depends if you are practicing right or just mindlessly get it done mentality etc. if you dont actively do anythign to improve and just repeat osme exercise you arent really sure why you are doing, you obviously wont improve even after hundreds of hours. if you slow down and analyze your practice exercises and actively look for mistakes and correct them, then you should improve.

for example, if you are doing ellipses or line weight or feathering/crosshatching and just scribble lines, thats not accomplishing anything. you are finishing the exercise, but its the same mistakes as the day before. you just wasted 15 minutes doing it or whatever.

when im in portrait mode, i'll do loomis heads from free references and full construction, etc. takes about half hour to do a head or two, depending on angle/difficulty/if i render it at all. the point is i am focusing on measurements, anatomy and actively measuring and trying to improve my portraits and construction. i'm not just filling a page with doodle heads and calling it practice. sometimes ill do the literal loomis plates.

practice makes perfect, but practicing wrong will always be wrong.

I am doing the best to improve as quickly as I can regarding what I want to get competent at (general character design, lineart, detailing, dynamic poses, explicit coom, hands, foreshortening, faces and expressions, and related while also ignoring stuff like rendering, environments, mecha, etc. for now just to get good faster at character art), so internalizing and practicing often core techniques and methods is a must for consistent and increasing quality in what I produce. So you can't say I am someone who just draws a full page of mindless Loomis heads and call it a day since my focus is clear from the start, tho I might need to produce more finished pieces and learn how to doodle just for fun in general as well.

When I want to draw something, what all should I be attempting to mark with lines? The only things I've worked out so far is that an object against a background should have its silhouette outlined, and hard edges formed by surface geometry (such as the corners of a wooden crate) should be marked with lines. Unfortunately, that seems to cover very few of the things I need to be marking in order to create something that actually resembles a drawing. What do I need to add to that list?

Alternately, am I approaching this the wrong way? The things I intuitively want to mark with lines are mostly highlights, which doesn't work out well, and I'm having trouble finding an alternative to trusting my faulty instincts.

It actually doesn't affect anything other than printing (including performance), if you set it to 0 it'll be fine and even if you change your mind later you can change it to a printable DPI with no issue as long as you kept the original .kra file.
If you have a lower end PC it might be worth checking out AzPainter or MyPaint if you're on Linux. Krita itself might be a bigger issue than the canvas size, for most stuff you'd want at least 2K.

majority of digital do greyscale to color. many do blender markup and photobashing stuff first and then it lets them go from greyscale to color and change things with basically click of a button to see if they want a different pallet or hair color or whatever effect. even for landscales, you can get your values in greyscale and then move to color. its like making thumbnails first traditionally.

So when it comes to drawing from life, is it best to break the subject down into simple shapes/forms and then "draw what you see"?

>> No.6508175

>>6508095
It's best, no a necessity, to start with blocking the drawing in the space of your canvas/paper. Measure from top to bottom, left to right and do a sort-of connect the dots lines to block the general "shape" your drawing will take up. Once your done with that and know for a fact that no part of the model's head/limbs will be cut outside of the canvas then you move in with large free strokes that give you the feeling of the pose and it's gesture. It is best to make them with your shoulder/elbow. It really doesn't matter what the subject matter is, a couple of cans have a line of placement and so-on. THEN you start breaking the subject/model into simple shapes on top of the free lines and IN the confined space you mapped in the begging.

>what's the correct resolution for 1000x1000 pixels?
1000x1000 pixels is always going to be 1000x1000 pixels, no matter what value you put in dpi, it wont add or remove pixels from your image, you can always change it afterwards, its information for printing, it only make sense if you have physical dimension too. for example 210 x 297 mm (a4 print size) printed with 300dpi, you will need roughly 2400x3500 pixels image to print it that way, but if you want to print lower quality 150dpi at same a4 size then you only need around 1200x1700 pixels image.

Senseless question. Understandable, because no one seems to know what that means, but it's easy.

The resolution is a value only useful for the printer. This value can be even deleted; in this case, the printer will assume a default value.
A resolution of 254 means that 100 pixel are equal to 1 centimeter.
A resolution of 100 means that 100 pixel are equal to 1 inch.

I started up drawing recently (< 2 months ago), and currently trying to understand how do I get proportions in human body right.
My approach is quite mechanical in nature, as in I either sketch from photos, or do rough sketches from imagination and then approach them with ruler to check, if I got proportions correctly.

its usually relative to the head size. you can adjust proportions on head heights as well if you want someone heroic looking or for fashion designers they use like 10-12 head height and super long legs - but it would all be relative to the size of the head you draw.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8CSKor2GNw is a fashion designer showing how to adjust a normal reference to a 10 head size. she discusses head heights, relative anatomy markings that coincide with the head heights, etc. you may not want to do fashion, but its still basically the jist of this.

but generally, youll have head heights for your character and then adjust proportions based on that. this doesnt change anatomy per se, but how they look when drawn. super heroes are like 8 heads usually, fashion croquis are 10-12, etc. children have different head proportions due to large heads/small bodies/still developing if you are doing children.

da vinci virtruvian man is probably most famous proportions image and it shows off a lot of basic anatomy and reference marks. ive attached a generic image of head heights though.

for the landmarks, 1 head is jaw to top of head. 2 heads usually hits at the nipples or around there (hanging breasts, muscled pecs, etc might put nipples above or below the line). 3 heads is usually hitting the belly button. 4 hits the crotch. the legs usually where adjustments are made for total head height proportions (8 for 'ideal/heroic', 10 for fashion, etc with longer legs for more heads). 5 is probably mid thigh, 6 the knees, 7 high ankle, and 8 would be the bottom of feet.

other landmarks can be learned. for instance, the wrists hanging at side hit just below crotch or deltoid lines up with nipples, elbows at belly button, etc. things like reilly rhythms teach more advanced relationships and lines that can help map out the way a body connects.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djHcqOjAaoY does loomis body and discusses it with landmarks.

