goal. The problem is, I’m having a a hard time trying to stick an rendering style.
Should I even bother learning to render semi realistic styles like the ones on the left that AI can easily replicate and its everywhere on Artstation? Or should I go with an unique kirky style like the ones on the right that relies on hatching textures and heavy uses of black? Panpanya (bottom right) and some earlier works of Sousou (top right) are my favorite artists.

drawing like this feels like the hardest thing ever, even though it looks simple. Why are the lines amateurish but in all the right places? Every detail is clear and each character has gesture somehow. There's also depth in the picture and a story being told, but the lines are just shitty doodle lines that dont have any varying thickness. What the fuck? How the fuck can I learn to draw messy like this but it looks amazing? I'm spending hours constructing heads and painstakingly making each bang of hair taper perfectly.

some people trace along the outline of the character and then bucket fill inside, some people use the lasso fill tool, some people just color inside the lines clean up the edges. once you have flat color laid down you can lock transparency or use clipping layers to shade/add detail/whatever else. there are tons of tutorials on this online

So the other day an op had a thread about what loomis would think of the anime head. All posters told him the head fell into the loomis structure. I laughed about how the thread just turned into shitting on op for not getting it and someone told me to post anime head which i did.
Then an anon told me the head was missing the second volume (the one in the back of the head) i told them i usually just filled it out with hair, and after further examination they were right.
Anime heads are significantly larger than what i was doing previously which kind of cut off at where the hairline is. You could prob go into the archive and find it. When i get home i will post a before after img.

anime shijuku or アニメ私塾 (shijuku means private school)
https://twitter.com/animesijyuku

This one is also run by veteran animator Yasuo Muroi, he started his career in anime industry by joining Studio Ghibli in early 2000s, it was a bad moment because by the time he joined some of veteran Ghibli-trained animators had already left the studio, like Kenichi Konishi, Masashi Ando and Kenichi Yoshida. Konishi and Ando left Ghibli to work with director like Satoshi Kon, while Yoshida became attached to Eureka Seven.

Anyway, Yasuo Muroi stayed as in-betweener at Ghibli working on outsourced projects and then left as a freelancer. He did eventually climb the ranks as an animator to animation director, and then storyboarder and episode director. To be honest, he isn't a prolific animator, or a genius one like Masashi Ando. But he's a hard worker and his lessons are suited for people like him who started from zero.

Man, the way anime industry works nowadays, they will accept anyone who can draw. Seriously.

These are my advice if you want to get into anime industry:
>Go watch Shirobako
>Grab The Animator's Survival Kit
it's intended for western animation, but you'll learn a lot by understanding the principles of animation.
>Watch these youtube channels
- Dong Chang
- Tonari Animation (a lot of know-how, anime 101 like what are storyboards, timesheets, how do you draw layouts, how to do cleanup, inbetween etc)
- Studio Bulldog
- YenBM
- World Anime Networks
- Desuran/ですらん (Keisuke Kojima)
- アニメ私塾 (Yasuo Muroi)
- hide channel【顔と体の描き方講座】for composition, pose, anatomy, fundamentals of drawing which is necessary for animation

Look up for keywords like: 作画タイムシート
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-aPPX_rJZM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBEvDfjeLF4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBsvTdxwM6Q

>You also need to read many books on perspective, do croquis, etc.

>Most importantly get friends who have same interest in animation. Join sakugafoundry/Tonari Animation discord. This is a group of foreign artists and anime fans who learned animation from zero, they build community around anime production, some of their members are already assisting anime production as animators/cleanup artists/inbetweeners.

>Go make a twitter account and follow a lot of japanese animators and production assistants

>>6499169
id just download Peter Han Dynamic Sketching to supplement/replace Step 1, or even Bert Dodson Keys to Drawing as Step 0
i never did Stonehouse, but it might be a bit too intensive for this stage instead of Loomis, Hampton or Bridgman
do lots of drawing ideally from life but photograph is OK, geometric shapes, fruits, bottles, plants, birds, etc. then humans
never did vilppu, idk how good he is. personally id replace this with Marco Bucci 10 Minutes Series, Gurney Color + Light, Richard Schmid Alla Prima
*obviously final step is personal preference for what you want, but a lot of "how to draw anime" books/yt vids are really bad,
anime settei can be bad too for diff reasons (made for TV production so that animators can do the thousands of frames / episode quickly), use it for reference on how to draw a character more than your benchmark style. obviously this varies depending on how good the show production and char designers are
yoh yoshinari artbooks are crack though, download as many of those are you can

its possible to find a midpoint, a good exercise is to draw a shape and then figure out the underlying anatomy, krenz sometimes does this
you can try drawing a random squiggle and building out a line of action / silhouette from that

A lot of it is just carry over from the limitations of traditional mediums. If you do a bit of lining with pens you'll get a feel for whats comfortable and it just feels better to end lines like this then to try and make complicated sharp curves with a pen.
They aren't actively deciding to end the lines to make the best line art they are just conditioned to do it this way. You can use it as a technique to show form and light, look up lost edges.

You obviously don't know the planes of the face, you don't need a surgeon type of knowledge but just enough for you to know where is everything orientated at least, and you work from there to more specific aspects of the face. still major symbol drawings in your heads, drop the memeball thats for day 1 begs, and if you are one you shouldn't be stylizing , remember, know the rules before breaking them, go learn basic head/face anatomy and then you modify it to fit your style of choice.
