Why You Should Copy Anime:

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

I think it was a good effort and you can be happy about yourself.
Now I'd recommend moving onto another piece soon rather than staying focused on this one for too long. As you try different things I have no doubt you'll retroactively realize what could've been done better on this one.

For the next one, you could see about using a particular color palette from an illustration you like for example. I say this since here your colors (for light and shadows) are very basic.

You should put a bit more effort into studying clothing or taking photos of you wearing similar clothing to get an idea of how the fabric would behave.

assistants tools usually take cpu cycles to keep calculating stuff even on idle, this may cause lag on bigger projects, also the farther the vanishing points the more resource it may use...

Using a image template (raster level) there is no thinking involve, so less prone in lagging another benefit is that as the template is just another layer I can apply all the functions available to layers (blending modes, stacking order, masking, etc.) I can't imagine making something like a comic strip in which every panel may have a different vanishing points from each other with assistants tools.
Ended up using this templates, https://www.davidrevoy.com/article814/perspective-grids-for-comics-in-krita
but I think I will make an 8k version.

So this took me ~45 min. I wanted to take it further but figured I'd be wasting time. I'd like to redo it once trying to improve some stuff and then move on to another piece. Anything you notice that I could do better?
I'll try to not make such messy lines and make fewer but more confident strokes. I tend to focus on areas too small and not simplify much, so maybe I'll try to group stuff into longer lines. The negative space in the middle that I began with is actually fairly accurate when I overlap the images, but the dude's head, girl's head and her arm are not where they should be.

Also I've drawn no lines over the original, would that make for a more effective practice? I want to get more accurate and maybe get some muscle memory for nice lineart in

You will probably learn very little, since the objective of making copies of drawings that you like is not to learn but to improve your technical level aka draftsmanship.

Done, yes, it is chalk from csp. From a quick test on krita it can be replicated using "chalk details" brush and playing around with pattern strength. For some reason this brush is much easier to give a seamless continuation using multiple overlapping strokes while having a nice line weight, probably because of the coarseness of the pattern.

I think you should trace real people and anime characters, and get a feel for the curves, anatomy and how they are normally shaped.
You have some idea on what to do, but you may over exxagerate some stuff to a point thing it may look wrong, tracing should help bring it back to normal levels.
The word tracing may sound icky, but it helped for me and made me see what i got wrong despite figure drawing and study constantly, tracing just made it click.

If it helps, make some notes; i made the hp bone too sharp, my toes have too much definition, my shoulders are not as slender. Do stuff like that and you'll get afeel for how it's meant to be.

there should be simple since procreate is popular (even in Asia, there are tons of tutorials on yt). https://procreate.brushes.work/chalk-brush-free/ first result. Play with the settings.
I still doubt the chalk brush; it doesn't seem like the line quality I see in others works.
From even further on the archive, there is a mention on yaki's channel that focus on resolution vs pen size; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ooYQ_ob-bU
This makes more sense to me, basically:

pen size = max(resolution dimension)*0.003
E.g. for a 2500x3500 canvas
3500*0.003 = 10.5 pen size and with small variable size.

will experiment further after work

you are drawing symbols. in other words, you are putting flat stickers of eyes and mouth on a template when you're supposed to draw things with volume and perspective in mind
for example, in a front shot, the eyes and mouth don't curve upward like that, they curve toward the face because they protrude off of it. you drew it as if you were looking from above although still wrong
my personal advice whould be to look into the planes of the face and features so you know how to apply perspective to them. believe it or not, although the average anime face looks fairly simple it still relies on understanding the structure of a real face to make it look cute

I think the artist I'm trying to study is a bit out of my range. Who's a good artist to study from for beginners? I'm so dumb everytime I think "wow that person has a simple style" they're deceptively detailed.

Any good reccs for a solid artstyle to study from that's on the simpler side? Or should I stay with the complicated?

