If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I've been trying to get down the basic shape of a glass jar for half an hour now and it still looks like ass... When I look at the jar (the object, not the drawing), it looks like the the top ellipse is closer to a circle than the bottom one, but I can't figure out why. I know it's supposed to be the other way around, but I'm somehow getting cockblocked by my perception.

I'm trying to understand 2 point perspective and looking for feedback. What I gathered so far is the following:
1)the basic vanishing points define the distortion of right angles
2)the station point is the position of the observer in relation to the observed image
3)the vanishing points create a right angle at the station point
4)moving the observer closer to the image moves up the horizon line to preserve the right angle created by the vanishing points
5)rotating an object moves the vanishing points along the horizon line but preserves the right angle of the vanishing points at the station point
Is that correct? I haven't been able to find a single description like this so I pieced it together from various tutorials.

>> No.6440306

>>6440302
And one more question, does adjusting the angle of the vanishing points at the station point create a framework for distorting shapes that have the same angle as the angle at the station point?
If that's the case, I think I'm finally starting to get it.

Any Critique is appreciated.
I've been following references for clothing more but I'm still not pleased with how to draw the folds of clothes or the wrinkles, I've also attempted colouring the jacket with pencil but it just looks very poor. I'd like to get the proportions better too because I start with the head and that tends to result in the body being smaller than it should be. I got very lazy near the legs but I'd rather start a new one from scratch than continue with it I'm probably missing something pretty obvious.

as far as the proportions go, you want to first do light gesture/sketch of the whole thing, then double check the proportions. Only after all that you start drawing for real. And you dont need to worry about the sketch being visible since you draw it lightly with harder pencil

general critique. pose is too stiff, look for better references or get a 3d model that you can pose. the upper head is a bit small. the eyes are too big, they could work but with a better expression, that mouth comunicates nothing, not even contempt. the breasts are too compressed and too far up. there are no discernible fingers. the sweater neck is too broad, and if it's as broad as the neck, then the neck is to broad. the waist line suggest that it's a girl, but the breast size and position and neck and hip width suggest otherwise.
as far as clothing folds, in the pants are arched up, like if you are looking that character from below, but the black straps don't have the same arch, which makes it look inconsistent.

eh while i highly recommend still lifes, i don't think its that necessary and is a bit at odds with how people study at home vs a studio.

still life is most beneficial when you have a solid area to plop down on and just draw something for a few hours getting extremely autistic with angles and perfect copying. which helps if you're in a class or studio with a bunch of other people.
if you're just at home by yourself, its hard to plop down and get autistic about getting just the right angles on these bananas.

and while still life is great at improving your visual capabilities, it doesnt really help with the theory by itself unless you have someone to explain things to you.

imo its very much a class type thing. its extremely useful but only in the proper setting.

Critiques welcome. This is the first time I've tried something like this where I use a reference just for the pose and all the other details come from a character reference sheet. I treated it kind of like a test run to just go through the whole process and then check what I need to improve. I already know I need to work more on form and shading as big subjects and then focus more on anatomy and clothes after that. Tips on the background? I kind of drew the triangles randomly other than the main one. I also wanted the character to be the focus, so I made it darker than her, but something still seems off to me. I also tried replacing the dark blue with her hair color, but she didn't stand out as much.

Ignore the facial features because you're going for something stylistically different than how I draw which is fine. The wrinkles of clothing are directly tied to how the forms underneath are twisting/positioned, so if you're character is lifting their arms above their head and rotating their shoulders, the drapery follows that. Dynamic Wrinkles by Burne Hogarth is a good book for drapery study.

But the most important thing is you should get a book called Fun with a Pencil by Andrew Loomis and burn through that over and over and over. You are stuck in symbol drawing mode where a lot of the elements of your drawings act more like stickers stuck to a 2d surface rather than actually following 3d forms in space. That book helped me a lot and I still go through it every now and then for refreshers. The colors of your art is actually fine, but I would put color theory at the end of the list of what you should be studying.

Colors are fine, for shadows what I do is fill the entire character with the shadow color, then erase areas for light, paint in the shadows back, and just go back and forth. One secret, is that half of the shadows I do are light direction accurate and the other half are just bullshit that looks good. ""Shadow Shapes"" that are pleasing to the eye I find more important than accuracy. If I have an area completely covered in shadow and there is one single thing sticking out that would catch the light creating a dot of light in a giant area of shadow and it doesn't compositionally look good, I will fuck light accuracy and just keep it in shadow. That's pretty much what I did with half of the block in here. For the "lighting" part, just grab a saturated hue with a high value, and slowly airbrush over the areas that you erased the shadows from on a hard light (or whatever) layer. Some of the airbrush will "bleed" over into the shadow, creating a glowing effect, which I like.

