is there a way to make a screentone brush in sai?
i've tried searching around and most of the solutions seem really ghetto

>> No.6444696

>>6444053
The closest you can get in SAI are brush textures, and yes, very ghetto.

If you want a more complete screentone system, CSP would be the top choice.

You could paint grayscale layers in SAI, and then export a PSD to use in CSP and work out converting them to screentone layers there in a later step.

I know that feel, OP.
I wish I could at least use custom brushes sometimes to add some variety, but every copy of SAI I've tried through the years, from protable to cracked, doesn't seem compatible with it.

I might just buy this lil feller one day, the problem is I don't know if it's going to work either.

Only program I’ll ever use. Spent $40 on it 13 years ago and the dev helped me transfer the license to sai2 just recently. I’d suck him off frPG

is it better than csp? I think brush choices alone would turn me off

I only go back for the ruler because I learned perspective the trad way and it's the only program that has a ruler that's just a fucking rectangle you can rotate
otherwise I use csp

Do you not like CSPs perspective guides? I'm pretty new to the program, but they seem to work well enough.

i have to force myself to use it its the only drawing program that doesnt turn my laptop into a stove its but the brushes are so limited i dont think i can do realistic painterly art on it im so used to photoshops brushes that it has hindered me from using other software.

It depends on what you want out of a drawing program. Do you see yourself animating or
working on multi-page long-form comics? Do you use a lot of stamp brushes or patterns in your work? lots of filters? If the answer is yes then CSP is probably what you want. SAI is more about Illustrations and focuses on a clean user interface and painting experience. I'll say that when it comes to the the tools that artists who like the brushes REALLY like the brushes so it's worth checking out at least once.

Pic related was painted in Sai, so it is certainly possible to achieve some level of painterly realism with it.

I never understood the big hype on custom brushes and brush settings.
There is so much you can do with so little.

I do wish, however, that it had a dark theme to save my eyes.

SAI 2. But I remembering trying in different versions with no success. Some required changing the config files, some just required a bitmap placed on the brush folder, some didn't have either available.

This isn't even an advanced program but it just works. I think the reason is that it only works in Windows so it's super fast. Every other program is made to work with linux so they always use a heavy toolkit like QT that slows down everything.
Try drawing in SAI and in CSP without stabilizer. CSP is heavy so the brush starts lagging behind. SAI is light so it instantly draws the strokes to your cursor.

i just need a straight line i can easily rotate at will, a straight line and my vanishing points on said line.

Are you speaking of Krita and GIMP? CSP, PS and FireAlpaca are Windows only. Those pieces of software run slower on older software because they're naturally just that heavy, Linux has nothing to do with that.

The dev should do random flash sales of Paint Tool Sai like clip studio paint does. If he sold for just $10 or $20 sometimes he could get a large demographic of poorfags and cheapskates who would just pirate it

What features are still non existing in SAI2 over CSP in compariaon, for starters the smudge tool is NOT like the liquify tool you'll find in both CSP and photoshoppo

>> No.6458297

>>6457315
There is still nothing else that beats the speed of Paint tool Sai since it came out. It runs fast on the slowest potato PCs. You can paint on 10k resolution with a 1000px brush and it still won't lag.

And a lot of people like Sai just because it's UI is very simple and straight forward. Less bloat is a feature for some artists. But I think a lot of sai artists just export their work to CSP or PS for final touchups