Depends, what are you seeking to improve? Like any problem, I would break it down into smaller parts, and then it becomes more manageable.
For example, right now I'm having trouble with
>>6467582 my usual line art isn't a good match so I broke it down to brush settings first and then mark making skills. After this, I go back to the whole subject until another problem appears rinse and repeat.
Post your reference and maybe someone will give you better advice.

relax, there's nothing to apologize for. Work in your line quality(confidence, line weight/contour line, big stroke from shoulder, etc) you need pen mileage, gesture drawings are great for this. Do this again but apply a grayscale filter over the image first, and focus on lines (weight-> how thick they are, and shape).

you are doing great, have fun!.

I decided to try drawing from memory and it's uhh... actually a lot better than I thought it would be. It's kinda fun to compare it to the original, seeing what I got wrong, what I completely forgot about, and what I actually paid enough attention to to remember. I feel like I'll be able to pay better attention to the image as a whole next time as well as filter out stuff that just wouldn't be helpful. Like you can see that I tried to draw the hair simplified but didn't remember it at all, and now that I look at how it actually was I could see myself simplifying it into 4-5 simple shapes if I were to do it again.

You could make her face longer if you wanted, but you'd need to pay attention to where you're placing the cheekbones (aka where the line bends). On your original the cheeks were placed very low, which made the face look like a sheet of paper.

In any case, Miku has been drawn by many different artists, so I'd recommend looking for ones who stylize her in a way you like and study their proportions.
Rella comes to mind for example as an artist who might fit what you were trying to go for:

Guys, I see many artists do this and I just don't understand why...

What's the point of painting your drawings all in gray shades first, if you'r just going to replace them with colors anyway?

Why not just start with the real colors first?!

>> No.6476430

Gray is easier and faster to paint with than colors, and gives you an idea how to proceed with shadows.

>> No.6476433

>>6476430
I see. But how do you know which color fits which shade of gray?

>> No.6476447

>>6476412

You need to be able to recognize "values" in a painting. This is the base of your painting, the building blocks, the sauce on the pizza. Colors are toppings, decoration, sprinkles of accent and emotion - but the base values need to be there.

Check out Airi Pan's Fool Proof Concept Art course. She explains it rather well in the first couple of videos, but it's better that you practice it 'cause it's kinda hard to wrap your head around.

If I had to summarize it, I'd say that you need to be able to identify large shapes in your painting and separate them into something comprehensible and appealing. One good practice exercise is to take a screenshot from a movie, turn it into grayscale, squint your eyes and try to identify the shapes using only three values (black, white and gray). Colors come after - shape language is more important. Some of the real pros forego the value construction altogether - but that's because they're pros and know it all by heart already, so they start with color straight away.

I see... I still don't quite get the exact point of it because I've done fine without it, but I'll do some "Grisaille" exercises then... Maybe then I'll get the point of it.

The way I understand the small animals thing is that those are simpler pictures, so you are less likely to get lost in details while trying to do the exercise. The ideas underneath should be the same, you're training your eyes.

Here are some example schizo lines (I wouldn't use these if I was trying to draw your ref, it's just for example). Can you see what shapes don't match? Can you think about how you would change them so they do match?

I think you did make some improvements in the upper body for sure, but neither you or the OP noticed a few things that's fucking you over:
The entire torso is leaning at an angle, and the right side of it fits into a straight line angle, whereas in your's it doesn't and flares out.
If you compare your's to the ref you'll see there's quite a bit of negative space in the ref compared to both OP and your drawing. This basically means the rotation of the hips is entirely wrong right now. The other thing is that the far leg on the floor should have a bit more indication that its rotated slightly towards us, whereas in OP it still looks like its from a flat side view.

Ok faggoot, walk us through your process. Is it all done in normal layers? What brush size did u use for the lineart?Did u apply the shadows and highlights last? How are your colors and layers arranged? Did you just fucking traced everything? Kek.

I just painted using multiply and color dodge light method in Krenz's way and then used normal layers to adjust the painting slightly.

What is the process for drawing and coloring long hair? I'm getting fucked over by this study, I already can't make the hair bundles smooth and can't make sense of the flow.
