6465666 No.6465666 [Reply] [Original]

This thread is dedicated to master studies, where you copy artwork you admire as a form of study. They are the quickest way to improve and learn about any fundamental you are having problems with. If you need to work on your hands, copy hands from other artists, and if you're having trouble with rendering, make careful studies of paintings with lighting you admire. Studies can be quick or long. You can even copy anatomy books like Bridgman, Morpho, and Hogarth. The type of studies you want to do depend on your personal goals and the types of problems you are grappling with.

Artists of all levels are welcome. Critiques and redlines are encouraged.

What's the actual purpose of Master Studies?
Isn't just real life reference always better?

>> No.6466755

>>6466732
I don't think you really understand what the term "master study" means judging by the crap you've been spamming anon.

A "master study" implies you're studying from an artist you consider well-rounded and of a higher, established skill level. You do so in order to break down and understand the process behind the picture, akin to reverse-engineering it. It has nothing to do with them being born centuries ago or having their works on a museum's wall. Even studying someone else's study can be considered a master study.
The medium and style said artist is using only matters to you. If you believe Miyazaki's drawings possess something you want to extract and instill into your own art, then he is a master to you and studying his work counts as a master study. Same goes for some famous Twitter artist you look up to.

Forcing an anti-Japanese culture narrative or pretending to objectify what should be valued as masterful or not in the end just tells more about you people's petty complexes more than anything else.

> In the Renaissance, students would first learn perspective, then copy their master's work, and only then, would they draw from life
I’ve been saying this since 2019!
I’m the one that made the “Tracing is a Tool” thread where I explain why you MUST copy from other artists before drawing from life or at least trace over the figure until you end up with a style you like so you can actually get results. But people on here tell begs to just “draw from life” which is one of the most confusing pieces of advice and most frustrating because they never actually tell you that the prerequisite to drawing anything from life is first seeing how another artist draws that exact thing.

>> No.6467342

>>6467257
It's difficult to understand this in the current teaching climate and the influence of the golden age illustration era, but master copies are definitely the original way drawing was taught. There are documents of Michelangelo's drawing exercises of students, where it's basically just his students copying Mikey's own sketches.

I think it would be helpful for you to pay attention to your thumbnail more. Make it a habit to zoom way out (and flip your canvas often); in fact, it might be useful to block in your shadows with a big brush zoomed out and zoom in / use a smaller brush as you refine. For instance, your bounce light would have jumped out at you had you checked your thumbnail.

The biggest issue here is your lay-in and edgework.i would suggest tracing the study and major shapes and gradually lower the opacity until you remove it altogether as you're just starting out. also, take a few minutes to look away and view it with fresh eyes so you can correct your errors as you work. also use multiple brushes to get the proper blending on your object.

the perspective seems a tad off. your face seems more straight on, whereas in the ref his face seems somewhat tilted down. in the photo, you can't see as much of his upper eyelids as you drew.

your values aren't as contrasty as in the photo ref, too; i.e. the value differences between the light side and the dark side aren't as pronounced as in the ref.

how long did you spend and what are your techniques for the initial drawing and blocking in? how long did you spend? what was your aim in practice -- any particular goals. or just to knock out a face for general practice?

it's cool ref, too. where'd you get it?

>I want to get better at painting. My skill in line art and painting arent equal and its time to fix it.
if your goal/assignment isn't to use a particular construction method for now, and you can just copy what you see, then I recommend mentally detaching it from your drawing habits. think more about shapes and edges instead of lines, especially during your block in phase; the whole picture as irregular, interlocking, straight-edged shapes. think about it in terms of light and shadow if the source allows. block ins are the most important thing to get right. mark tennant is an awesome painter who basically just does block ins.

I can give more info or critique if you want, but here's are some lines I drew over your (modified) ref to illustrate. the yellow is an envelope with too many edges, and the green is to sort of highlight what I would casually consider to be barriers between light and shadow.

dorian iten has some really good videos about it that I recommend. I find that over time, his advice is what sticks for me and has helped me the most. his advice helped me a lot with accuracy, identifying value relationships, and thinking about process.

Keep doing them! Copy whatever interests you.

you're symbol painting the colors. you made the tomatoes too warm but somehow got the reflection in the pitcher closer to the picture. the tablecloth saturations are off, perspective and proportions are off. shadow edges are completely off and nonsensical on the pitcher. slow down and map out everything first before you render.
