If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Take your pick. Ordered them in what i thought was probably least to most difficult so hopefully everyone can at least try something. Bonus points if you include all 4 things and double-double bonus points if you have the action represented in someway.

Also, what are some top picks for books or courses that focus on learning just raw form? Looking to get through some material but I haven't really got much value out of the few books i've started. They often felt like I was just learning the shapes of what the thing is "supposed to look like" or tracing the contours and details 1 to 1.

barque plates are an advanced exercise for replicating exactly what you see (oftentimes, unwittingly recommended to absolute beginners) which should take hours to complete though are not absolutely necessary if you do not wish to become an advanced copy-artist--since it had to do with observation, i opted to include it
is there a reason why it should be removed?

Most of the boxes are fundamentally failing to follow one of the most important tenants of lesson 1:

Be intentional and make quick, confident lines. Ghost, start at a point, shoot out, and /dedicate to the line you have created/. It can be tempting to make your stuff again, etc, but focus on quality. Once you finish your box, try going over the outermost edges to add lineweight to the silhouette. Finally, add /intentionally/ shaded sides. Stop scratching over the same line ten times!

Be deliberate, be confident.

I'll respond positively, or at least attempt to -- because I'll assume you responded out of frustration and I want to be empathetic of that.

You are competent enough to check your perspective with a ruler. And seem to own one, based off the fact that you've drawn lines to check your perspective. That skill can be honed through your own careful observation. Take time when you make a box to ask yourself what exactly is throwing it off, then check with the ruler to see if your guess was correct. This will help guide your intuition there.

What might /not/ be immediately obvious and something you can check is the mindset you put yourself in when you are putting pen to paper, and I can empathize with the scratchy drawings because I've consistently done that before.

You're doing this challenge not so that you can draw a bunch of boxes. You're doing it so you can improve your art, and improvement of your art will come from perspective growth (something you will ALREADY get out of the exercise) and general improvements of your headspace -- the decision to put intention to each mark.

Empathy over. improve your work in /all/ facets of its craft, or stay ignorant.

I ain't an expert or anything but im pretty sure the key at that age for getting good at something is just seeing to it that they continue to have fun with it and have positive reinforcement, like external reinforcement from you non-patronizingly complimenting her shit giraffes. That is at least until she's able to get that positive gratification from her own inner matrix. Really, enjoyment's the key for learning at any age but the great thing for kids that age is that they're too stupid to acknowledge the demoralizing reality outside of their own fun. So don't force her to sit through a 6 hour art theory lecture just yet and she'll probably continue to be motivated just by the joy of it. As well as as long as you continue to let her enjoy art in general(80% of the reason most of us are here is we liked and consumed a lot of comics, manga, anime, animated movies, etc)

If she sticks with it long enough then try to challenge her so she doesn't coast on "talent" but leaving that up to her own initiative is probably better for getting her to actual stick through and learn. So ya, get her some "how to draw anime" or similar low level children art books that she can choose to engage with or just enjoy the art of and maybe even one or so the basics 'big boy' art books so she can catch a glimpse at how high the ceiling really goes. Even if she does go "boring" and doesn't read it for 5 years.

Maybe others can give better suggestions but for a more "advanced" book, "Pen & Ink Drawing" by Alphonso Dunn, was one of the first i owned and i think it's visually pretty interesting and varied in subject so not completely boring to look through, as like say "Keys to Drawing" was for me, and the actual text itself touches broadly on a number of good beginner subjects. It's all line art though so idk if that's a good fit if she prefers like markers, colored pencils, etc. Bottom line, just don't force it, she's 6, kids like to draw and it probably won't last.

>What can I do to foster/help her learn properly?
when i look back to when i was younger, i sometimes got expensive stuff which i ended up not using because it was too expensive to replace. now that i buy stuff myself for things i do, i never buy the best thing, i buy the stuff i can easily replenish/replace. i don't buy a nice 15$ sketchbook. i buy minimalist sketchbooks for $2-3, copy paper and have 20 of the same pencils at my desk. not saying you should buy her that, but my argument is that a scarcity mindset will put her off to actually draw.

so, i bought a wooden mannequin and stepped away from drawing portraits to focus more on my forms and gestures and drawing bigger parts of the body. i've been wondering why my drawings came out better with a mechanical pencil and i think it's because it glides better and so my lines get looser. currently trying to transfer this feeling to normal pencils. also have been more focused on showing planes and less silhouettes.