It depends on you, but there will always be a moment, when it can no longer be salvaged.

I usually pick up red pencil and mark down whatever looks bad and make a small note - why does it look bad?
This gives me an indication of my current issues.

Where does it come from? Are the bones naturally shaped like this?

just master studies and analyze their art. what do they do that makes it unique. like pen and ink you can look at so many options. thickness of lines. do they crosshatch or is it all hatches. do they obey perspective or do they only obey contours. do they use pure black and white or is there a wash or other greytone from diluted ink, etc. thats just the technical inking part on how they generate the lines. what they render and how they render it comes in.

for colored pieces, the color pallet is a large factor on top of the medium. a water color piece vs gouache or copics. a muted pallet vs vibrant ghibli poster paint style piece. ghibli or old disney cartoon style, for example, can be applied to any real world reference if you understand the simplifying of plants and basic colors used. very easy to study and learn as a simple example.

its not so much just 'copy' them as understanding what you are copying and why they draw or color or do the things they do. why did they crosshatch that. why did they dry brush that part only. why are they using such a dark pallet, etc.

1. What is a good sketchbook to use with them? I'm going to do Han's Dynamic Sketching soon, I think he uses a sketchbook with toned paper, so I'll be looking for something like that.

Any actual profession that relies a lot on linework like cartoonists has rotated the paper since time immemorial. It's why traditional animator's desks have wheels. If you watch a comic artist inking or an animation cleanup guy at work you'll likely see them spinning that shit like a top.
That's because it's important to prioritise the motions your arm can comfortably achieve. There's no point to gimping yourself doing uncomfortable motions on purpose.

Many people suck on Jung Gi and many mangaka for their inking skills, but I got a question. I like my art either clean when working with ink, I don't like random scratchy lines. The thing is, I'm tired of having to repeat my strokes when working in digital. I see many modern mangaka doing these clean and stylish lines, even in hentai, and considering they work on a schedule, I do wonder how do they manage to do these.
Is it the tablet or what? I've had this one since 2017, it's one of those budget intuos from 2015. If it is, what practices can I implement to produce clean lines faster?
And, I mean, the tablet is very good for paintings and such, but when doing comic-like art I become very sluggish, and that is particularly frustrating because when going back to trad, lines come off flawlessly and quick.
What can I do?

its a bunch of different perspectives. the woman has her own perspective. the buildings are a basic 3 point perspective. 3d models he traced and colored. probably clip paint asset or some other imported asset. the fence is also not drawn, but has been manipulated. just warped. its not really drawn to a perspective - its altered with computer. the sky/clouds give the image its faux perspective and its just the clouds drawn in circular motion radiating out from the sun. they dont match the girl or the buildings. you can trace the 3pt lines of buildings upwards and see they dont align with the sky/clouds/sun. you can look at the girl and relate her postion to the fence - shes falling over relatively speaking. she should be leaned back like how the corner of the fencing is angled away. instead shes not in perspective.

so its basically a 3pt perspective with a different skybox and that fence thrown in.

It would be one thing if I were drawing fanart of some one-off character or something, but my own personal characters for some reason have that feeling that he's ignoring everything else that I drew and have in mind about that character, as if it were a direct insult to my entire design.

If I had to make an educated guess, ethyl 3-ethowhatever is the main coating ingredient, acetone and toluene keeps it liquid until it dries, propane and butane is what allows it to spray out of the can. Just practice common sense and use it in a well ventilated area.

that's likely a brush preset/ a tool preset. You can get stuff that does similar in brush packs. I have the "evenant concept art brush pack" that has brushes labelled "grass" "leaves" and so on I think it was free on their site or something. It's not good to rely on for studies and things because it's hard to connect the brushes intentions with your own but it's definitely a tool. You could find a tutorial on how to make a brush preset, and make one that produces streaky vertical triangles that curve slightly and rotate randomly.
Here its just a shape used to mark the border between the colours.

Teres major goes from the bottom point of the scapula to insert at the front of the arm bone. There is also a teres minor, just above it, that runs to the back of the arm bone. Teres minor can be thought of as a part of infraspinatus, the larger muscle that covers most of the scapula below its spiny ridge and also inserts at the back of the arm bone.
You can't draw a muscular back from imagination by only studying anatomical diagrams. The great big trapezius actually has three sections, each with different directions of its fibers that indicate different functions, plus it covers supraspinatus and the rhomboids, which also create bumps in the back depending on the action of the shoulders. You have to learn all the form-creating muscles and their functions, and emphasize the forms of a particular muscle when it's in action. It's not as hard as it sounds but it takes some time. Off the top of my head, you'l need:
>Erector Spinae (the columnar muscles running down the back)
>Serratus (more to the side, but still affects the profile of the back)
>External Oblique (ditto)
>Supraspinatus
>Infraspinatus and Teres Minor
>Teres Major
>Rhomboids
>Latissimus Dorsi
>Deltoid

How do I know for sure if what I study one day or maybe even for a week will be properly retained in my mind in the days afterward? I'm mostly worried about mechanical consistency than consciousness. If that even makes sense IDK. I like to believe that they are two distinct things in art.

Like a state where I can perform what I just learned as if it were second nature, without much stress to consistently pump out the same thing over and over, just feeling natural. To really feel like I know for sure that I can perform what I wanted to learn without drastic fail/differentiation.
