Yes he did the character designs for lots of animated things like the Gorillaz and Beatles as well as Motorcity depicted here. I’m more of a fan of his concept art and storyboards than his animation as well honestly.

It's funny to think that Western art - primarily Disney's Snow White - inspired Ultraboy, who then inspired the proto anime art style of the seventies, which was deconstructed by the rough and tumble style eighties anime is known for, which continued down the pipeline of cleaning up and refining until it became what we know today.

In a manner of speaking, Pregolden-age Western art created twenty first century Western art, in the most roundabout way possible.

The Western cartoons that inspired anime were actually inspired by Japanese Ukiyo-e, so Japan grandafathered anime as well.

What they did import from the West whole was realism and painting.

Can't argue with that but for me it's Don Rosa.
I grew up with Donald Duck and it was always a highlight of a week if that weeks issue had Don Rosa's story. Not just because the stories were great but also the very detailed artwork made my dyslexi ass focus on the pages like no other.
Don Rosa was probably my biggest influence why I got into drawing as a kid and even to this day Donald Duck type ducks are my comfort doodles.

this sort of layered, propulsive, polygonal look is an interesting alternative to a lot of the 'heavier' grimdark western comic art. In certain instances it allows him to do things which are more grounded or sculptural. It has this more animated, 'Paper Mario' sort of feeling.