Here is a rough block in to help you brainstorm something.

Room generally feels empty and lacking in detail but I'll leave it at this since I don't know what else to put without looking at a bunch of references. Anyway, a question. I put in a few solid colours first ( dark grey for the machines, wires, pipes etc then light blue for the tank then dark pinkish for the fetus )

I was wondering if this is inefficient practice and that I should just go ahead and colour in what I ultimately had in mind like the machine being a much lighter grey? I hope I'm not overthinking this. Rough sketch on the right as a reference.

I think the machine being lighter gray would be a bad choice tho, it needs to contrast from the background. I also think since it seems like the fetus is the centerpiece of the image, the composition is a little weird.

>im not totally clear on what youre asking, and most others probably arent either, thats why youre not really getting responses.

Nah it's fine if I don't get any replies. I wanted to post regardless so I can pressure myself to not giving up as I have no idea how to go about this ( Which is probably why I don't know what question to ask exactly. I'll be more careful next time. ) so I'll have to just redraw this room several times from different angles later.

Right now I'm just determined to finish *A* piece no matter how terrible it looks because all 20-30 of my drawings so far has been half-assed sketches where I just give up a 1/10th of the way through.

>cheap screenless tablet
same, i got a screenless tablet 2 days ago that i'm slowly getting used to although i started out on pen and paper. i definitely recommend starting out with the humble pen(cil) and paper if you're brand new. you've probably written on a physical piece of paper far more than you've drawn on a virtual one so there's no learning curve to producing a literal curve. drawing well is extremely hard so you want to start out easy to give yourself time to adjust mechanically to producing shapes, lines, circles, boxes, and the like and adding in more of a burden at the beginning will just needlessly stress you out. that being said, i'm only 2 months into drawing so i'm not really one to be giving that much advice

Hello beg, today i am officially done with Nicolaides. Despite the extreme grind of seemingly pointless exercises involving doodles most of the time i rate the book as thumbs up. All said and done however i wouldn't recommend it to common BEGs at all. The book focuses mostly on the gesture and ignores all and any techniques. This book can definitely teach you how to speed up, line confidence, what it means when your picture is stiff or soulless and so on but none of this is relevant for prebegs nor begs. Its sort of book for higher begs. I am glad its over.

if you cannot find hour or two for drawing every day i am afraid you will NGMI. Btw you dont have to practice at home, there are anons who draw on the go or at work. All you need is pencil and small sketchbook. Draw from reference simply what you see around

The eyes are different sizes and afaics his right ear is missing and his left ear is comically high on the head. You used very poor quality markers.

Great work for drawing and posting anon, keep it up!

Dumb question here.
Recently I got drunk and thought it would be a nice hobby to learn watercolour (can't even draw) so I brought some shitty art supplies online and when it arrived, I give it a chance and enjoyed it.
Even more recently, I brought one of those 005 pens because I always like architectural sketches, and discovered that line & wash is a thing. But holy shit those pens come with just a few drops of ink, and it can get expensive fast...
Besides refilling those pens, is there a cost-effective fountain pen for Indian ink that produces a really thin line (like my micron 005)? Do they last? Do they clog?
Pic related my last "paintings".

Plenty of chink and Indian inks you can buy that'll last a long time, you'll only need to fill up a pen with two or three small drops too. Another fun thing to try out is brush pens, very easy to refill but definitely takes a bit of time to get used to

I was looking at Talens Indian Ink (very few brands I learned in this short time), but I am afraid of just clogging the pen because indian ink has a bounding agent like watercolour paint.
I was looking for something waterproof, because, well, line AND WASH.

How long do those Micron pens last before they clog?

Other than the perspective, critique?

I would like a bit more of information for the perspective as well, like I understand the points but like out of place objects that don't go to the vanishing point.