my issue with guides that tell newbies to "Just draw!" is that most people new to drawing that are reading the guides are probably older and have the intention to improve their drawing skills. they're more conscious of mistakes which is really hard to get used to. i personally almost got filtered by being unable to make a straight line after hours of practice, like it seems so simple and i've made lines with a pencil all my life, why is it so difficult? i think starting with drawing simple, natural things like rocks, sticks, and dead trees are the best start since those naturally have imperfections so your own imperfect lines and shading will still result in something that looks like a rock or a stick. i think a lot of people naturally start with trying to draw things like human faces which are pretty complicated and any issues will be immediately apparent

I've been doing zero "guiding lines" like you see everyone do, like circles for the head and perspective lines that you erase later. I'm fine with this, but it seems like any beginner artist is supposed to do that. How hard are dip pens to work with? Looking for something to ink with. I've tried brush pens, felt tip, and india ink + brush. Brush pens were my favorite of the 3, the felt tip felt fuzzy and I didn't like that it was uniform thickness, and the brush meant I had to be full focus at all times if I wanted to consistent thin lines. Lost my brush pens and trying to decide between buying a new set or going with dip pens.

this has nothing to do with "intermediate artists" it has to do with intermediate skill in copying and DAB has nothing to do with copying or observational ability--at least the useful parts of it

also, i have found it is better for a beginner to learn how to copy before they learn perspective or how to draw a box in order to avoid frustration in the future, the way copying is downplayed for a typical artist is to his detriment as most artists copy in some way or another

here is the lesson plan i would typically recommend if you're an acttual absolute beginner
>line control and shapes (first lesson of DAB)
>observational ability (that infographic above)
>perspective (marshall vandruff and D'amelio)
>form (haven't found a good one yet)
>else

It took me about a year to learn how to dip pen, and even after a year I can only complete an ink drawing, but its like 10% of my competency with a micron. I’d say they are pretty hard to learn. Micron being the easiest. Ink and brush being the hardest. The consistency of the ink and the type of paper make a huge difference in what is achievable with dip pen.

Some general tips
- clean your nib between each dip
- try lots of different papers, cheap paper can tear and bleed so doing detailed work is hard. Water color paper can be too textured so doing detailed work is hard
- change your nib often especially if you arent using the zebra gold nibs or if you are about to use an old nib that you havent used in over a month.
- add water to your ink if its too thick, let your ink air out for a few days if it is too thin. Thick ink pools on the nib and it ‘whiffs’ and no lines are made. Thin ink bleeds on the paper.
- dirty nibs wont draw and the ink pools on the nib and wont run. Clean with soapy water and / or use a lighter to burn off the oils. Don’t touch the nib with your fingers, use pliers.
- if you are right handed work from left to right and top to bottom to avoid smearing
- use a shot glass or something for the ink to avoid contamination
- get a feel for the direction you can draw in. nibs dont like moving side to side or making up strokes like you can with a micron or brush. They only pull down, so commit to rotating the paper instead of shortcutting and pushing the nib.
- move fast, don’t linger or you will get line tremors and pooled ink

Dip pen takes quite a bit of finesse to get it right. It’s basically adding a 3rd dimension to your inking since you now have x, y and z (pressure) for line weight.

If I'm not an aspiring concept artist or trying to make a sketchbook should I still stick to the idea of one subject matter per week and have them getting gradually harder like rocks>roots>skulls>bugs etc?

Scribbled this from half reference for the muscles and half imagination for the pose, I need some crits on how I can fix the thing and what might be improved upon, since I know there's something off and can't point it out myself
It's supposed to be a female form fyi, just left out the obvious cues like hair as a challenge

In general I think you need to start from the beginning and learn your basic forms. For this particular piece I think if you changed the angles so its not just a vertical line down it would look more interesting

Just draw bro. Try to identify your mistakes by referencing other art and real life material but just fucking draw whatever it is that got you interested in drawing in the first place.

If you start out with stuff like cubes and grindy exercises you’ll quickly lose interest. However if you start drawing and build a habit of actually enjoying it, grindy stuff becomes a lot less daunting and almost enjoyable.

I think the torso looked too long. So I widened the whole picture, I lassoed the head to unwidened it and make it bigger, and I shuffled the features of the head and ear around a little. I do not know my back anatomy, hip area, and shoulder stuff, someone else have to chime in there.

I guess I wasn't curving the lower body or making the head-shoulder proportions small enough for the feminine appearance, feel free to tack on some more crits if y'all see anything off still

No it's not fucking "okay", you've separated people who want to see the same thing. You've made things more complicated. You fucked it up. And now you want to repaint it as "okay"?
Fuck you.
