If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
Completed: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit
New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
Read the sticky

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

The shadow isn't as hard cut as you're making it out to be. The shadows will be more diffuse if the casting object is future away. The hand is dar so the edges would be softer unless it's a spotlight shining on him. But you don't need to be 100% accurate on where you're placing the shadows, look at some pictures of cell shaded figures and get an idea of how they draw shadows and where.

draw spheres, boxes, cylinderes, carve, crack and break them and attach them to each other, draw rice bags stretching, twisting and being squished. once you get somewhat good at that, choose a basic figure drawing book and copy it entirely (hampton and morpho is what I used). draw those dolls on top of pictures and also draw them by eye measuring. try to have fun while doing all that by using your creativity and don't sob when it doesnt look amazing, just keep doing it and it will improve

Keys to Drawin. "Standing Figure". This is my worst work yet. I decided to try to rush it, because I usually take ~5+ hours to finish one exercise and I actually don't have that much time to draw, because I'm a full time salaryman. So this took about 2 hours top. It's really jarring to look at my work and reference side by side. I guess, the moral of the story is to not rush it.
But hey, the actual point of the exercise was to find the mid point and draw the figure filling the entire page, not too small, not too big and with accurate proportions, so I guess I somewhat succeeded. Well, I made her ass too big and her left side too low and her legs look really long, but it's not too bad for a turbobeg, right?
I'll just leave it as it is and try harder next exercise.

Some fixes.

>> No.6503363

I think I’m starting to go mad. Whenever I look at a reference or an object in real life, I can easily see the negative space, outline of the object, and the spatial relationship between each part of the object and its surroundings, but when it comes time to draw it, my lines almost always fail to accurately capture what I see. For example, if I try to draw my hand, I can see the shape and every line/detail but when I put my pencil to paper, I immediately make a line that’s about 60% accurate to what I’m seeing, then the drawing ends up being about 40% accurate because I’m making the wrong kind of curve, line, sttoke compared to what I’m seeing, and I don’t know how to fix this. It’s maddening, because I can exactly see the line I need to fix but I can’t seem to translate it to paper.

>don't really know how i'm supposed to do details
being lazy with details is kind of a blessing imo. with painting, it's easy to get distracted by details before getting the big things right, e.g. proportion, value, etc. you seem to have a good start with getting the big things right. your studies look like good starter block-ins.

getting details right is hard, but if you're going for a painterly style (as opposed to atomic-level accuracy) I think you just have to pick out important details with hard edges and emphasize contrast until you think it sells. for example, the thin purple lines in the onion wedge where the skin forms layers, and the striations and variable translucency of the inner flesh.

Both of them are lacking form, I think the pose is a really awkward angle to begin with because there's lots of distortion. You could exaggerate the size and position of her arm to try and foreshorten it more, and maybe soften areas like around her stomach since it's meant to be wrapping.
I don't think your line quality itself is that big of an issue, working in black and connecting all your lines just kind of highlights the areas that look off, but pushing your line weight more and making things closer appear darker and all that cant hurt. I agree that a much better pose would fix a lot of your problems, try and find ones that show most of the body from 3/4 views

use square brushes, dont use pressure from 0 to 100 instead 40 to 80% may give you way better control, add a pattern to the brush, drop the stabilizer, big gestures, etc.

I am reading keys to drawing. Look at this. The lines are messy, there are lots of restatements, there is barely any shading, the head lacks any features, the arm on the right is transparent, some lines don't even make sense, it looks like it can be drawn literally in 15 minutes. Yet, it still looks orders of magnitude better than anything I draw, even if I spend days on the drawing. How do I achieve this? What makes artists able to scribble for couple minutes and have a good looking result? How do I learn this power?

How can you deal with taking commissions when its not a first-come-first-served basis? Can I ask people to submit their requests and then I choose what seems fun? Should I just raise my prices significantly to generate less interest? I really have no idea what I'm doing.

thats only 12 circles, it wont do a dime. If you are interested this is what I'm doing, I'm seeing great results in my line quality both in fast and slow traces, on digital and trad.

Motor skills comes down to accuracy and speed, from research it shows that the acquisition of motor skill is almost independent of age the only thing that changes movement top speed on the movement, so you will never be too old to improve, but it takes daily sessions for 10 weeks to cement the pattern in your muscle memory (this is from some boxing studies).

So... I use this template to trace the first time use a stop watch to time how much it takes to trace 5 times each figure, then use that time race against in coming sessions. Every movement comes from the should, elbow and wrist never fingers. Use the same zoom % through out the session I use 37.3% zoom and brush at 4px without pressure sensitivity.

I started timing 22 min now after 10 days I'm at 10 min while retaining the same accuracy or better than the first time. You will feel a flare in under your scapula due to weak and dumb muscles, after a few sessions you will feel nothing.

It wasn't my intention lel, I was trying to do my frog drawing as fast as I could so I could finish it and turn it in to the thread instead of trying to draw it as accurately as possible and giving up halfway.

>i hate to be that guy but... wouldnt it be easier to use cylinders and spheres instead of boxes?
nta, not really if you use cylinders you will be losing 1 dimension of information (cylinder = height, radius and angle; you are replacing one of the dimensions for an angle roughly speaking) this one of the reasons many drawn faces feel flat they are thinking as a cylinder which makes 3d harder , on the other side with a box you have a well define x,y,z space you can carve into the box more easily.

tl;dr the brain process information more easily with boxes (cartesian system) than cylinders (polar system)

>You kinda want to post link to whole chapter
Thanks, well sorry, it's not really a comic, it's more of a 4koma, a 4-panel comic.
So what you see, IS the whole chapter.