Also, you guys know how to self discipline? Like I know what I got to do to improve my art but I can't get myself to do it. Maybe you artfags could give some tips for that as well.

it feels like with pen and paper its so easy to have good lines, every pencil you pick up is gonna be alright to draw with. But on digital you have to spend so much time finding a good brush and making a good pressure curve just so things don't look like a coloring book. Its not even related to anatomy, my lines are just wobbly and have tails and the thickness is all over the place

One that stood out to me right away is their faces, they look flat and symbol-ish, especially the guy's.
As for perspective tips, it doesn't look half bad, but I'd recommend first blocking out the scene. Placing cubes on a plane and having them look decent in a simple perspective isn't hard to learn, then you just draw the drums and whatever within them.

all the facial features look just slightly misplaced and the smile on the middle left guy combined with his eyes looks a bit creepy id say study construction and expressions

3 Month begnon here, I struggle immensely with forming the hair
How can I make my hair not look so off?
I'm using Saito Naoki's technique of placing the color first to build up the shape, but even doing so I can't
get something that looks like what I want. I'm using many references of ichinose asuna, but I can't get it down

Oh shit, I just realized what it was, after looking at the Bridgeman anatomy book I have.

The cheekbones were messing me up. I was connecting the chin all the way to the ear without much consideration about the front part of the face. Im supposed to make the front of the face have the chin connect to the cheekbone (they make a triangle shape) and then connect the chin to the ear to make it not so flat.

Not sure if I explained it right but it clicked, thanks bro. I'll definitely go practice some expressions now.

no problem, i love helping people to improve their art

its because you arent drawing individual strands of hair
add more details. also, i hope you are only using this reference pic for hair practice, because the hands and perspective on it are really bad

Hair and face practice, mainly the hair as my works become basically ruined right now when I get to doing hair

thanks a lot for showing that anon, The strands you've drawn completely changes how it looks

I cant move from drawing shapes to drawing people. I've decided I will alter reality to turn this dimension into cubes and spheres.

Going to repost this from the /salt/ thread

Pic related I have a question if anyone would be so kind
Since I've started drawing I've been using my own H-game char as my reference, she has closer to 'super model' proportions, and currently I've got 'OK' at drawing her in most poses with only slight angling off etc,
Am I actively harming my learning by using her as my reference?

I tried using regular people as my reference earlier on, but quickly started getting revolted by staring at 3D, regardless how autistic that sounds.

If its really actively hurting my drawing I could look around for a set I'm not repulsed by, then buy that and try, but so far I've done many on her and would prefer to if its not stunting my growth

>>6444654
it's fine to use her.you nowhere near where it does matter. but use preset poses, they are less broken. I don't like that you focus on contour, but this is just me

any good resources to learn pixel art?

anatomy on this model is good but the poses are stiff.

Both characters look like chris from family guy and the kick drum has melted. Try to focus for 5 seconds when you draw a circle or oval so it comes out even

thanks anons I'll continue using her then, I'm a beginner of beginner beg (hadn't touched a pencil since a kid then just bought a tablet) and really I only see contours at the moment. The poses are poses from pose packs I got I'll try and find more dynamic ones to use in the future

Does anyone know a good way to learn construction?

I want to finally be able to start studying anatomy

I'm getting tired of just copying stuff, I've been at if for an entire month straight

>filtered by the cube
Fellow /beg/s I'm flailing. I've drawn about a hundred of these and I can just barely "see" the cuboid rotating along the initial "Y," but I'm struggling to put it into paper. So far have really only done some cartoony stuff with Loomis, read relevant sections in Framed Perspective, and gotten this far in Drawabox. Does it get better naturally as I'm going along, or should I home in on something specific?

To date I have evidence in my own mind of skills developed since I previously couldn't "see" what I can "see" now (the cuboid in perspective along with rough plotted points in imagined 3-point perspective) so there might be an argument for just literally drawing 250 (-100) boxes, but wondered if anyone else struggled to make the cube rotate freely.

hi guys, was an sfw 2d artist a few years ago for like 2 years then gave it all up to focus on 3d art, but now im finally bored with that so im beginning learning nsfw art, spent the last 3 or 4 days just 24/7 at my tablet recreating ref pics
anyway this is my most recent result following sketched anatomy recreations. i know this isn't great but i need to know, is it like EMBARASSINGLY bad? I think it is at least acceptable, i mean the face kinda sucks but the pose and shading seems alright to me (no idea how i would effectively draw pubes so i just used a brush for that, not sure how i feel abt it)
some of the works in this thread for being 'beginner to intermediate' blow me away so that's not a great sign for me
